Aerospace Photography With I n f r a r e d Film Reveals UFOs - E d i t o r ' s Note: We have w r i t t e n t h e f 'ol lowing from two long a r t i c l e s i n "The Reg i s t e r , " a d a i l y newspaper of Santa Ana, C a l i f o r n i a . The a r t i c l e s - were w r i t t e n by Robert B. Klinn and David Branch i n Los Angeles, and appeared i n t h e R e g i s t e r on Oct. 25th and Nov l s t , 1972. They were s e n t t o SKYLOOK by Prof . Emer. Char les G. K a h l e r t , of S e a l Beach, C a l i f . , and we f e e l t h i s could be one of t h e most important r e p o r t s of 1972. -----

Photographic engineer Norman F. Schu l t e r evea l ed i n Los Angeles on October 18, 1972, t h e on ly known i n f r a r e d p i c t u r e s of UFOs made by t e c h n i c a l l y q u a l i f i e d personnel . The films were taken by Schu l t e and two co-workers, Bob F o r r e s t e r and LaRue S t i l l w e l l whi le t h e t h r e e were employed i n t h e photographic engineer ing department o f North American Avia t ion ' s E l Segundo f a c i l i t y .

On t h e morning of March 5 , 1955, Schu l t e and S t i l l w e l l had decided t o photograph, from Los Angeles, atmospheric atomic t e s t s being conduct- ed a t Frenchman's F l a t , Nevada. They f e l t t h a t t h e y could o b t a i n b e t t e r . c i t y - s k y l i n e p i c t u r e s t h a n those prev ious ly publ ished and t h e y s e t up two Speed Graphic l+ X 5 cameras, w i t h Ekta r l e n s e s , on a vacant l o t i n Baldwin H i l l s . S t i l l w e l l used s t anda rd Type B f i l m . But S c h u l t e used a r e d - s e n s i t i v e Type C f i l m , Tri-X. ( T r i - X manufactured now i s a d i f f - e r e n t type of f i l m from t h a t made i n 1955.) he a l s o equipped h i s camera wi th a 25-A r e d f i l t e r , t h i n k i n g a r e d - s e n s i t i v e f i l m might record t h e bomb b l a s t more d i s t i n c t l y .

khen S t i l l w e l l came o u t o f t h e l a b wi th two p r i n t s he had j u s t pro- ce s sed , one h i s and one S h u l t e ' s , he jokingly remarked, "Hey, Norm, you've g o t a f l y i n g saucer on y o w pic ture ."

There was a very c l e a r , d i s t i n c t l i t t l e o b j e c t i n t h e middle of t h e p i c t u r e . Under a magnifying l o o p it looked even more cur ious . S t i l l w e l l blew it up about 50 d iameters and it looked even more unexplainable--and another unknown o b j e c t was found, sma l l and l i k e t h e f i rs t , dome-shaped.

This decided t h e two t o g e t i n t o t h e i n f r a r e d i n v e s t i g a t i o n of UFOs and Bob F o r r e s t e r , a l s o i n t e r e s t e d , joined them i n a s e r i e s of expe r i - ments.

The i n f r a r e d p a r t of t h e e lec t romagnet ic spectrum ( t h e e n t i r e spec t - rum be ing a l l k inds of e lec t romagnet ic r a d i a t i o n ) c o n s i s t s of i n v i s i b l e h e a t waves of va ry ing f r equenc ie s . I n v i s i b l e i n f r a r e d i s an ex t ens ion of and is cont iguous t o t h e red end of t h e v i s i b l e l i g h t spectrum.

The men knew t h a t t h e human eye can perce ive only a s m a l l f r a c t i o n of t h e e lec t romagnet ic spectrum. If UFOs could ope ra t e i n i n v i s i b l e a r e a s of t h e spectrum two puzz l ing a s g e c t s of many UFO r e p o r t s would be c l a r i f i e d ; sudden d i sappearances of t h e o b j e c t s , o f t e n desc r ibed a s "ike someone t u r n i n g o f f a l i g h t bulb," and appearances on r a d a r o f a p p a r e n t l y s o l i d t a r g e t s i n v i s i b l e t o t h e naked eye.

