A SENSUOUS PROMISEThe fragrance of ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND.
Dear Readers,
The philosopher Immanuel Kant once said: “Those whose lives are the
most valuable fear death the least.” After 95 fulfilling years of life,
Annemarie Lindner, my mother-in-law and our company founder,
passed away in February. She laid the foundation for the worldwide
success our company now enjoys with creativity, determination, untiring
effort and great entrepreneurial skill. Her humor, her commitment and
the enthusiasm with which she interested so many people in her natural
cosmetics will never be forgotten. It was she who gave natural cosmetics
a voice in the form of ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Natural Beauty. Annemarie
Lindner’s principles still govern our creation of verifiably effective
products developed by innovative, sustainable means. Intent on seeing
her life’s work carried on into the future, she passed the management
of BÖRLIND GmbH on to her son Michael Lindner in 1985. Our children
Nicolas and Alicia Lindner are now the third generation of the family to
play an active role in company management and continue leading it into
the future, just as Annemarie Lindner would have wished. The grande
dame and pioneer of natural cosmetics will always live on in our hearts.
Sincerely yours,

ATTENTIVE SALESWOMAN Encouraged and supported by her family, Annemarie Lindner traveled
all over the country with her products. Her customers appreciated
her honest and competent advice.
CLEVER ENTREPRENEUR Annemarie Lindner was already
making natural cosmetic products in the GDR in 1955. She and her
husband founded BÖRLIND GmbH in 1959, together with business
partner Hermann Börner.
A MODEL FOR HER OWN PRODUCT, Annemarie Lindner’s own skin problems motivated her to become a cosmetician.
She used her cosmetic products throughout her entire life, consistently performing
each step in her skin care system.

A commanding presence until the
very end. Annemarie Lindner’s
ID often caused those who
saw it to do a double take. The founder
of BÖRLIND GmbH could easily be
mistaken for 20 years younger than
she actually was. Not only was she the
best advertisement for her brand, she
was also a tester and lifelong user of
her products. Born in Berlin in 1920,
Annemarie Lindner suffered from
severe acne as a teenager and later
as a young married woman. Initial
experiments with herbal treatments
helped her skin. When she realized that
plants had healing powers, the young
woman was so excited that she trained
as a cosmetician in Leipzig at age 27
and began making and successfully
marketing her own creams and facial
toners based on natural raw materials.
The joy she took in her success was
short-lived, however. After three
expropriations, she and her family

Annemarie Lindner proved what a

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS: DISCIPLINE
Her son Michael is now at the helm of
the company, assisted by his children
Nicolas and Alicia. Aware of how
much she had accomplished in her life,
Annemarie Lindner often said: “I am
a darling of fortune!” Indeed she was,
but she was also a courageous woman

captivated everyone she met with her
ageless beauty.

TALENT IN HER BLOOD
A HOLLYWOOD PEDIGREE Gwyneth Katherine Paltrow was born on September 27, 1972, in
Los Angeles, California. Standing 1.75 meters tall, the beauty made her breakthrough in Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’ in 1996. She had already displayed her talent in 1995 at Brad Pitt’s side in the thriller ‘Seven’. Other box office hits soon followed, including ‘A Perfect Murder‘ and ‘Great Expectations’, both released in 1998.
A WELL-DESERVED OSCAR Her emotional performance in Shakespeare in Love won over both the movie-going public and the Oscar jury in 1999: Paltrow won the Oscar for best actress, an Empire Award for best actress and a Golden Globe for best perfor-
mance by an actress in a motion picture. In 2006 she further under- scored her skills as a character actress in the drama ‘Proof‘ along-side Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal, earning her a Golden Globe nomination as best actress. She showed off her whimsical, funny side in 2001 in ‘The Royal Tenenbaums‘ and the comedy ‘Shallow Hal‘, even appearing in a fat suit in some scenes. Her perfor-mance as Pepper Potts, assistant to Robert Downey Jr. in the action- packed ‘Iron Man‘ series (2008, 2010 and 2013), was brilliant. Paltrow was honored with a star (No. 2427) on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on December 13, 2010.

