Discussion has been raging in the NE1 offices lately about what constitutes the perfect summer’s day accompaniment. Firmly entrenched in one camp we have fans of the humble ice cream, frequent poppers to the parlours across the city and possessing the belief that life is greatly improved with the addition of a flake. Then there are those who look towards Newcastle’s watering holes at the first sight of sunshine, choosing to occupy a beer garden with a glass of something cold and refreshing. Finally there are the mixologists amongst us who, hot on the heels of NE1’s recent Cocktail Week, propose that no sweltering afternoon is complete without a drink in their hand that’s got a tiny and ironic umbrella sitting in the top of it.Whoever’s right, you currently hold in your hands a one-stop shop to all the great goings-on in Newcastle – it’s cheaper than a mojito, better for you than a beer, and lasts a lot longer than a 99, so dig in.

NE1’S NEWCASTLE RESTAURANT WEEKIT’S OUR FAVOURITE TIME OF THE YEAR. RESTAURANT WEEK IS BACK!
With over 45 venues signed up to take part in Newcastle Restaurant Week, this summer’s event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. The NE1 initiative runs from Monday 5th until Sunday 11th August and will see chefs across the city serving up culinary delights at discounted prices. As well as delighting foodies with dishes from all over the world, the event also plays a vital role in boosting the city’s economy. In fact, at last year’s event, takings at some restaurants were up over 90% on the previous year. “Newcastle’s vibrant restaurant scene is one of the city’s real strengths,” says NE1’s Chief Executive Sean Bullick.“It is befitting that, as the culinary capital of North East England, Newcastle has an event that celebrates the fantastic quality and diversity of the city’s restaurateurs.“NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week has really captured the imagination of region’s food lovers and continues to go from strength to strength,” he adds.During the week over 50 restaurants in the city will provide a discounted menu, usually including signature dishes alongside some creations cooked up exclusively for the event.Daring diners can explore exotic cuisine they may otherwise avoid, or sample some of Newcastle’s finest restaurants for as little as £10 to £15 per person. Most offers cover at least two courses, sometimes with drinks and additional special offers and encompass virtually every type of cuisine imaginable. Whether it’s the contemporary British flavours of OAK, the fiery Mexican
food of Las Iguanas or the classic refinement of Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse, there’s a restaurant that’s sure to satisfy every appetite. And, no matter which restaurant you choose, you can be assured you’re getting a great deal! Sean says: “With NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week, the objective was simple. Firstly, we wanted to provide an attractive offer that would entice more people in to the city and encourage customers to discover new places to

dine. Secondly, we wanted to provide an opportunity for the city’s restaurants and chefs to show off their skills and delight the new customers welcomed through their doors during the week.”The major strength of NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week is the diversity on offer, and there couldn’t be a better time to try something different. Mannaza Korean Grill House, based in Taylors & Tanners Court near Clayton Street, is just one of Restaurant Week’s success stories. “We are proud to be Newcastle’s only Korean restaurant,” says restaurant proprietor and manager Nan Wang. “We’ve been open just over two years now and have welcomed
thousands of eager diners looking to sample our unique concept. NE1 Restaurant Week highlights the diversity of our city and pays particular attention to the smaller restaurants, like us, to help share our delicious cuisine with a wider audience.”If you fancy trying something a bit different, Mannaza may be right up your street, as Nan explains: “Each table within our restaurant is fitted with its own table grill which allows all diners the opportunity to cook their own dishes at their table, perfectly to their liking.”So what are their most recommended dishes? “From our main course menu I’d suggest always ordering from the

grill section to get the full Korean dining experience. I would definitely recommend the freshly sliced, marinated pork with squid. Our side orders are also really tasty, kimchee being the most popular, but if you’re looking for something different then sample the sliced radish with chilli and vinegar.“Last year we saw a great number of first time Korean diners visit our venue and we’re proud to say that they’ve now become regular faces that we see time after time.” But Mannaza is just the tip of the iceberg in terms Restaurant Week’s success. Another Asian-inspired restaurant to have received significant benefits is Fat Buddha at the top of Pilgrim Street. In the Restaurant Week in January, its takings were up 93% on the same period last year and head chef Simon Whelan is justifiably proud of the restaurant’s success. “We definitely noticed a boost in business last time around, especially from customers that hadn’t tried us before, and we have since noticed those customers returning to the restaurant. So the added boost to local trade is significant.”Fat Buddha offers supreme Chinese, Thai, Korean and Malaysian cuisine in an ultra-stylish setting and boasts impeccable service. Its menu for Restaurant Week will revisit old favourites and deliver an exciting range of new dishes. Simon says: “By far the most popular choice is our signature dish Honey Chilli Chicken, but a personal favourite of mine is the Thai Red Curry Beef with red chilli, galangal and coriander.” So how do you get your teeth into these great offers? Easy, just head to the NE1 website and choose from the multitude of restaurants and offers available. Once you’ve narrowed it down (it may take a while given the huge choice available), download a voucher and book your table at the restaurant(s) of your choice, mentioning the NE1 Restaurant Week deal. Starting my own business has been the craziest ride of my life! Since being made redundant in January 2012, I decided it was high time to do something I truly loved and so I began what was then my little business The Great British Cupcakery…and look where we are now! I can’t believe it’s
only been seven weeks since we opened the doors to our first Bakehouse & Parlour on Newcastle’s fabulous Quayside. We’ve found ourselves so busy since opening and have proven to be quite the hit with local residents and workers. We can never seem to make enough cakey goodies, they certainly don’t hang around for long with Billionaire Brownie, Carrot Cake, Eton Mess Cupcake and our infamous cheesecake proving to be some of our most popular items. I have also realized since opening the parlour that men are most definitely our most unprepared customers, we’ve had so many last minute orders from men forgetting their partner’s birthdays, it’s crazy! So men of Newcastle, try and remember next year, we are definitely keeping you in your Mrs’ good books! We love the city so there was no other choice when it came to selecting a location for our Bakehouse. The Quayside is a real foodie haven and has a cool, artisanal vibe that we love being part of and there are always great events taking place on our doorstep. Here at the Parlour you’ll find everything from a cupcake and coffee to bespoke celebration cakes. We also offer afternoon tea and vintage tea parties, which are proving to be extremely popular, with exclusive hire of the Parlour also available.

