Leave Nelson Primary and walk down Clement Street.
At the end turn right onto the Parade and walk up to the start of the road works and the BMW show room. Cross the road and head up Newhall Hill (the left fork next to the showroom).

Did you know that over 600 people worked in
this factory at the height of the trade and they were makers of this product for
the Royal family – so they were the best!
The road opposite the Gurdwara temple is Vittoria Street – go along there until the next road junction. New Standard Works is on your right.
Q4: The blue building on your right has been used as a Sikh temple since the
1970s. It was actually built in 1844. What do you think it might have been
before it became a Sikh temple?

The answer is: It was built as a Chapel. It has had 6 types of church or chapel
using the building before it became a Gurdwara. Buildings often change uses,
but it keeps them from dereliction and in the state of the New Standard
Works.

Arrive 9.55am: Split into 2 groups. One group starts with Suzanne outside 5 minutes, (looking at the outside of the building), then Suzanne leads ground floor and basement for 10 mins One group goes into the ground floor to look at evidence and resources – Mark Higgins/teacher led. 15 mins, then swap over.
Leave 10.25am – walk to Coffin Works to arrive at 10.45 (a couple of things to look for en route, can include a 5-10 min break in St Pauls churchyard)
When you come out the building turn right into Regent Place, the road which runs alongside the New Standard Works.

PART 2
Q7: Can you find this factory owned by Deakin & Francis which is next door to
the New Standard Works on Regent Place. This company have been
manufacturing cufflinks for 230 years. Before they moved here, which very
famous inventor lived on this spot?

The answer is: Improvements to the steam engine. His design was in 1765. Its
efficiency played a huge part in changing the way that goods were
manufactured. His steam engine went on to power machinery, locomotive
trains and ships during the Industrial Revolution.
Walk to the end of the road and turn right into Caroline Street.

Head down the hill towards St Paul’s Church.
At the end of the road turn right – can you see the church at the bottom of the
hill?

Walk through the churchyard to the bottom right corner and turn right into Charlotte Street.

At the end of Charlotte Street turn left into Newhall Street. You’ll see the old Assay Office on your left. Cross the road at any point - if you continue left up newhall Street you’ll come across some traffic lights where you can cross safely.

Fleet Street is on the same side as the Queens Arms pub. Walk up Fleet Street
Walk up Fleet Street until you see the sign for the coffin works

Enter through the courtyard gates.
10.45: Split into 2 groups. One into the Stamp Room / One into the Courtyard, 15 mins, then swap over.

11.15 leave and head back to school 20 mins
Get onto the canal towpath. Opposite the coffin works is a bridge. Turn left.
Walk along the canal until you reach the exit for the NIA. This is St Edwards Road. Turn left and head back to school.

PART 3
Once you are on the canal towpath turn left. You will go under a road bridge.
