“Will you marry me?” Four little words, uttered from
bended knee, flashed on aJumbotron screen, or tuckedinside a fortune cookie. Andfollowing the almostinevitable “I will” comesthe scramble for a ring. The ring. Either stashedin a box in his jacketpocket, hidden in dessert,or yet to be selected, thering is what seals thedeal, what makes every-thing that precedes it –and is to come – official.
Indeed, the engagementring has been a symbol of aman’s commitment and sin-cerity since Roman times, when a simple iron hoop, known as a “betrothal ring,” didthe job. But along came the
Archduke Maximilian ofAustria, a man to whom brides
everywhere owe a great deal. His proposal to Mary
of Burgundy in 1477 was accompanied by what is said
to be the first documented gift of a diamond engagement ring.
She married him the following day. Short engagements, it
seems, were the style in those days, even though Pope
Innocent III had decreed in 1215 that a longer engagement
period would be a desirable thing.
The ante for an engagement ring was upped during the
Renaissance, when gold and other precious metals, sometimes
used in combination, formed the ring of choice. The rings were
more than plain bands, though, as the metals were worked to
include ornamentation like love knots, and later engraved
with names, dates, and sentiments (“poesies”), hence, the
“posy ring.” Those rings that did include stones were elaborate
in design, with the gems set in the form of flowers, letters, and
various other motifs. If diamonds were present, which they
might be in the case of very rich suitors, they were often left in
their natural crystalline state. Regardless of whether the ring
flashed with a sparkly stone or bore a personal message, it was
worn on the ring finger, left hand, the finger thought to con-
tain the vena amoris, a vein directly linked to the heart.
Things changed with the discovery of diamonds in Brazil in
the 18th century, and again in Africa in 1870. With larger sup-
ply came affordability: the precious gem that was once
reserved for the fabulously wealthy could now be enjoyed by
those not so rich and not so famous. Victorian women from all
stations in life picked up on this newly achievable symbol of
his love. They too could enjoy what had previously been unat-
tainable for people in their economic class. Ring styles were

diverse, with small stones arranged in either geometric pat-
terns or in the shapes of flowers or other decorative figures.
Things changed in the diamond ring world in 1886, when a
three-and-a-half carat diamond displayed in the window of
Tiffany & Co. was shown mounted on six tall prongs. This
ahead-of-its-time ring would become the most popular style
sought by 20th century brides. Because the beauty of a dia-
mond is the way it seems to twist light and shoot out fire, the
theory behind this new style was, according to a spokesman for
the famous jewelry store, to “lift the diamond away from the
band, permitting a more complete return of light and maxi-
mizing the stone’s natural brilliance.” But brides of the day
weren’t ready for this. Not quite yet.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the oxyacetylene torch
was invented. This unromantic-sounding tool made possible
lovely craftsmanship – piercings and milgraining, scrolling and
filigree detailing – to be worked on the metal of choice, plat-
inum. The good thing about platinum, according to Stanley
Bright, owner of A & M Jewelers in Baltimore, is that when it
was worn, it smudged, rather than wearing away, as is the case
with gold. The degree of detail seen in these antique rings is
unlikely to be seen again, according to Bright, because each
piece was so labor-intensive. Into these white settings (white
gold became a less expensive alternative to platinum in the
first part of the 20th century) were placed old European-cut
diamonds. A round cut with not as many facets as today’s bril-
liant cut, these diamonds popular during the Edwardian peri-
od had a taller pavilion than modern stones. They were typi-
cally mounted into a recess carved into the band to make way
for the stone and then secured by a bead setting. Favored dia-
