The Seven-Up bottling company Plc. (SBC) is a food and
beverage company, founded by a Lebanese named Mohammed
El-Khalil and started her business in Nigeria in February,1960 as
a limited liability company.
SBC is one of the largest independent manufacturer and
distributor of well-known and widely consumed brands of soft
drink in Nigeria from nine manufacturing plants.
The company has the ‘MISSION’ of refreshing the youthful
lifestyle in their consumer and the ‘VISION’ to be the most
admirable and innovative company in Nigeria and beyond.

What is titratable acidity?
Titratable Acidity is the amount or volume of
0.1N NaOH required to neutralize 100ml of
degassed sample at a pH of 8.75
Aim: To determine the amount of acid present in the beverage.
Apparatus
Magnetic stirrer
Beakers
100ml pipette
Measuring cylinder
500ml volumetric flask
Burette stand (calibrated)
Analytical weighing balance
Dropper
pH meter
Reagents
10% TPC (for cola products only)
0.1N NaOH
Beverage or controlled syrup
sample
Treated water
Degas 250ml of the controlled syrup or beverage sample as the case
may be in a measuring cylinder using the degassing system.
Pipette 100ml of the degassed sample into a beaker.
Add 2ml of 10% tri-potassium citrate (TPC) for cola products (pepsi cola,
pepsi light) only to neutralize hardness impact and prevention of HCl
that could increase the TA value.
Agitate on the magnetic stirrer while the pH meter probe is still in
contact with the sample and titrate with 0.1N NaOH.
Stop the titration at 8.75 pH reading (equivalence/end point).
Calculate the TA as:
TA = (final burette reading – initial reading) χ correction factor (NaOH)

EQUATIONS OF THE REACTION: PEPSICOLA AS A CASE STUDYWITHOUT TPC (tri-potassium citrate):
H3PO4 + 2NaOH Na2HPO4 + 2H2O 2NaH2PO4 + 3CaCl2 Ca3(PO4)2 + 4HCl + 2NaCl
Reasons: The presence of calcium at pH 8.75 causes some reactions:-With phosphate to release extra acid (HCl).-Extra acid must be titrated with more 0.1N NaOH. Adding more NaOH increases TA.WITH TPC:
H3PO4 + 2NaOH (CaCl2 + TPC) Na2HPO4 + 2H2OTPC – tri-potassium citrate (C6H5O7K3) is a masking agent used in this reaction to seize CaCl2 from interfering with phosphoric acid in which its self is not taking part in the reaction. It removes the effect of calcium i.e. no increase in TA.For other non-cola products – weak organic acids such as citric acid in 7up emerald does not react with calcium unlike the inorganic acid in cola products.
Normal intake:
Energy production (ATP).
Protein synthesis.
Acts as buffer, neutralizing acids to maintain normal pH in the blood.
Build up structural components of enzymes, hormones, hemoglobin etc.
Excessive intake:
Referred to as hyperphosphatemia.
Causes organ damage
Lowers calcium levels thereby increasing the risk of bone disease and brittle
bones.

CONCLUSION
The SIWES was fulfilled to the best of my intellectual capability
and knowledge as I was able to gain some experience by
blending the theoretical knowledge with the practical exposure
I experienced during the program.
The forthcoming IT students should make experience and not money
their primary targets in seeking IT placement because practical and
industrial experience has a way of conferring on them certain level of
confidence in their chosen profession.
I therefore recommend SEVEN-UP BOTTLING COMPANY Plc. IKEJA
PLANT as a place of industrial training for the forthcoming IT students.
