Overthepastseveraldecades,technologyhasbecomeanintegralpartofourlives,revolutionizinghowwecommunicate,learn,andinteract.Ithasdramaticallyincreasedaccesstoinformationandhasintroducednewtoolsforbothworkandplay.Researcherscontinuetoinvestigatethewaysthatvarioustechnologiesshapethewaywethinkbyimpactinghumanattention,memory,anddecision-making.

Similarly,technology’simpactonthefieldofpsychologyhasbeenundeniableandcomplex.Telehealthhasexpandedaccesstomentalhealthservices,novelmethodsofneuroimaginghaveallowedusto

betterunderstandthehumanbrain,andnewmediahavebeenappliedtosolveage-oldclinicalproblems.Forstudentsofpsychology,emergingtechnologiesarebeingusedtodigitizecoursework,research,andconnectionwithmentorsandcollaborators.Earlycareerpsychologistsareleveragingtechnologytodeveloptheirprofessionalidentitiesviadigitalbrandingandtomaintainelectronicrecordsoftheirclinicalwork.However,whiletechnologyhasadvancedthefieldinmanyways,ithasalsoengenderednewchallengesbyforcingustofacenewethicalquestions,complicationsinresearchdesign,andpotentialdisparitiesinaccess.

Thisexpertpanelwilldiscusstheexcitingandcontroversialeffectsoftechnologyonthefieldofpsychology.Attendeeswillbeencouragedtoconsiderthewaysinwhichtechnologymayimpacttheirprofessionallivesacrossthecareerspan.Inaddition,thediscussionwillexplorethepotentialchallengesthattechnologybringstothefieldandhowtheaudiencemayactivelyshapetheirowninteractionswithtechnologyinlightoftheseinfluences.

CollaborativeProgramCo-HostedwiththeStudentCommitteeofDivision56(MediaPsychology):TheInnovativeandControversialImpactofTechnologyontheFieldofPsychology

Thepredoctoralclinicalinternshipistypicallythecapstoneexperienceforgraduatetraininginprofessionalpsychology.Withhundredsofdiverseinternshipsavailableinlocationsacrossthecountry,identifyingpositionsthatarelikelytobeagoodfitforanapplicant’sgoalscanbedaunting.Inaddition,theinternship applicationprocessitselfisoftentimeconsumingandcostly.Giventhecompetitivenatureofselectingapplicantsandthelargeimbalanceinthenumberofpositionsavailable,itiscriticalforgraduatestudentstodemystifytheprocessandgainconfidenceininternshippreparation,selection,application,interviewing,andmatching.

Inthissymposium,anexpertpanelofpresenterswillofferattendeesaninsider’sviewoftheinternshipapplicationprocessandprovidestrategiesforhowtofindandsuccessfullyapplytointernshipsthatfitwellwithanapplicant’straining,interests,goals,anddesiredclinicalexperiences.Specifically,thispanelwilldiscusstopicssuchashowtochoosetherightinternshipsetting(e.g.,school,medical,VAhospital,pediatric),importantfactorstoconsiderwhensearchingforinternships(e.g.,location,postdoctoralopportunities,etc.),andtipsforpreparingacompetitiveapplication.

Thepostdoctoralfellowshipyearisanimportantyearafteragraduatestudenthasmadethetransitionfromstudenttoearlycareerprofessional.Itisthesecondyearofsupervisedtrainingthatcountstowardstheapplicant’sabilitytoapplyforlicensure.Unlikethepre-doctoralinternshipprocess,thereisnotmuchofanemphasisplacedonamatchprocess,butratherindividualsbeingabletoapplytomultiplepositionsandeventuallyselectingtheonethatbestfitsthecandidate’slong-termcareergoals.Althoughnotasdauntingastheinternshipmatch

processitisstillaveryimportantstepontheroadtolicensuresoitiscriticalforpre-doctoralinternstohaveaspacetoobtainanswerstotheirquestionsabouttheprocess.Additionally,whilethecandidateisontheirpostdoctoralyeartheybegintoapplyforlicensure,whichcanbeaveryconfusingprocess.Inthissymposium,anexpertpanelofpresenterswillofferattendeesaninsider’sviewofboththepostdoctoralapplicationlicensureprocessesandprovidestrategiesforhowtofindandsuccessfullyapplytofellowshipsthatfitwellwithanapplicant’s

training,interests,goals,anddesiredclinicalexperiences.Specifically,thispanelwilldiscusstopicsashowtochoosetherightpostdocsetting(e.g.,school,medical,VAhospital,pediatric),importantfactorstoconsiderwhensearchingforinternships(e.g.,location,careeropportunities,etc.),andtipsforpreparingacompetitiveapplication.Followedbyabriefdiscussiononthelicensureprocess(e.g.applicationsandtheEPPP).Audienceparticipationwillbeencouragedinthissymposium.Abriefpresentationwillbefollowedbydiscussionandquestionsfromco-chairs.

AsavotingmemberofSection10anditsrepresentative,IhavehadagreatpleasureofbeingapartoftheSocietyofClinicalPsychology(SCP;Division12)ExecutiveCommitteeoverthepast3years.Everyyear,theExecutiveCommitteemeetsforaweekend-longmid-wintermeetingtodiscusscurrentandpastissues,aswellasfutureinitiativesfortheSocietyfortheupcomingyear.Thisyear’smid-wintermeetingoccurredearlyinFebruaryinOrlando,FLandIhavehadtheopportunitytoattenditinpersononbehalfofSection10.ItisatraditionintheSCPthatthePresident(electedeveryyear)proposesnewdirectionsandoverallinitiativesfortheiryearofpresidency.Thisyear,SCP’sPresident,Dr.BradKarlin,

announcedhisprimaryinitiativeistoincreasethenumbersofstudentandprofessionalmembersstillearlyintheircareer.Theseareexcellentnews,ofcourse,forSection10sinceitisourmissiontopromotegraduatestudentandearlycareerprofessionals(ECPs)development.Assuch,afterseveralhoursofbrainstorminganddiscussionatthemid-wintermeeting,severalinitiativeswereproposed,including1. Expandingthementorship

programtoincludemid-careerprofessionalsmentoringECPs;

2. ProvidingmoreopportunitiesforgraduatestudentsandECPstobeinvolvedintheSCPandSection10via

a. ContributionstoPsycCritiques;

b. SCPwebsitedevelopment;

c. Otherpublicationopportunities;

3. DevelopmentofaSCPconferencethatwouldoffermoreprogrammingandnetworkingopportunitiesforgraduatestudentsandECPsoutsideoftheAPAConvention.

Overall,thiswasalongbutveryproductiveweekendspentwithmanyleadersinthefieldofclinicalpsychologydiscussingthefutureoftheSocietyandtheissuesthattheclinicalpsychologycurrentlyfacesasafield.Section10willcontinuetocollaboratewiththeSCPontheinitiativesdescribedabove,aswellascontinuetocontributenewprojectsdeveloped“in-house!
