NME• Masthead: The masthead of NME is short and bold and is always placed in the left

third of the front cover. This makes it more recognizable and memorable to the reader. The colours used (red, black and white) are simple, but again recognizable.

• Main image: This image is clearly linked to the main article as it overlaps other images on the page as well as the masthead, and is the biggest image on the page. The image hasn’t been edited.

• Anchorage text: The text that accompanies this image attracts potential readers. In the image, Jamie T is pictured as tired and worn out. In the anchorage text, he is described as “broken” which entices readers to find out why. The “BROKEN BRITAIN, BROKEN MAN?” is in a different colour font to the rest of the text on the page with a black background and white font. The contrasting colours attract attention to that part of the front cover.

• Flash: Using colours that follow the colour scheme, however the red background with the white text is not used anywhere else on the front cover meaning it stands out more than other parts.

• Cover lines: These are either side of the main image, explaining the other articles in the magazine that are not as important as the main article. The colours used tie into the colour scheme used (red, black and white) which match the masthead.

Kerrang• Masthead: The kerrang masthead is made using two simple colours, black and

white which go together to create contrast. It runs along the top of the front cover, however not all of it can be seen. This suggests that this particular masthead can be recognised from only seeing part of it. Also, the font used is “cracked” which suggests that the music mentioned in the magazine is loud.

• Sky line: The sky line is used on this particular front cover in order to show potential buyers what is inside this particular issue. Also, it over laps the main image which is another device to entice readers.

• Buzz words: The use of the buzz words “FREE POSTERS!” is another device used to attract the readers attention.

• Main image: This image covers part of the masthead, which shows that it is the main image. The image is dimly lit and not very colourful which suggests that the band are serious about their music and that they are of a particular music genre.

• Anchorage text: Biggest text of the page, of a simple font and colour to make it more noticeable. Outlined in black to make it stand out against the picture. Described as the “the world’s most exciting new band” is used to draw in possible readers.

• Cover lines: In a similar style to the skyline, it is used to stand out so that the readers know what to expect in the magazine.

MOJO• Masthead: The masthead for MOJO magazine for this particular issue is white in

order to create contrast between the main image. In other issues, black is used instead to contrast with the particular main image.

• Flash: Using the characteristics of a banner as it covers the top left corner of the front cover. The word “free” is a buzz word used to entice readers, also the positioning of the flash is to attract potential readers with the free CD. The colours used, black and green, fit in with the obvious colour scheme.

• Main image: Similarly to the main images of other magazine front covers, the main singer is placed on top of the masthead and the rest of the band are behind which suggests that the masthead is easily recognised by regular readers. The picture has been edited black and white, and it is quite high contrast. The band have serious expressions on their face which suggests they are serious about their music.

• Anchorage text: The colours used follow the simple colour scheme of black, green and white. However, part of the anchorage text which reads “exclusive” is put on a red background which makes it stand out against the rest of the front page and entices potential readers.

• Cover lines: Colours are again following the general colour scheme of the page. The titles of the colour line are in capitals, however the one line giving an insight to other main articles are lower case so that the title of the coverlines stand out.

Q• Masthead: The masthead of Q is consistent throughout all issues. It follows the

same colour scheme of red background with a white Q. It is easily recognised and the shortness of it makes it even more memorable for regular readers.

• Main image: The main image has not noticeably been edited. Singer of “The Killers”representing his band, shows importance by placing the photo slighty over the masthead. The pose that Brandon Flowers is doing resembles a star which links to the anchorage text.

• Anchorage text: “THE KILLERS” is in white font, which links with the colour scheme of the masthead, and the general colour scheme of the front page and contrasts with the part of the image it is placed over. The anchorage text is placed above the fold, which means when folded in half it is still visible.

• Coverlines: There are three different areas of coverlines, which use different fonts which creates a bit of diversity. Also, different font colours are used, however all the colours tie into the main colour scheme.
