A Vine howdo you do?
The Hidden Vine Wine Bar & Bistro, a quaint little eatery tucked into Constitution Square that’s been closed for nearly a year, reopened this week.
On a recent evening, new owners Mario and Josie Letourneau hosted town dignitaries like Mayor Steve Woods, who used to frequent the spot. They opened officially Tuesday night with a new menu crafted by Head Chef Kevin Corso.
Justin and Jackie, two of the Letourneau’s three adult children, will be heading the restaurant as manager and bartender.
“The kids get along so well; I
think this is going to be a great family business,” said the warm and down-to-earth Josie, who raised her family in Newington.
When she saw The Hidden Vine up for sale last year she jumped on the opportunity to pursue a longtime dream. After discovering her family was as excited about the idea as she was, she went for it.
“My father owned a coffee shop on Franklin Avenue in Hartford many years ago; I used to help out there and I always wanted to open my own place,” Josie remembers.
If menus handcrafted out of cork and copper by their wine distributor aren’t evidence enough — wine is their specialty. Unusual selections from over eight countries are offered and staff underwent wine train-ing courses to learn about pairings. Jackie also offers a creative martini list. The “Joeytini” is named in honor of her 2-year-old son Gianni and

lived on Wednesday through the Newington Rotary Club, whose members presented the late philanthropist’s mother, Liz, with $18,893 for childhood can-cer research.
Newington Rotarians hosted a golf tournament fundraiser in late September for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, an international chari-
ty started by the Scott family, Connecticut natives.
Eight-and-a-half-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott passed away of neuroblastoma in 2004 after meeting her $1 million lem-onade stand fundraising goal and the organization has continued on her work ever since, raising more than $7 million to date.
“Because of people like you it’s happening, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my
heart,” Liz Scott told the group Wednesday with tears in her eyes.
She traveled from the fami-ly’s home in Pennsylvania back to Connecticut this week just for the Rotary event. Many of Alex’s relatives still live in West Hartford, where she spent her first years before moving to Pennsylvania for experimental treatments. It was her aunt who approached the Rotary Club in

Middlewoods of Newington honored at state levelStaff and the 54 residents of
Middlewoods of Newington Assisted and Independent Living Community were proud
to receive two of eight awards from the Connecticut Assisted Living Association at its 18th Annual Meeting and Awards Program, held recently at the Aqua Turf in Southington.
The “Young Leader of the Year” award went to Jeanie Banh, an LPN at Middlewoods in her late 20s who has managed the center’s wellness department for a little over a year.
When presenting the award to Banh, Connecticut Assisted Living Association represen-tatives praised her “exemplary leadership skills, maturity, and vision that inspire residents and staff members.”
Kathy Braga, executive direc-tor of Middlewoods, had even more praise for Banh, who she called “an incredible young woman.”
“She’s very relatable,” Braga said Monday. “She works very well with CNA staff and nursing staff and she’s also wonderful, kind and caring with the residents.”
Due to the fact that Banh began working in the field as a nursing assistant, she relates to all different staff members with ease and they feel comfort-able reaching out to her when needed.
In addition, the facility won a Best Practices Award for its inno-vative program “The Little E,” Midd lewoods ’ s m a l l - s c a l e interpretat ion of the annu-al “Big E” Eastern States Exposition.
After Lynn Tracey, activities director, learned that many res-idents grew up on farms and lots of others’ best memories from their younger days were of going to carnivals and fairs, she got right to work to make their favorite pastimes come alive.
Middlewoods’ first-ever pet-ting zoo came to be this past Oct. 24, giving residents the opportu-nity to interact with baby goats, sheep, alpaca, hens and other
farm animals. “What a great
thing it was — such a big hit,” Braga said of the event, which has already been scheduled again this coming spring.
“It was a wonderful oppor-
tunity for them tor reminisce about going to the fair or grow-ing up on a farm — just really special,” she added.
In addition to the live ani-mals, everyone enjoyed typical
fair treats like fritters, stuffed potato skins, fried dough and onion rings.
United Methodist Homes is the faith-based, non-profit orga-nization that owns and operates Middlewoods of Newington, Middlewoods of Farmington and a main campus in Shelton, Conn.
UMH’s facilities won five of CALA’s eight awards this year. And it’s pretty commonplace for the organization, which wins service awards almost yearly.
“I think it ’s because we’re innovative and we’re very mis-sion-based and relationship centered,” Braga explained.
Erica Schmitt can be reached at (860) 225-4601, ext. 210, or [email protected].

