NEW LITERACIES - What are they and why do we need them ?
How do we extend and if necessary redesign our existing literacy pedagogy
to accommodate the additional literacy skills needed by our students
within technologically rich classrooms
in which students will access and create multimodal digital texts
and engage in new social practices to enhance their learning?

MULTIMODAL LITERACY‘refers to MEANING MAKING that occurs through reading, viewing, understanding, responding to, producing and interacting with written text combined with other modes, particularly with screen based texts.’
‘may include listening, talking, enacting and investigating as well as reading, viewing, writing, designing and producing such texts.’
involves ‘the processing of modes such as images, words, sound, gesture and movement within texts can occur simultaneously and is often cohesive and synchronous.’

Through responding to and composing a wide range of texts and through the close study of texts, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in order to:
● communicate through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing
● use ‘language’ to shape and make meaning according to purpose, audience and context
● think in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical
● express themselves and their relationships with others and their world
● learn and reflect on their learning through their study of English
