6th May 2016 - Issue 29
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to our fourth letter of the Summer
term.
I would like to start by highlighting the
amazing events that took place in our
West Hall yesterday. An organisation
called Humanutopia came into school to
do some work with our Year 9 students. I
was lucky enough to witness the events
unfolding for about half an hour. I need to
say that it was a hugely positive
experience seeing our Year 9 students
perform in the manner they did, displaying
high levels of maturity, commitment,
honesty and a willingness to speak
candidly about sensitive issues. Large
numbers of colleagues also attended the
event at various times of the day and it is
fair to say that the impact of such a great
day has already been felt across the
school. We are keen to carry on working
with Humanutopia in the future and
feedback from students this morning has
been universally positive. Well done to
Mrs Bushell for her organisation of this
fantastic experience for all of our students.
Our English iGCSE exam on Tuesday
morning went very well and we now look
forward to some good results in the
summer in that particular subject. Year 10
trial exams have also been taking place
this week in our East Hall and our exam
invigilation team have been highly
impressed with the attitude and self-
discipline shown by that particular year
group. I have been present at the start of
several of the exams and it is clear that
those students have certainly got the bit
between their teeth in terms of a
professional and serious approach to
exams. Well done to you all.
For Year 11, our revision programme in the
evenings and at weekends is in full swing
and I would look for the support of parents
and carers in encouraging our students to
attend these sessions. They are vital
opportunities to reinforce learning and
practice exam technique. I also need to
acknowledge the commitment of all our
colleagues who put on these extra
sessions, either at the end of the day or on
a Saturday morning – it is much
appreciated.
Have a good weekend.

Mathematics Questionnaire
One of our Maths teachers who is studying for a Master's Degree at Southampton University is planning to do some research into how mind-sets may, or may not, affect progress in mathematics. The research involves a simple questionnaire in which the students will be asked to respond to twenty statements, by ticking boxes by each statement, that indicate whether they 'Strongly agree', 'Agree', 'Disagree' or 'Strongly disagree'. The students' names will not be required, just the maths set that they are in. The students who have been invited to take part will be bringing home an information sheet which will allow you to 'Opt-out' if you do not wish your child to participate in the study. It will be assumed that if the form to 'Opt-out' has not been returned within a week, that your child has your consent to take part.
If you have further questions please contact Mrs. S Burton at [email protected]
The outcome of the research will help us to plan better to meet the needs of our students in their maths lessons. Thank you in anticipation for your co-operation.