She cut back on her career to spend

But her active commitment to healthy
eating, beauty and yoga has only
grown. The actress is very careful to
take good care of her body. She
started her blog, Goop, in 2008 as

regimen also includes yoga and Pilates
as well as a macrobiotic diet that she
is said to have copied from her good

results. Despite her age, Paltrow has
a radiant appearance and a perfect

green products with an ideology

people. Paltrow states that she has
no fear of aging: “A few gray hairs

she told People magazine in spring.
The 40s are a blessing, she says; she
feels much prettier today than she
did ten or twenty years ago and has
no desire to turn back the hands of

Around 600 B.C., the poet
Sappho wrote that if Zeus
had willed for a single flower
to reign as queen over the flowers,
it would surely be the rose. No other
flower is so adept at symbolizing
grace, perfection, beauty, vitality and
love – but also transience. Our mysti-
cal fascination with the rose, to which
even scientists fall prey, is fueled by
the ambivalence of love and suffering,
of blossoms and thorns. The precious
essential oil of the rose contains some
400 individual substances. Thus far,
only its main components have been
researched. Guylaine Le Loarer is one
of the flower queen’s many admirers.
The Head of Research and Develop-
ment for BÖRLIND GmbH is especially
fascinated with one particular type of
rose: the Black Forest Rose. The Black
Forest Rose was presented for the
first time at the Landesgartenschau
(state garden show) in Villingen-
Schwenningen in 2010, and has mean-
while garnered awards not just for its
beauty, but for its natural resistance
to disease as well. These traits make
the new variety of rose especially
desirable as a source of cosmetic
raw materials for harvesting.
“ Moisture is the best preventive measure.” GUYLAINE LE LOARER
Le Loarer’s team therefore chose it
as their subject for exploring one of
the most interesting areas of modern
cosmetic science, stem cell research.
PLANTS HAVE THE ABILITY TO HEAL THEMSELVES
Stem cells are genuine jacks-of-all-
trades without a pre-defined role in
the organism. Theoretically they can
perform a wide range of functions,
but they serve primarily for regene-
ration. If a plant is injured by being
cut, for example, the stem cells
produce generalized wound-healing
tissue. Once the injury is completely
closed up, the ‘quick fix’ becomes
a specific tissue type such as bark
Responsibility for nature
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
THE STEM CELL METHOD Plant stem cells, also known as meristematic cells, are used to stimulate skin cells and processes that can combat aging. Cultivated under standardized conditions, they are used as cosmetic raw materials or as suppliers of secon- dary plant substances. This ap-proach is highly sustainable, since the substance is created in the laboratory and only a small quantity of raw material is required for the extraction process. There is no need to cultivate the plants on large plots of land.
or shoots. The highly efficient stem
cells are located in both the plant
and its fruit. In the case of the Black
Forest Rose, the stem cells are taken
from the leaves.
FOR A NATURALLY RADIANT COMPLEXION
And the results are impressive
Together with Akott Group Italia,
the team of BÖRLIND researchers
isolated a fat-soluble and a water-
soluble extract that demonstrate
highly promising effects. “Developing
a new ingredient is exciting, but so is
incorporating its modes of action into
a suitable product,” says Le Loarer.
The lipo-extract is now being used for
the first time in the day cream belong-
ing to the new system-based skin care
series ENERGYNATURE, developed
by ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND specifically
for the target group over the age of
20. “The market offers very few skin
care products for this age range,” says
the expert. Consumers are forced to
choose between classic facial cream
and anti-aging cosmetics. Neither
are suitable for the condition of this
group’s skin. Young skin is still elastic
and supple, but changes start occur-
ring from age 20 onward. For instance,
the production of hyaluronic acid and
collagen decreases. Stress, an active
lifestyle and inadequate sleep leave
initial traces such as dryness lines,
pale skin and dark circles under the
eyes. This is where ENERGYNATURE
can help. The innovative new ingre-
dients in the vegan line combat the
premature aging process known
as pre-aging. In addition to stem cell
extract from the Black Forest Rose,
the skin’s natural mechanisms are

also activated by organic caffeine,
menthol derivative and a phyto-
nutrient from the cress plant. The
fresh fragrance underscores the
energizing effect of the products.
ENERGYNATURE Facial Gel has
been shown to increase skin moisture
by 32 percent – and this moisture
boost helps to reduce and conceal
visible signs of tiredness in the
skin. After all, moisture is the key
to youthful skin and is considered
the best tool to prevent skin aging.
This is where the lipo-extract in
ENERGYNATURE Day Cream comes
in. Skin moisture levels of test persons
increased by 40 percent in trials, their
skin became 12 percent smoother
and their skin’s natural hyaluronic
acid production increased by up
to 15 percent. The concentration
of hyaluronic acid, the skin’s own
natural moisture molecule, decreases

