From the Property ManagerMeg Lorente
As we enter the heat of summer, your POA is busy ensuring Stone Oak remains the unique community it is. As discussed in prior months, we have made major changes in both our irrigation system, and our landscaping, to help conserve our most precious resource - water.
Our maintenance team works continuously monitoring our system, and making repairs as necessary. More than 300 sprays and rotors have been eliminated, as well as five water meters. Due to periodic rain events, their hard work, and the benefits of compost, the turf system has been turned off since September of 2013, with only bubblers on trees working as necessary. SAWS has noted our efforts, and become a partner in our continued effort to save water. Many of our islands now have more hardscape in their landscaping, and in some areas, more drought tolerant plants have been utilized. In addition, our team is currently upgrading our system along Evans Road to ensure leaks and other issues are found quickly, and timely repairs can be made.
We also hosted a Rain Barrel Workshop to educate residents on the benefits of catching rainwater, and our office has supplied residents with educational materials from SAWS and the Trinity Glen Rose Water Conservation District. Our goal is to help educate, and set an example for the community, as well as other associations throughout San Antonio. We are planning another Rain Barrel Workshop in September, so continue to watch our website for more information!
What Is Being Built There & Who Is New In Stone Oak?
Autumn Leaves Alzheimer’s and Memory Care at 20272 Stone Oak Parkway has completed construction, and looks forward to opening in July. In addition, Kneaders Bakery is moving along with their construction near the corner of Hardy Oak and Stone Oak Parkway. Near the back gate of Reagan High School, on Huebner Road, construction for a new preschool is underway - The Pineapple School. Our office has had many inquires about the construction on the corner of Evans and Stone Oak Parkway. At this time, we are not aware of any plans for any building on the site- any plans would be submitted to our office for review in accordance with the Stone Oak Master Plan.
We recently welcomed many new businesses to our Stone Oak family, and hope you will join us in welcoming them to our community: Love To Swim, Smokey Mo’s BBQ, Waves Blow Dry Bar, Pets Barn, Canyon Golf Dentistry, and Venetian Nails in Stone Canyon Crossing at the corner of Evans and Stone Oak Parkway; Advanced Auto Parts and Pure Barre in the Stone Ridge Shopping Center at 281 and Evans; Galpao Gaucho and Juicer Hereos at Alta Vista on the corner of Hardy Oak and Stone Oak Parkway; Mulle58 and Captain Ben’s Seafood in the Shops of Hardy Oak, also on the corner of Hardy Oak and Stone Oak Parkway; Salon 55 on Stonehue, and Bright Smiles on Med Court. Welcome to Stone Oak! We are glad you are here!

Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District Water Conservation Audit
During 2013, much like 2012, our average rainfall hovered around 32 inches District-wide. Unfortunately, most of this was received during sporadic weather events throughout the year. Case in point, we received ten inches of rain over Memorial Day weekend. High rainfall within such a short timeframe results in much of that rain running off into our streams and rivers providing little to recharge our aquifers. Please bear this in mind as we head into summer. While all rainfall events are welcome, monitors wells into the Trinity Aquifer throughout the District still reflect record lows.
Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGRGCD) would like to ask for your continued help in reducing demand on groundwater resources. We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problem areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead.
Please contact us at 210-698-1155 with questions, or to schedule a free in-home audit!
To learn more about Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District, please visit us at www.trinityglenrose.com.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and remaining 1/2 cup of sugar until smooth. Add egg yolks and beat well. Mix in pineapple and vanilla.
In another medium bowl, beat cream until whipped. Fold egg whites into cream cheese mixture, then fold in whipped cream. Pour filling over crust and freeze until set, about five hours or overnight.

Proper Summer IrrigationLower your water bill with proper summer irrigation.
By Dr. Calvin Finch
Many South Texas homeowners have realized that their Zoysia, Bermuda or buffalo grass lawns can go dormant for the hottest, driest part of the summer and then green up within days when the rains begin again. Even St. Augustine grass in the shade can survive a San Antonio summer without watering. Choosing the dormancy option is the best way to keep your water bill low, but even if you choose to have a green lawn, the bill can be relatively low.
The average 8,000 square foot lawn uses nearly 3,500 gallons every time it is irrigated in mid-summer. Eliminating even two irrigation cycles in a month saves a tremendous amount of water and lowers your water bill. Grass appearance will be slightly less lush, but grass health will be fine.
Another option to save money is to follow our weekly irrigation advice in the WaterSaver e-newsletter, http://www.saws.org/conservation/newsletter/. This online advice offers recommendations based on weather data that tells us how much water your lawn needs to stay green. The program was tested in South Texas for four years and over 5,000 homeowners have signed on to receive the information for their lawn every week. SAWS will send a personalized e-mail with your advice on the day of your choice.
IRRIGATIONCHECK-UP
At least once each month, your irrigation system needs a check-up. Follow these steps.
Turn on each zone for a few minutes and watch the sprinkler heads. Are they spraying in the right direction? Are there any “gushers” indicating a broken head or missing nozzle?
Turn on any soaker or drip lines and watch them run for a few minutes. A damaged soaker hose must be replaced because it will not work properly and does not repair well.
Check your rain sensor. Is it working? Internal disks must be replaced every two years.

Easy Ways to Be Energy EfficientEnergy efficiency – it’s as easy as flipping off the lights
when you leave a room or keeping your thermostat at
a comfortable rather than cold setting on a hot day. A
typical family spends about $2,000 a year on home utility
bills. Heating and cooling equipment accounts for half
of a home’s energy use, followed by large appliances
and electronic devices, water heating equipment and
lighting.
Below, we have included a few easy, yet often overlooked,
steps you can follow to make the most of your energy
use. If you’re committed to saving energy and money,
consider going the extra mile with more comprehensive
tips we’ve provided for each category to achieve greater
efficiency.
Set your thermostat between 78 and 80 degrees
during warm months. During colder months, a
thermostat setting of between 68 to 70 degrees is
recommended.
Use a programmable thermostat to manage your daily
heating and cooling needs. Try a free CPS Energy
Savers Smart Thermostat.
Try ceiling or portable fans to circulate air and makes
you feel cooler. Reverse your fan in winter time to
push the warmer air down.
Turn off the television, fan and lights or lamps when
you leave a room.
Buy CFLs and LEDs to replace less-efficient
incandescent bulbs. Go with the Fluo!
Purchase energy-efficient appliances and products.
Check the Energy Guide label and look for the
ENERGY STAR® logo when purchasing these items.
Take advantage of our home efficiency rebates!
Turn off or unplug electronic devices, such as
computers, power tools, cell phone chargers, digital
cameras, and MP3s, when they are not being used.
Reduce your use of hot water – take short showers,
use cold water to wash clothes, etc.
Try natural gas instead -- Gas water heaters, dryers,
and cooktops are more energy efficient than their
electric counterparts. Consider a Natural Gas
Rebate
Perform a home energy audit, through CPS Energy
Savers, to reduce common inefficiencies.
