What is a rest?

• In a (4/4) we can fit 4 crotchets

• We need to have 4 crotchets in it

• But what if we don’t want to play 4 notes?

What is a rest?• A rest is a part of a bar where we don’t play a note

We can skip a note…

Types of rest• Just like crotchets, minims, and semibreves are all written differently

• Rests are written differently depending on their length

Minim rest• A small rectangle on top of the middle line

Semibreve rest• A small rectangle below the fourth line (remember we count from

the bottom!)