_What are the overall benefits of
the ENERGYNATURE product line?
It helps the skin help itself. We stimulate the skin’s own natural functions to restore optimum performance. Because cellular activity is so essential, all of the products contain organic caffeine. In addition, the special applicator for the eye serum is designed to motivate the target group of women age 20 and over to care for the sensitive skin around their eyes on a regular basis. That is extremely important from this age onward.
_Where did you get the idea for
the lipo-extract from the stem
cells of the Black Forest Rose?
When the Black Forest Rose was presented and officially named by the breeders W. Kordes’ Söhne at the 2010 Landesgartenschau, we quickly realized that this plant could be an interesting ingredient for our natural cosmetics from the Black Forest. The diverse properties of the rose make it a popular ingre-dient in cosmetics. It is anti-inflam-matory and soothing, while also supplying moisture and smoothing the skin. Because this rose is a new

influences, but can be boosted through
the use of products containing it as an
ingredient. The same is true of collagen,
which is responsible for the elasticity
of the skin. Extract from the Black

here as well. Le Loarer is excited: “The
modes of action of the lipo-extract are

variety, we can also assume that it has unique traits. We therefore thought it would make a good can-didate for stem cell research. This harmonizes with ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND’s philosophy of sustain-ability through responsible treat-ment of nature.
_What exactly does the lipo-extract do?
The lipo-extract from the Black Forest Rose facilitates better transport of water between the skin cells and stimulates the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production processes. The skin’s natural mois-ture balance is restored, leaving it smooth and velvety soft. In-vitro test results show cell hydration of up to 30 percent and confirm the extract’s moisturizing properties.

story – dark rings under the eyes, a

indulgences. Skin is at its zenith at 20.
Never again will it be as flawless and

production of elastin and collagen is
beginning to slow down. Minor under-

or overproduction are the only things
that may keep the skin from being its
best. If the skin produces too much
oil, it may tend to impurities. Or it
may suffer from a slight lack of
moisture, which is then exacerbated
by inadequate sleep, too much stress
and other environmental influences.
Many young women have a tendency
to combination skin in which zones
of the face can be both oily and dry.
In order for the skin to fulfill its
protective function and retain its
natural balance, good care tailored
to the respective skin type is crucial,
even in young adulthood.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY, EVEN FOR YOUNG SKIN
Thorough cleansing in the morning
and evening should be one element
of a regular and diligent skin care
routine. On the taboo list, however, are
cleansing products containing aggres-
sive, washing-active substances that
could cause irritation. A better choice:
Products based on a mild tenside such
as the Refreshing Cleansing Gel in the

impurities. Both products also remove
make-up gently and thoroughly. So
does the mild cleansing emulsion
in the ZZ SENSITIVE system-based
skin care series. Its pre- and probiotic
active ingredient complex helps the
skin protect its own natural flora.
From age 20 onward, young con-
sumers should learn to be consistent
in caring for their eye area as well.
This delicate skin zone suffers
especially quickly from partying till
dawn and lack of sleep. Dark shadows,
the first fine lines and eye bags may
appear as a result. ZZ SENSITIVE

and preserves moisture.

reduces dark under-eye circles with
hesperidin from the bitter orange and
revitalizes the skin with organic caffeine.
A cooling metal applicator provides a
refreshing boost and can also be used
for a relaxing or activating massage.
YOUNG SKIN DOES NOT NEED ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS YET
After cleansing, the daily routine
should also include skin care tailored
to the individual skin type. Young
women who want to take good care
of their skin often turn to anti-aging
products in the belief that these
will prevent wrinkles from forming –
hoping that ‘targeted moisturizing’
will prevent aging in the first place.
However, visible aging of the skin
does not begin until after 30. Active
anti-aging treatments with cosmetic
agents are not useful or effective
until that point. Creams developed
especially for older skin usually contain
active ingredients that young skin
does not yet need. They can be
too rich and may cause blemishes.
It is even possible that the active
anti-aging substances may disrupt
the skin’s natural ability to store water.
And that moisture is essential for
physiological processes and healthy
skin. Our skin needs an adequate
supply of water to function properly
as a protective and defensive barrier.
If that moisture is missing, the skin
loses its elasticity. It develops scaly
patches and becomes reddened and
itchy. According to experts, hydrating
the skin is one of the most effective
ways of combating aging, one of the
key objectives of the pre-aging series.
The team of researchers at BÖRLIND
GmbH followed this premise in
developing the new system-based
skin care series ENERGYNATURE.
The substances used in the products
for normal to dry skin, in particular
the Black Forest Rose, help restore
the skin’s natural moisture balance
and reduce any signs of tiredness.
The skin becomes smoother, feels
velvety soft and radiates its true
youthful beauty.