her mom, whose full name is actually Josephine.
Josie titled a children’s menu “Gianni’s favor-ites” after taking inspiration from her grandson’s pal-ate. Homemade macaroni and cheese, pasta with butter or tomato sauce and chicken fingers with fries are highlights.
“I thought – what does he like to eat when we go out? He’s our life; we treat him like a king,” she says.
But the adult crowd has a much more lavish menu to choose from. Appetizers take a front seat, since wine connoisseurs tend to prefer smaller dishes. There’s arancini — rice balls filled with ground meat, tomato sauce and mozzarella, then fried crisp. Eggplant bruschetta takes the spotlight — crostini topped with eggplant, roasted peppers, prosciutto, and homemade buffalo mozzarella. It’s served with vodka sauce and priced at $8.
The Letourneaus have kept pric-
es fairly reasonable, offering nightly specials and a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m.
Ten different entrees include C h i c k e n Saltimbocca, hand-ro l l ed gnocchi, and grilled salmon with spinach and risotto. Fresh seafood, produce and bread are deliv-ered daily. All meals begin with crusty
bread and extra virgin olive oil laced with Italian spices.

Happy Holidays from Hair on the SquareNewington residents young and
old get their beauty fix at Hair on the Square, and the 57-year-old salon is extending good wishes to everyone this holiday season.
“Happy holidays to all from Hair on the Square,” Tammy Selander, owner, said Wednesday. “We want to thank all our customers for giv-ing us a great year.”
To show their gratitude, the salon’s seven stylists are offering a variety of holiday specials and gift ideas. A table in the front entrance area boasts gifts for $20 and under, featuring the latest beauty tools and products at reduced prices.
Nicole, the newest stylist, is offer-ing 15 percent off haircuts and blow drying until the end of January, along with $15 off any chemical services, such as hair coloring. She has more than three years’ expe-rience in styling both men’s and women’s hair.
Selander not only wants to thank all her customers, but also her loyal team of stylists including Stephanie, another new addition to the team.
Then Debbie, who she says “has stuck by me through thick and thin.” A part-time stylist with many years in the industry, Debbie is offering a special all this month on ombre style coloring.
The Glitzy Girl Salon, a mobile pampering party created by Tracy, another stylist “on the Square,” was a smashing success this year and
the ladies hope it continues to be next year. Long-time customers are still happy to see Evelyn on staff, who has been working at the salon for more than 25 years, as well as Richard, the former owner. People can still find him there every morn-ing, cutting the hair of local police officers and public servants who have known him for decades.
Selander herself is happy to say she is now licensed to apply wigs, and many area residents seeking relief to their hair loss head to the salon.
The entire team is very involved with the community and hosted a number of different fundraisers this past year. They were up front and center in recent Pinktober efforts for breast cancer awareness, held a fundraising event for Parks and
Recreation’s summer programming and made generous donations to St. Mary School.
“We try to reach out to fami-lies because we’re a family-oriented salon,” Selander says.
This coming year they hope to stay just as active in the Newington community. They will also offer a new scheduling option for cus-tomers, allowing them to book appointments online.
Check their Facebook page for updates and more holi-day specials, at Facebook.com/HairOnTheSquareNewington. Hair on the Square is located at 148 Market Square. (860)-666-2283.

May 2012 to share her story. Three months later their first golf tournament was held, raising $11,000.
“Let’s put the squeeze on childhood can-cer” is the fundraiser’s motto, and the club hopes its message proves even truer each year.
“Next year the sky’s the limit,” said Rotary President Ed Silverstein. “We want to turn this into a bigger event than ever before.”
Tournament sponsors were presented with framed certificates at Wednesday’s meeting, including London and London, Farmington Bank, AD Home Healthcare and RBC Wealth Management, which employs Alex’s uncle.
Either Liz or her husband, Jay — Alex’s father — hope to attend the 2014 tourna-ment.
“We do our best to come out and show gratitude to people and express how much it means to kids who are fighting cancer and their families,” she said Wednesday,
before sharing a number of stories about her daughter and other children the charity has helped, bringing Rotarians and spon-sors to tears.
Although per Alex’s wishes the organi-zation funds research for all 23 different
childhood cancers, a clin-ical trial performed on nine children carrying her same illness had a profound impact in par-ticular. Money raised by Alex’s Lemonade Stand funded the trial, which put eight of the nine par-ticipants’ illnesses into remission. The Scotts had the opportunity to meet two of those fami-lies and witness firsthand how her dream to cure childhood cancer is com-ing true.
The Third Annual Newington Rotary Golf Tournament to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand will be held Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 at Indian Hill Country Club.