"We were g e t t i n g very s t r a n g e images every n igh t , " S c h u l t e says of t h e experiments. "And t h i s happened f o r about 30 consecut ive n i g h t s be fo re we d i scont inued t h e p r o j e c t . Only one o r two t imes d i d we draw a blank. I n 28 o r 29 of t h e s h o t s we had one i ~ g e s more; eve ry th ing from c r e s c e n t s t o boomerangs and ova ls . There were c i g a r , domed, and e l l i p t i c a l - s h a p e d objects- -very d i s t i n c t , very c l e a r c u t , very intenso."

"We e l imina ted a l l p o s s i b i l i t i e s o f any kind of e r r o r o r convent iona l exp lana t ion such a s fogging , chemical d e f e c t o r r e f l e c t i o n s , " S c h u l t e s t a t e s . . . We d i d a s much a n a l y t i c a l work a s we could ' on t h e photographs. We determined t h b t t h e r e was something i n t h e s k i e s over t h e a i r p o r t t h a t shou ldn ' t be t h e r e . And t h e s e o b j e c t s could no t be seen w i t h t h e naked eye. We were a l l convinced t h a t we had hotographed UFOs." P (Continued on nex t page

S c h u l t e ' s group d i scont inued i t s exper iments , which were known t o t h e 13 o r 1 4 n i g h t - s h i f t employees of t h e North American photographic eng inee r ing department. Schu l t e kept t h e i n f r a r e d nega t ive s a t h i s home. About t h r e e weeks l a t e r , i n e a r l y May, 1955, S c h u l t e was con- t a c t e d by a n Air Force o f f i c e r .

Schu l t e was d ry ing p r i n t s one evening--in a c l a s s i f i e d department-- andlooked up t o s e e t h e s t r a n g e r s i t t i n g a t h i s s o r t i n g t a b l e . Small t a l k l e d somehow t o UFOs and t h e i n f r a r e d p i c t u r e s . The man asked i f he could s e e t h e p i c t u r e s . S c h u l t e t o l d him they were a t home whereupon t h e man became very i nd ignen t and wondered why p rope r ty of North American should be a t S c h u l t e ' s home.

S c h u l t e t o l d him t h e p i c t u r e s were no t t h e p rope r ty of North American and t h e man demanded t h a t he b r i n g them i n . "About t h a t t ime , he brought ou t a m i l i t a r y o f f i c e r ' s i d e n t i f i c a t i o n card . It s a i d 'Capta in ' somebody. I d o n ' t remember h i s name, bu t t h e surname ' S c o t t 1 comes t o mind. He t o l d me he was from t h e A i r M a t e r i a l Command a t Wright-Pat terson A i r

- Force Base and t h a t he had heard about UFO p i c t u r e s made a t North Amer- i c a n , and t h a t it was h i s impress ion t hey were p rope r ty of North Amer- i c a n and t h a t he was s e n t ou t here from Ohio t o o b t a i n t h e n e g a t i v e s f o r i n y e a t i g a t i o n and a n a l y s i s , " Schu l t e s a i d .

Then it g o t t o t h e p o i n t where he was v i r t u a l l y demanding them and s a i d he was going t o c o n f i s c a t e them."

The A i r Force has claimed f o r yea r s t h a t it has never a t tempted con- f i s c a t i o n of UFO photog,raphs o r p ressured i n any way c i t i z e n s who have t aken such p i c t u r e s .

"I have t h e h i g h e s t regard f o r t h e government's s e c u r i t y system, and a l l my c l e a r a n c e s a r e s t i l l i n e f f e c t t o d a t e , " Schul te s t a t e s . UFO Observed Near Greenr idge. Mo.

Mrs. E. C. , of kansas C i t y , Mo:, wrote Ted P h i l l i p s a f t e r hea r ing him speak on a r a d i o program t h a t d u r l n g t h e summer of 1948, s h e was l i v i n g i n Greenr idge, Mo., w i th h e r paren te . While p lay ing i n t heya rd , s h e looked up a t t h e sound of plane. She saw t h e p lane and a l s o ano the r o b j e c t a t . high a l t i t u d e . It appeared t o be round and had a w h i t i s h - m e t a l l i c g l i n t i n t h e b r i g h t s u n l i g h t . I t t r a v e l e d from west t o e a s t a t a g r e a t e r speed t h a n t h a t of p l anes a t t h a t t ime. when about d i r e c t l y overhead, it made . a l ong cu rv ing t u r n t o t h e s o u t h and f i n a l l y d i sappeared from view. The g i r l c a l l e d t o he r mother who a l s o watched t h e ob j ec t .

