Nay Pyi Taw, 6 Jan
Cotton growers in Tatkon
Township of Nay Pyi Taw
Council Area expect to see
a high cotton yield about
six million viss from their
forthcoming harvest of
Ngwechi-6 long staple
cotton. Although growers
fetched K 900 per viss
of cotton last year, the
purchase price of private-owned cotton purchasing
centers for a viss of cotton
at the beginning of harvest
time is only K 850.
Thanks to a coordinated
approach to the price by Nay
Pyi Taw Council in order
to generate more incomes
of cotton growers, mobile
cotton purchasing centers of
the Ministry of Industry and
Tatmadaw textile factories
were being kept open to
buy cottons at reasonable
prices. As a result, the
market price of cotton hasreached K 1100 per viss,
thereby generating more

CaraCas, 6 JanVenezuelan lawmakersre-elected a staunch ally of
Hugo Chavez to head theNational Assembly on Sat-urday, putting him in line to
be caretaker president if thesocialist leader does not re-cover from cancer surgery.
By choosing the incum-bent, Diosdado Cabello, the
Chavista-dominated legis-lature cemented the combat-ive ex-soldiers position as
the third most powerful g-ure in the government, afterChavez and Vice President
Nicolas Maduro.As a patriot ... I swear
to be supremely loyal in eve-

by our Comandante Hugo
Chavez, Cabello said as hetook the oath, his hand on theconstitution.
He had earlier warnedopposition politicians againstattempting to use the Nation-
al Assembly to conspireagainst the people, sayingthey would be destroyed if
they tried.Thousands of the presi-
dents red-clad supportersgathered outside parlia-ment hours before the vote,
many chanting: We are allChavez! Our comandantewill be well! He will return!
If Chavez had to stepdown, or died, Cabellowould take over the running
of the country as Assemblypresident and a new electionwould be organized within
30 days. Chavezs heir ap-
parent, Maduro, would bethe ruling Socialist Partycandidate.
Chavez, who was diag-nosed with an undisclosedform of cancer in his pelvic
area in mid-2011, has notbeen seen in public nor heardfrom in more than three
weeks.Ofcials say the
58-year-old is in delicatecondition and has sufferedmultiple complications since
the 11 December surgery, in-cluding unexpected bleedingand severe respiratory prob-

gave the clearest indication
yet that the government waspreparing to delay Chavezsinauguration for a new six-
year term, which is sched-

the constitution after his winin the Assembly, Cabelloslammed opposition leaders
for writing a letter to foreignembassies in which they ac-
cused the government of em-ploying a twisted reading
of the charter.
Get this into yourheads: Hugo Chavez was
elected president and he willcontinue to be president be-yond 10 January. No one
should have any doubt ... thisis the constitutional route,
he said as fellow SocialistParty lawmakers cheered.

that the rule runs contrary tothe laws of physics, as driv-ers who are operating theirvehicles at normal speeds

Vehicles must cometo a complete stop at yel-low lights unless part of the

Yellow lights in China

Vultures are only birdsRecently, six vultures took a r est at the Gr eat
Pagoda Shwedagon in Yangon, the commercial
hub an d the most populous city of Myanmar .
People had contrasting views on their visit. Some took it as a bad omen, while others view
it as a good sign.
In fact, these big birds would be in their
seasonal jour ney south just tr ying to escape the
harsh northern winter. Many bird species do
wintering, migra ting in groups, some in very
large groups, to warm er r egions of the south.
So these vultures made a short stay at our
awe-inspiring pagoda while in kittle on their
way towards wintering grounds in temperate
regions.
Many Myanmar people see vultures as
ungraceful and inauspicious, and some even
regar d them evil or ominous just for dining on
dead or decaying animals. In r eality they like hyenas ar e scavengers
Mother Nature has created as public workers
that clean all dead an imals by feeding on car rion.
If Mother Natur e has not created scavengers,
forests and natural grasslands everywhere
ar ound the world will be contaminated with a
large number of decaying car casses as predator s
mostly hunt and feed only on living prey.
Vultures or condors as they ar e called can
y high in the sky for long hours in search of
food. They can endur e and sur vive the har sh
environs an d weather conditions, as many of
the species live in semi-desert r egions. Even th e
Japanese-made car Nissan Condor is named
after th ese big birds in honour of their strengthand endur ance.
In point of fact, vultures ar e just like other
wintering bir ds. They do not br ing or r epresent
any bad omen or good sign for any par ticular
place or p erson. The six vultures were visitors
taking a short r efuge at our sacr osanct pagoda
as the fast growing city has less trees and mor e
high-rise concrete buildings. There should not
be any illogical fear because vultures ar e only
birds.
