What a great couple of months we have enjoyed at Noarlunga, weather has been great and flying aplenty.
Military/Civil Scale day at the end of 2017 was a great success. Apart from great weather, the most pleasing aspect was the fantastic support we enjoyed from members of other clubs who made the trip. We were graced by members from South Hummocks, Barossa, Constellation, AMA Monarto, Skyhawks and SARCH. Most of the awards for the day were also won by these members who showcased a great variety of aircraft. There are some great pics on the club web site and flikr, well worth a look.
1 . Military Masters – Greg Hupeden, Barossa Club, P51 Mustang.2 . Pilots Choice – Andrew Willson, Skyhawks Club, Fokker DR1 (Red Barron).3 . Best Civil Scale – Trevor Gale, AMA Club, Show Cat4 . MASA Encouragement – Eddie Taylor, Barossa Club, P47 Jug.Our Sponsors Super Cheap Hobbies, Model Flight, O’Reilly Products Model Engines, Ace Hobbies, Southern
Model Suppliers, RC Hobby Zone & MASA all assisted with a very successful raffle and the Ladies and Gentlemen that all worked the canteen, bbq and chippery did a great job to keep a good crowd fed for the day.
The festive season saw several functions. A Christmas dinner at Christies Beach/Pt Noarlunga RSL where our Vice President Jason Tank is President and a New Year’s Eve bbq was held at the club with some good night flying. Mal Bartlett was
notable when hit the skies right on the tick of midnight (with a quiet electric)
We have also seen a great run of Silver Wings earned in this short period. 4 members earned their wings, our youngest being 12 year old Zac Bowyer and eldest Tony Roberts at 72, our other mid age recipients are Adam Burge & Kane Charlish who both achieved their proficiency in very short time. Well done to you all. Zac did particularly well and received
strong support from his dad Scott who had to make special training times with Trevor Tomsett & Peter Readett due to work commitments. Zac also received $50 from the flight development fund which was a sizable donation from a charitable member to be given to Junior Members who earn their wings.

Electric Day 14 January 2018 ....Don Howie and Larry Scott.History.
We have to thank Graupner, in Germany, and Fred Militky, their designer for introducing Radio Control electric flight with rechargeable batteries during the 1970’s. The first kit was the “Hi Fly”, which was slightly
less than 2 metre span, which Doon flew as an R/C glider, which had two electric motors with folding propellers fitted to the rear of the wings. Don recalls Roy Calman who first built this model and flew it at Constellation’s display days.
The next model from Graupner was the “Mosquito” glider that had a wingspan of over 2 metres with a geared 550 motor and large folding propeller at the front. This was another model flown by Don at Constellation
and one built by the late John Bates. Interestingly, the 540 size motors were used in cars to operate the windows of four door cars and the 550 for two door car windows. The smaller size motors being used to operate external mirrors.
These brushed motors were reliable and long lasting. The Boucher brothers introduced electric flight into the USA, in the 1980’s and it soon became popular. Sanyo, in Japan, developed the fast charging SCR NiCad’s and Don is still
using his last SCRC, 1700 NiCad’s (7 cells) in a “Spirit” glider that was converted to electric, with a Master Airscrew 550 motor, 3 to 1 gearbox 12 x 6 folding prop and a JR 50 amp speed controller.
In the 21st Century, Brushless motors and lightweight LiPo batteries have changed electric flight, with a proliferation of models available. Don started the Electric day at Connie during the 1990’s and the local expert at that time was Mal Pring.
Electric Day 2018.Most ready to fly models are now electric powered, usually, but not
always made from moulded foam. Quality and looks have steadily improved and the E/Flight PT 17, Stearman, at 1.1 metre wingspan, flown by Dale Packham, is a great looking and flying model. To get in the air all one as to do is add a receiver and 2200 m/amp, 3S battery.
Stan Gurr had a Hobby King “Dragon Fly” that has a fibreglass fuselage and built up wings. Stan fitted an E/Flight 480 motor and a 1700 m/amp 3S cell battery, which is a fairly low cost set-up.
Tom Cole from Constellation exclusively flies electric power models and has an extensive collection. All are large built up models
and he flew his Feisler Storch with a 2.85 metre wingspan (112 inches) from the Black Horse models range. He uses an E/Flight 160 motor, which is equal to a 26cc 2 stroke petrol engine, driving a 20 x 10 propeller that requires 10 LiPo cells battery. Tom has added a clear matt finish to the iron on covering to give an authentic finish to the model.
Trevor Pearce flew a scratch built Piper Pawnee tug plane on the day. It has a 103 inch wingspan, weighs 15.5 kilos and the super-sized electric motor drives a 27 x 10 propeller. It has LiPo’s with an 8000 m/amp capacity and 12 cells. In the air it was capable of climbing nearly vertically with a large glider under tow.
Once again it was very successful day that was enjoyed by all who attended.

SCALE SOCIETY SOUTHERN BRANCH
The Scale Aircraft Society of South Australia (SASOSA) has long been an important and active special interest group in South Australia and
will continue to be so. The Scale Society members have visited many clubs and great interest has been shown by the membership in the scale models displayed and flown. Many members have expressed interest in joining the Society however have been dissuaded by the distance of travel to the bi-monthly meetings which are held north of Adelaide.
I believe there are a number of members who reside in the southern area who would get involved if the opportunity was presented. As such I have had discussions with the Secretary of SASOSA, Trevor Woolfitt, with the view of forming a Southern branch of the Society. This branch would be an extension of the existing Society and not in opposition to it. Application for membership and any fees payable would still sit with the Society. By forming the southern branch, I believe we can help in increasing interest in scale aircraft, building and flying.
The southern branch will operate in conjunction with the northern branch and perhaps have meeting in the alternative months. Meetings can be held at a southern club and I am at this stage suggesting the inaugural meeting at Noarlunga; meetings could then be rotated if desirable to other clubs. Meetings will include all facets of scale aeromodelling including building, flying and display events. The Southern branch would combine with SASOSA to promote the Society, this would include joint flyins etc.
What we need to do first is determine the degree of interest in forming a Southern Branch, after which an inaugural meeting will be planned. The SASOSA President and Secretary will be invited to attend to explain the workings of the Society and how they see the two branches working together.