Troy Woman Reports S i g h t i n g t o Study Group D i r e c t o r - Object Also Seen

Mrs. Erna S t i n e r , a h a i r d r e s s e r i n Troy, Mo., was on h e r way t o h e r home on Route 1, f o u r mi les from Troy, between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. Oct. 17, 1972, when she saw a b r i g h t sky o b j e c t which she was unable t o i d e n t i f y .

Mrs. S t i n e r was d r i v i n g sou th and e a s t on Highway J and no t i ced t h e b r i g h t l i g h t s h o r t l y a f t e r c ros s ing t h e r a i l r o a d t r a c k a t sou th Troy. Af t e r t h e f i r s t gl impse, t h e l i g h t was hidden behind t r e e s and wasn't s een a g a i n f o r ano ther mile when Mrs. S t i n e r t u rned e a s t on Highway U. It wes a mis ty n i g h t wi th no s t a r s v i s i b l e , and t h e r e had been r a i n e a r l i e r .

The b r i g h t l i g h t , remaining a t t h e same e l e v a t i o n and appa ren t ly t h r e e mi les d i s t a n t was t r a v e l i n g t o t h e n o r t h e a s t . It appeared t o have t h r e e o r f o u r b r i l l i a n t whi te l i g h t s w i th a s o f t glow about each. The weather c o n d i t i o n s could have accounted f o r t h e "glowR Mrs. S t i n e r thought .

A s h e r husband wasn' t home a t t h e t ime , Mrs. S t i n e r drove on p a s t h e r home t o h e r p a r e n t s ' home a s h o r t d i s t a n c e n o r t h ; and she , w i t h M r . and Mrs. Ern ie Buenemann, s tood on t h e f r o n t porch, f a c i n g e a s t and watched t h e o b j e c t f o r s e v e r a l minuter . During t h i s time t h e i i g h t s went completely out and then came on aga in twice. Then t h e o b j e c t suddenly took on speed and was ou t of s i g h t i n seconds. Because some farm machinery was i n ope ra t ion , no o t h e r sound could be de t ec t ed .

Unexpected co r robora t ion of t h e s i g h t i n g came when Mrs. S t i n e r c a l l e d John Schuess l e r , D i r e c t o r of t h e S t . Louis Study %oup of G r e a t e r S t . Louis, a t h i s home i n OtFa l lon , K O . , t o r e p o r t t h e i n - c iden t .

M r s . Schuess le r was s t and ing by t h e k i t chen window a t 7:30 t h a t evening ( b e i n g s u r e of t h e t ime because of a TV program j u s t coming on) and saw an unusual l i g h t approaching from t h e west. It f l ew d i r e c t l y over t h e house a t low a l t i t u d e , bu t t h e r e was no sound of an a i r c r a f t o r t h e u s u a l v i b r a t i o n i n t h e bu i ld ing when a plane f l i e s over.

Mrs. Schuess l e r r e p o r t s t h e o b j e c t was l a r g e and moving r lowly and s h e saw a row of f o u r l i g h t s , a l l white. ---------- Research Bal loon Lands; Seen Over 4 S t a t e s

David Wazny, 29, a General Motors employee a t t h e Saginaw, Michigan, foundry, was d r i v i n g t o work, west on Highway M-81, s h o r t l y a f t e r f i v e o ' c l o c k EST, t h e morning of October 2, 1971, when he saw a b r i g h t l i g h t over t h e highway about one mi l e ahead. The a rea was r o l l i n g , a p s r e e l y populated farm land wi th no l a k e s o r marshes i n t h e v i c i n i t y . S t e r n were v i s i b l e i n t h e p a r t l y cloudy pre-dawn sky. There was l i t t l e t r a f f i c - - on ly two c a r s were seen i n an approximate 12-minute period.

