NAIAD Project NAture Insurance value: Assessment and Demonstration

FOR PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS DEALING WITH WATER RISKS E.G.DROUGHTS OR FLOODS

-Solutions co-designed with end users: Tested, applicable, sustainable,technically sound and financially viable solutions to water risks (e.g.flood and drought risk mitigation).

-Solutions to support evidence based policy: in-line with EU strategicgoals on Adaptation Strategy, Biodiversity Strategy, development withnature, Sustainable Development Goals, Paris agreement and Sendaiframework.

-Solutions that include innovative financing and social innovation:opening novel possibilities of public-private partnerships or communityled initiatives and social innovation.

FOR PRIVATE SECTOR, INVESTORS AND INSURANCE COMPANIES

-Increasing knowledge on the role ofecosystems in the development of naturalhazards and its importance forenvironmental and socioeconomic damage.

-Viability of nature based solutions as part oftheir insurance business, responding toclimate change and changing socio-economics in light of new developmentparadigms e.g. green economy, cyclic-economy, community led development.

CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE ANDSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

-Several IT tools in support of NBS planningand implementation will be developedand/or upgraded – a key one is thedecision support and visualization tool forNBS planning.

-Deeper understanding of ecosystemdynamics and resilience to use thisdynamics to reduce the vulnerability toextreme events.

-Promotion and demonstration of novelbusiness models and insurance products.

NAIAD SummaryThe NAIAD H2020 Project aims to demonstrate the role that nature can play as an insurance system againstthe impacts from climate change.

• It will do so by operationalizing the Insurance Value of Ecosystems in 8 pilot demonstration sites (Demos)and by facilitating a collaborative process with stakeholders to develop an action plan to guide thetransition towards Natural Assurance Schemes

• Focusing on nature based solutions (NBS), we aim to demonstrate the positive value and buffer functionthat good functioning ecosystems can play to reduce water risks.

• A key element is to find innovative public procurement and financing schemes to put value on positiveenvironmental externalities to restore, protect and enhance our natural water systems.

Significance to adaptation practice, policy and business

The key contribution we aim at is to build the evidence and document the process to structure NBS projectsas financially viable , starting from real cases at different scales and at different levels of development andexpertise on nature based solutions.

Strategic goal 1 – Synthesis of knowledge; biophysical and socio-economic

-Providing an assessment framework for testing, evidence data collection and operationalizationof NBS in support of mitigation or prevention of floods and droughts.

-Combining research, secondary data collection and analysis and stakeholder participationapproach.

The goal is to deliver robust decision support tools and a collaborative planning methodology forNBS implementation.

Strategic goal 2 – Operationalization of the framework

-Testing of the framework on selected Demonstration sites.

-Fine tuning and upgrade of the decision support and planning approach, thorough stakeholderengagement and implementation experience.

-Involving businesses, financial and insurance sectors to participate in identification of novelbusiness models and financing mechanisms for NBS implementation.

The goal is to test the approach developed and improve it by testing it in real cases, while at thesame time develop novel financing schemes and business models to speed up implementationand improve their replicability.

Strategic goal 3 – Policy uptake, communication, dissemination and capacity building

-Build awareness in the public, business, insurance sector, civil society and academia on thebenefits and risk provided through NBS implementation.

-Provide targeted recommendations and guidance to exploit the potential of Natural AssuranceSchemes towards the development of resilient EU economies.

The goal is to contribute, through robust decision support systems and a truly collaborativeplanning approach to the development of viable and technically sound NBS strategies thatcontribute to the sustainability of our society .