Are ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND
products natural cosmetics?
RENATE MEYERHOF, MUNICH
The term ‘natural cosmetics’ is not protected by law. This is why manufacturers use seals such as BDIH, NaTrue or Ecocert. However, these seals only certify the products themselves. BÖRLIND GmbH therefore opted for certification by CSE (Certified Sustainable Economics). These guidelines go significantly beyond the usual criteria for natural cos-metic certifications, because they include review and verification of not just the products but the entire company and its underlying socio- ecological philosophy. The CSE seal has been rated as ‘highly recom-mendable’ by www.label-online.de, a portal from Verbraucher Initiative e. V., a non-profit consumer initia-tive. Cosmetics from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Natural Beauty thus satisfy the criteria for certified natural cosmetics.
What are hormonally active
substances in cosmetics?
JULIA BEERBAUM, MAINZ
These are used as preservatives with a disinfecting, antimicrobial effect or as UV protection. However, they have an undesired estrogenic and/ or anti-androgenic effect as well.Products from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Natural Beauty are free of hormonally active substances.

THE PERFECT TONE
Make-up can erase red patches,
small blemishes and dark circles
under the eyes – provided it is the
right color for the user’s skin.
The bottom of the cheek or the
chin are the best areas for testing
make-up tone. You have found
the right make-up if you can
barely distinguish the nuance
from your natural skin color.
LAYER FOR LAYER
After cleansing and moisturizing,
cover small irregularities in the skin
and dark circles under the eyes with
concealer. Then apply make-up to
your forehead, cheekbones, the
bridge of your nose and your chin
and blend well with your fingertips,
a brush or a cosmetic sponge.
Then apply a final dusting of
powder to fix the make-up in
place and matte the complexion.
GENTLE SHAPING
‘Contouring’ is a game of light and shadows. It is a special technique for emphasizing
facial features. After a base of foundation has been applied to the skin, a powder such as ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Bronzing Compact Powder
or compact foundation is used to either shade the
desired area or highlight it. This makes the facial features
recede into the background or stand out accordingly. Contouring relies on the
principles of optical illusion.

SMELLING WITH OUR EYES Can scents be visualized? BÖRLIND GmbH and Berlin- based photographer Frank Burkhard were happy to accept this challenge. The result is the Fragrance Handbook in which the fragrances of the system- based skin care series can be experienced firsthand through modern still lifes. Visual represen-tation helps us put a name to the scents that we can differentiate. FRAGRANCE
An Italian vacation, the smell of Christmas
cookies or the perfume worn by a
first love – scents lure us into the past,
trigger deep emotions and bring back forgotten
memories. They also warn us of danger, such
as when something is on fire or food has
become spoiled. Immediately following birth,
infants use their vital sense of smell to guide
them to their mother’s milk. FRAGRANCES PENETRATE TO THE VERY CORE OF OUR EMOTIONAL BEING
Every olfactory cell has a direct neural con-
nection to the limbic system, the part of our
brain that gives rise to emotions and stores our
memories. All the scents we encountered from
birth onward are stored here together with the
situation in which we perceived them. In this
way, scents can trigger certain memories even
after many decades and evoke strong psycho-
active responses. They can make us feel happy,
scared or relaxed. They can help us fall asleep,
decrease the production of stress hormones or
simply make us feel good. Taking all this into
consideration, who wouldn’t want their daily
skin care routine to promote their sense of
well-being with high-quality ingredients and
pleasant scents? Finding the perfect fragrance
A sensuous promise
Fragrances usually play a subordinate role in natural cosmetics. At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, however,
they are an integral part of our philosophy.
FRAGRANCE
composition for a cream is a challenge, however.
Some natural ingredients such as algae have
their own inherent smell. The real artistry is
bringing the ingredients into harmony with
natural fragrances. Our sense of smell is closely
linked to our emotions, making this process even
more difficult. Everyone reacts to a fragrance
differently. What smells good to one person
might be repulsive to another. What’s more,
in contrast to synthetic fragrances, natural
fragrances volatilize very quickly. It cannot
simply be assumed that a cream will still smell
the same after an extended period of use.
Fragrance experiences are therefore still largely
uncharted territory in the world of natural
cosmetics. But not at ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND. THE PRODUCTS ARE DESIGNED TO DELIGHT THE SENSES
In order to crown the various system-based skin
care series with sensuous fragrances, the company
works together with perfumers in the French town
of Grasse who also collaborate with large perfume
manufacturers. “The basic benefits of cosmetics
are care and beauty. But we want to offer more.
We want the benefits of our products to be
experienced on an emotional plane – through
their fragrances – as soon as they’re applied.”
After all, fragrances trigger emotions.
