J anuary was a great month at the shop! I love to chat with our winter
visitors and see their latest projects. The classes have been very popular.
The tassel class was fun and informative. All the ladies in the class want another
class so I am working with Fidelis Fenno, B. F. Goodstitch Needlepoint to arrange
that. It was a perfect end to the Phoenix needlework market.
Lots of new things discovered at market. I am always amazed at the creativity
of the designers, who continue to provide us with such wonderful canvases to
stitch. So many goodies have been ordered for the shop—new threads, canvases,
scissors, books, laying tools and magnets. Some are pictured later in this
newsletter. The classes I took gave me great ideas and knowledge to pass on to
you. I am not a knitter but the yarn section had the most gorgeous colors of yarn
in every texture and color you could imagine. My goal is to learn to knit this year.
I just need extra hours in the day!
Just to let you know, some items are already in the shop as I write this letter.
June McKnight’s autographed "Bling" book, oriental designs from Sophia, new
colors in Threadworks floss overdyes, metallic threads, new Neon Rays, Neon Rays
Plus and Silk Lame. I am waiting anxiously for the Oriental Linen to arrive. I
stitched with this and liked the texture as well as the color it gave to the canvas.
This month the calendar is chock full of wonderful classes. We start off with
Margaret Kinsey teaching Rozachi, followed by Needle Painting with Tanja Berlin.
We end the month with Margaret Bendig's gorgeous Southwest Kimono class.
There are lots of opportunities for canvas enhancement, either private or group.
Don't forget our technique classes. So come and enjoying stitching while you
learn.
There are 10 new Quail Run Designs that will arrive in the next few days. Look
for more unique chickens, primroses, gladiolas and beach scenes. I have also
designed ornaments for your favorite local sports teams so look for these soon.
This is the year of the Dragon. Do you have your dragon to stitch? There will be
several wonderful dragon canvases in the store to choose from and lots we can
order. So take the Dragon challenge this year and stitch one!
Happy stitching. See you soon. My staff and I look forward to seeing you and
eager to help you with your projects!
From Susan’s Desk
Last month, Phoenix was fortunate to host The National NeedleArts Association
(TNNA) Winter trade show. Designers, shop owners, teachers, and suppliers from
across the country came to share what’s new, take classes, and meet colleagues. It
was a wonderful event. We are excited about the new products that were previewed
and that we are bringing to Quail Run.
This issue brings you a glimpse of some of the new items arriving soon.

Bits & Bites
Did You Know?
Q: What’s the difference between Basketweave and Continental and why would I choose one stitch over the other?
A: Continental and Basketweave are both “tent stitches” - that is, they are both a series of right-leaning stitches
that go across one intersection of the canvas threads from the lower left to the upper right. Both Continental
and Basketweave have the same appearance when viewed from the front side of the canvas. However, when
you examine the backside, or reverse side, of the piece stitched they appear very differently. Continental
stitching, because it is done in horizontal or vertical rows, has the appearance on the backside of a series of
ridges or ripples. Beasketweave, as the name suggests, has a woven appearance on the backside of the
canvas. The Continental stitch is always worked from right to left (or top to bottom); whereas Bastetweave is
worked in diagonal rows up and down the canvas.
Basketweave has several advantages over Continental; chief among them being that the canvas is not pulled
out of square. Continental, on the other hand, is a stitch that badly distorts the canvas shape. Also,
Continental is not as durable as Basketweave. And lastly, Basketweave (unlike Continental) does not require
one to turn the canvas at the end of each row. For all these reasons, Basketweave has become the preferred
method of doing the tent stitch. Generally speaking, today’s tent stitchers will do Basketweave whenever they
can and will do Continental only when they must. Having said that however, let me also add that we know lots
of stitchers who do only Continental and their finished pieces look good and they enjoy themselves doing it. So
there you have it.
Stitchers have fallen in love with snap trays. What’s not to love—they
enhance our décor, hold everything and anything, and collapse to down
to ‘nothing’ when needed. To offer you even more choices in designs,
Quail Run commissioned our own designs—celebrating the
southwestern theme we celebrate.

aahs from all who see it.

Overall View of
Stitched Flowers/Petals
Bring A Canvas To Life—Magnolias
To enhance the flower petals, two different over-7 dyed threads were used, one for the lighter areas and
one for the darker areas. This allows the hand painted dark and light areas to show through the stitches.
Two strands of the thread were used for light coverage.
When choosing over-dyed threads, chose ones with subtle color changes so that stripes do not appear. To
make over-dyed threads more flowing and continuous in color blending, add a solid color strand of floss or
silk.
For the closed petals, Encroaching Gobelin over 3 threads was the stitch used. The more open petals were
stitched using a vertical stitch as diagrammed. Finally, the full open petals were stitched with less dense
stitches as diagrammed.
This stitching goes quickly and requires no thread blending. It is important to secure the threads on the
backside using a Bargello tuck as diagrammed. To start, use an away knot 6" from where you are starting to
stitch. Run your needle under a few stitches then run around a thread or two and finally under a few more
stitches. Secure the end of each thread with a Bargello tuck so you do not have a tangle of threads to secure
later.
THREAD LIST
Flowers: Threadworx 1103, 2 strands
Threadworx 1903, 2 strands
Stems: Threadworx 1028
Buds: Seagrass 147
Background: High Cotton 214, 4 strands
The stems, buds and background will be covered in the next newsletter. I will use solid stitches and
decorative stitches on the stems, buds and backgrounds to accent the lightly covered areas of the design.

design that goes beyond Christmas. It’s a great

dazzling enhancement stitches and threads
which make the trees jump off the canvas.