If there’s any part of the city that quite encapsulates the journey Newcastle has taken over the last 20 years, it’s the Quayside. After years of decline in the area, an ambitious plan was drawn up to regenerate it and bring financial, recreational and social vibrancy back to the banks of the river. And it certainly delivered its aims, given the array of bars, restaurants, hotels, offices, flats, coffee shops and creative spaces now nestled along the waterline. Tim Evans is a partner in Knight Frank, one of the most forward-thinking and inventive property consultants in the region, which not only played a key role in making the area what it is today, but is also still based on the riverside at St Ann’s Quay. “From the very beginning there was a vision and an aspiration to create an environment of quality,” Tim told us, “and even though some of that development is now over 20 years old, it has very much stood the test of time. We consider it a fine river front which is up there with the best in Europe and it is one of
the key business districts in the city”The impressive standard of office space available on the Quayside means it is now home to a number of major businesses, including national law firms like Ward Hadaway and Bond Dickinson - which has its headquarters and over 600 members of staff in the picturesque Trinity Gardens. The same building is also a base for the Royal Bank of Scotland’s corporate and institutional banking operations.Popular bistro Cafe 21, the smart and stylish Eye On The Tyne, the Broad Chare pub - which serves up classic homemade dishes - and Italian favourite Piccolino also call Trinity Gardens home. They’re also just a short walk from the likes of La Tasca, Gusto, the Malmaison hotel, Babucho, Uno’s and Pan Haggerty. The Quayside also offers bespoke and quirky venues like the rustic pie and mash haven Redhouse, as well as one of Newcastle’s cosiest cafes and best kept secrets, Quay Ingredient.Every Sunday the Quayside market stretches from under the Tyne Bridge to the Millennium Bridge, giving bargain

hunters a chance to browse the various stalls, artisan bakeries, street food outlets and independent tea and coffee retailers. The bars along the river have become notable more for their laid back vibes, scenic views and incredible character. The Pitcher & Piano proves the most picturesque setting for a night out; whilst the legendary Crown Posada is as charming and old fashioned a pub as you could ever hope to find. Then there are those that specialise in outdoor seating like Chase, The Waterline and The Quayside, whilst bars like Livello and The Slug & Lettuce cater for the late night cocktail crowd. Want live sport? Try the Akenside Traders. Fancy a boogie? There’s the Quilted Camel or Bar 38. Every box gets ticked.Meanwhile, Quayside Seaside made a timely return this summer, offering the chance to kick back with a bucket and spade in the purpose-built beach complete with deckchairs, palm trees and golden sand. Finally the Newcastle City Marina now offers visitors a chance to moor right in Newcastle’s heart. Situated just under the Tyne Bridge, the Marina is one of the final pieces in the redevelopment jigsaw and once again makes the banks of this great city an integral part of its future.

Without two of the North East’s finest exports I doubt I’d be a comedian.Viz opened my eyes and my brain to a hitherto unrevealed world of filth and surrealism that had me religiously ordering and collecting it from my local village shop, much to the confusion, horror and judgement of the old dear who ran the place. Secondly, or it might have been before, I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter, I remember watching telly one night and this odd bloke in a white suit came on and said, “Watch me Vic Reeves on my Big Night Out on Channel Four”. Something in my brain clicked and I was there from the start. From there my love of comedy began, obviously I’d seen lots of comedy before, but these two things felt like I’d found them, or they’d found me. Viz and Vic Reeves were my gateway drugs into a new dimension of Richard Prior, Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, Monty Python etc etc etc.I few years ago I did a gig in a club in London that Vic and Bob were hosting, it was utterly surreal and exciting to be there and as I put the mic back in the stand after my set, I turned round to see them dressed as Mulligan and O’Hair, farting about like a couple of idiots. Woohoo! Rob Rouse headlines at The Stand in Newcastle from Thursday 25th until Saturday 27th July.

SPACE2… It’s vital for the future that young people across the city are inspired and given as much assistance as possible to help them find meaningful work. Set up by NE1, managed by the YMCA Newcastle and Solar Learning, Space2…aims to tackle the problem of youth unemployment by encouraging young people, between the ages of 13 and 18, to learn new skills and gain experience that will increase their chances of gaining employment when they leave school. At Space2…, in the heart of the city on Newgate Street, a programme of training, advice, placements, mentoring and apprenticeships has been established involving a series of city centre businesses. These include Lloyds Bank, Greggs, John Lewis, Sintons, Ward Hadaway and Wilmott Dixon Construction, and the list is growing all the time. One of the core components of the programme is the World of Work scheme which is an introduction to a range careers and professions and includes help with financial management.
