Congratulations to last weeks winners

Abundance:

Thanks to our wonderful gardeners we have an abundance of fruit, vegetables and flowers at the school. If you wish to have some of this lovely produce you need to ask either at the office or the gardener. Thank you.

Little People:

Are there any soft-sculpture experts out there???? We would love you to come and share your expertise so that we can get our new project up and running as soon as possible.

Over the next few months the children will be creating ‘Little People’ and dressing them in some of the pre-loved school uniforms that are taking up space in our second-hand uniform cupboard. These buddies will be decorating the fence and other strategic areas in the school yard. If anyone has any old stockings, tights, fibre fill, wool, any other suitable stuffing materials, kiddie size shoes, wigs, mops, gloves, school coloured ribbons, plastic bags and any other suitable hair options we would really appreciate if you could to send these in as soon as possible so we can begin construction. Thank you.

Announcements and Meetings:

Reports will be given out on Wednesday. If you have any concerns or questions please make a time to speak with your child’s teacher.

As we enter the last week of Semester 1, I’d like to acknowledge all the work done by staff to advance our student’s achievements through rich learning experiences.

The Magenta class has been very busy with their Under the Sea topic and have made, painted, cut, pasted and baked as well as performed many aspects of this topic.

We have the Biddy class sleeping over on Wednesday night as the culmination of their term’s focus on the Outdoors and their reading rewards program. I’m very pleased to see that most students have achieved the required amount of reading.

Sheridan class has been looking at Space, using the topic in their writing, designing and making their own planets, building moon habitats and replicating the nano-rover which was used on the moon.

Enriching these experiences have been Indonesian language and culture, investigating Federation, Aboriginal heritage, the building of a Mia-mia and Log Cabin. Other key learning experiences have been through Science investigations of Yeast and microbes (Breadmaking), sorting out different types of materials as well as dancing, making and listening to music and developing skills in football and other ball sports.

Next term students will be focused on athletics during their sport time. The Interschool carnival will be hosted by Lake King PS this year.

Mathletics:

Congratulation to Melita, Dale and Fletcher for achieving 85% or above over the first 6 months of Mathletic activities.

Pool

I will be attending a meeting on Tuesday with the contractors, Cr Armstrong and other stakeholders to share the planned program of works, access and environmental issues in regard to the refurbishment of the pool.

The Margaret Cotton festival is to be held here on August 22nd, if anyone wishes to assist in any way please contact Mrs Barrett-Lennard.

The School Council met last week and formally adopted the reviewed Bullying Policy. Council had a lengthy discussion on a request to run a lunchtime Scripture Union program, this request has been declined. We welcome Mr Barry Rick to the council as the Community representative. This takes the total membership of the council to 9 including 4 staff.

Our annual community fundraiser, At the Hainsworth concert was a great success due in large part to the enthusiasm of the students who volunteered to organize and perform. A big thank you must go to Tahlia Dunkeld for coordinating rehearsals, comparing the show as well as performing. Thank you also to Lachie Shalders, Jazmyne Wynne and Caitlyn Harley for all their work in preparation for the concert.

Kindergarten Term 3

Kindergarten families are reminded that Kindy goes to 3 days next term – Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. If any KP1 parents can come in as a helper on Tuesdays between 11 and 12.30 please see Mr O’Nions.

Environmental Work:

Our senior students (Years 4 to 7) will be participating in a revegetation project in partnership with staff from Parks & Wildlife. Over the last 8 years DPaW has planted more than 350ha to link the 2 largest reserves (Lakeland and Lake Bryde) in the Lake Bryde Recovery Catchment. It is hoped that these plantings will reduce salinity problems and further manage surface water runoff. Seeds for this project are all collected, cleaned and planted by DPaW staff. In 2014 DPaW are planting 90 000 seedlings which have been grown at local Wheatbelt nurseries.

Students will be traveling to a designated area just off the Pingrup road on Thursday and will be enjoying a sausage sizzle for lunch, thanks to Parks & Wildlife and our local P&C. Please ensure your child has some sturdy boots or covered shoes for this excursion.

Happy Honeymoon!

Mrs Gilmour will be away on her belated honeymoon until week 4 of Term 3 and we wish her a safe and happy adventure overseas. Mrs Shalders will be leading the Biddy class during Mrs Gilmour’s absence.

We are looking for some old umbrellas that are no longer needed for our art project. If you have any please send them into school. Also we would love any corks, bottle tops, glass jars or anything along these lines to stock up our art cupboard. Thanks Mrs Gilmour

This was the best game of the term, great sportsmanship shown by all players. Well done to Charlotte and Tom who both kicked supergoals for the respective teams!

The Black Hammers continued their dominance and make it through to the grand final undefeated!

On Friday the 3rd place match will be played at 11am, with the grand final following.

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

• Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.

• Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.

• Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)

• Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

• Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.

• Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.

What to do if your child gets a cold

No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

• Rest: This need not be in bed.

• Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.
