About Visvesvaraya Technological University:
About VTU Library:
About Conference:
As a tribute to the great visionary Sir M. Visvesvaraya, theGovernment of Karnataka established the Visvesvaraya TechnologicalUniversity (VTU) at Belgaum on 1st April, 1998 as per the VTU act 1994in order to affiliate and manage the engineering colleges, recognized bythe University Grants Commission (UGC) on 24th August 1999. This hasushered in a new paradigm in the field of technical education by bringingvarious engineering colleges affiliated earlier to different institutions, withdifferent syllabi, different procedure and different traditions under asingle umbrella. The setting up of VTU has brought uniformity inacademic and administrative functions of the engineering colleges inKarnataka. The VTU prides itself as the leading Technological Universityof India with vision to be among the global best in technical education, having 202 Colleges affiliated to it with Under Graduate course in 35disciplines and PG Programme in 87 disciplines and more than threelakhs students perusing their technical education.
VTU Library is continuing to evolve and is using new technologies toexpand their presence as vertical knowledge centers for informationsharing communities. With an aim of providing “Any time, Any whereAccess” to information, the library contributes and supports intransforming talent into engineers and business leaders. It plays aproactive role in enabling access to information resources of all kind andproviding innovative, responsive and effective service to meet thechanging needs of the academic community.
The VTU Library is a resource center for teaching, learning andresearch and also it is the hub of academic activity and is housed in a veryspacious & well lighted Building catering to the needs of students andstaff members. The present library collection consists of 40,000 Volumesof text and reference books and subscribes to 300 national andinternational journals in print. To promote the use of electronic databaseand full text access to the e-journals the library is also subscribes to e-journals IEEE, ASME, ASCE, ASTM, EBSCO, ELSEVIER, Springer andDELNET. In addition to this there are number of non reading materialsare available to meet the user requirements. These collections havebeen supporting the teaching, research and other professional activities.
The role of Library and Information Centers in the present era is everchanging and the traditional services have taken a new shape in the lightof developments in Information and Communication Technologies[ICTs]. Physical locations for ease of access to Library resources nolonger an issue. Now Libraries are facilitating their users with 24 x 7access using Internet Technology. Today physical use of libraries isdeclining drastically and most of the Librarians are expressing theirconcern over this development and are feeling insecure due to fall of userattendance in Libraries. This need not be the concern of Librarians.Today the users are techno-savvy and access more information than theearlier users. The libraries used to supply limited reference resources totheir users earlier, but today's users will get multiple resources on theirfingertips. Hence the concern for Librarians of these days should be toredefine the role of Libraries in reaching out the right information to theright user at a right time.
