This'term'we'are'focusing'on'a'school'wide'theme'enAtled'‘What$is$Culture?’'Across'the'school'we'are'going'to'talk'about'the'definiAon'of'culture'and'how'we'relate'to'it.'We'are'

going'to'explore'the'cultures'of'people'in'our'school'and'around'the'world.'Later'in'the'

term'we'are'going'to'share'with'you'our'understanding'of'culture'and'present'this'in'a'

number'of'ways.

The'word'culture'can'mean'so'many'different'things'as'we'have'already'started'to'

discover.'What'does'the'word'culture'mean'to'you?

In'the'junior'syndicate'the'focus'will'be'on'stories'–'fairy'tales,'myths'and'legends,'family'

stories'and'how'these'relate'to'our'culture'and'who'we'are'in'the'world.

In'the'middle'syndicate'we'are'exploring'the'idea'of'culture'and'different'ways'that'we'are'

influenced'by'our'culture'and'the'different'ways'we'express'our'culture.'Each'class'will'be'

doing'an'in'depth'inquiry'into'a'parAcular'culture.'Children'will'spend'Ame'thinking'about'

their'own'culture.

In'the'senior'syndicate'we'are'defining'what'culture'is,'looking'at'various'cultures'within'

the'class'and'then'moving'into'an'inquiry'process'where'students'invesAgate'a'culture'of'

their'choice.

We'would'love'you'to'be'sharing'with'us'about'your'ideas'of'what'culture'means'to'you'

and'what'this'looks'like'for'you'in'your'day'to'day'life.'Talk'with'your'child’s'teacher'about'

how'you'might'share'some'of'your'culture'with'the'class.

towers.'Some'of'our'talented'musicians'performed'for'us.'Our'group'of'four'guitarists'

accompanied'the'school'in'the'singing'of'two'waiata.

The'Mt'Cook'Flames,'the'senior'netball'team,'will'again'be'coached'by'Kim'McKean'

(Nanaia’s'mum).'Maxine'Iraia'(Jahnaya'and'Capri’s'mum)'will'manage'the'team.

The'Mt'Cook'Year'5’s'will'be'coached'by'Jo'Hendy'(Amalie’s'mum)'and'managed'by'

Maxine'Iraia.'

We'will'have'four'basketball'teams'this'year.'Two'Year'7'and'8'teams'and'two'Year'5'and'6'

teams.'We'are'just'finalising'details'of'this.'Thank'you'to'those'of'you'who'have'already'

volunteered'to'help'with'coaching'or'managing.'

This$year$is$the$Board$of$Trustee$ElecQons.$These$are$held$every$3$years.$At$Mt$Cook$School$our$Boards$of$ Trustees$over$ the$years$has$worked$hard$to$ensure$that$every$child$at$Mt$Cook$School$receives$a$rich$quality$educaQon$in$all$areas$of$the$NZ$Curriculum$ and$that$the$focus$for$what$we$do$and$the$decisions$we$make$are$solidly$based$on$the$needs$of$our$children$at$our$school.$

As$ we$ all$ know$ Mt$ Cook$ School$ is$ a$ diverse$ community$ in$many$ways.$One$strong$ aspect$of$ our$ diversity$ lies$ in$ the$ fact$ that$we$ have$ over$ 24$ different$cultures$at$Mt$Cook$School.$Our$current$board$believe$that$it$is$vitally$important$for$our$school$ to$have$a$board$that$conQnues$to$reflect$and$represent$this$rich$diversity$and$that$also$reflects$the$values$of$Mt$Cook$School.$This$way$we$can$ensure$ that$ the$wide$ ranging$ needs$ of$ all$ our$ children$and$ their$ families$ are$being$met.$

This$wide$ community$representaQon$combined$with$the$ commitment,$energy,$skills,$ experience,$ talents,$ of$ the$ individuals$ on$ the$ board$ is$what$ we$ would$again$like$to$achieve$for$our$school.$