Mr. Wazny was d r i v i n g 55-60 mph and had j u s t c r e s t e d a h i l l a t t h e i n t e r s e c t i o n of Hinson and M-81 when he first saw t h e l i g h t which was making a sweeping motion a c r o s s t h e road, t r a v e l i n g perhaps 300-600 yards each s i d e of t h e highway. A t maintamed a l e v e l path w i t h t h e except ion of one d i p when t h e w i tnes s was s t i l l t r a v e l i n g toward it. It dipped toward t h e ground on one of t h e swings n o r t h o f t h e highway, but came back almost immediately t o i t s o r i g i n a l l e v e l .

A s he drove towbrd t h e l i g h t , he expected t o f i n d a convent iona l ex- p lana t ion . A t t h a t t ime t h e l i g h t was desc r ibed a s b r i g h t and whi te , bu t d i d n o t h u r t h i s eyes. A s he came c l o s e r , t h e l i g h t seemed l e m b r i l l i a n t and appeered t o pu l sa t e . When he reached t h e s p o t where t h e l i g h t was hover ing over t h e road, he stopped h i s t r u c k i n t h e westbound l a n e and looked up a t t h e l i g h t through t h e windshield . He t h e n decided t o s t e p o u t and opened t h e t r u c k door and glanced down a6 he s tepped t o t h e ground. On looking up aga in , he saw t h e o b j e c t had swung around 110-130 deg rees from almost d i r e c t l y overhead t o a p o s i t i o n about 1/3 o f a mi le away t o t h e s o u t h sou teas t . A s he s tood watching f o r s e v e r a l minutes, a Chevy Gamer0 passed h i s t r u c k , s lowly , bu t n o t s topping .

Wanxy t h e n decided t o move h i s t r u c k t o t h e shoulder o f t h e road and d i d so. Soon a f t e r an A&P d e l i v e r y t r u c k approached from t h e west. Wanzy t r i e d t o f l a g down t h e t r u c k , bu t t h e d r i v e r d i d no t s top . The o b j e c t cont inued t o hover and he watched it a few more minutes , then g o t i n t o h i s t r u c k and proceeded wes t , d r i v i n g s l d y and watching t h e l i g h t s . Af t e r he had t r a v e l e d f o r about a h a l f mi l e , t h e l i g h t suddenly a c c e l e r - a t e d towards t h e sou th and was ou t of s i g h t w i t h i n a s h o r t time.

Wanzy drove on f o r s e v e r a l miles and stopped and c a l l e d t h e Tuscola County S h e r i f f ' s department. A c a r was s e n t t o t h e scene bu t was unable t o l o c a t e anyth ing unusual. The fo l lowing day Wanzy r e tu rned t o t h e S h e r i f f department t o a s s u r e them he was no t c razy and t o f i n d ou t i f t hey had d i scovered anything.

When in te rv iewed by Robert L. S t i n son , Wanzy s a i d he was shook up by t h e s i g h t i n g and would l i k e t o have some exp lana t ion f o r what he had seen. Having se rved i n t h e Army t h r e e yea r s , he was s u r e t h e o b j e c t was no t a h e l i c o p t e r o r any convent ional a i r c r a f t .

He desc r ibed t h e o b j e c t a s diamond o r ki te-shaped with rounded p o i n t s w i t h a b r i g h t , p u l s a t i n g white li h t about 2/3 of t h e way up from t h e 8 h y p o t h e t i c a l base , and centered. h i s l i g h t was framed by a V-shaped

r i d g e of red-orange l i g h t s ( e s t i n r t e d 10-20) which glowed o r shimmered a s i f t h r u a haze. 'here was no n o i s e , no c o n t r a i l o r smoke and no hM e f f e c t s . H i s rough e s t i m a t e s e t t h e o b j e c t a s 100-170 f e e t wide and probably two o r t h r e e t imes a s long.

There was a b r i g h t moon and t h e s k i e s were c l e a r .

"It s t a r t e d o u t w i t h one w h i t e l i g h t , f l a s h i n g o f f and on. Then r e d and w h i t e l i g h t s appea red t o j o i n them, t h e n back o f f . They moved v e r y f a s t and t h e n v e r y s low and a t one p o i n t t h e y were d i r e c t l y o v e r t h e c a r , " Ray s a i d .

A t one p o i n t , t h e l i g h t s t u r n e d from d a r k t o l i g h t r e d , w i t h a f l a s h - i n g s t r o b e - t y p e l i g h t i n t h e middle . Once, t h e l i g h t s seemed t o t a k e on a t u b u l a r s h a p e , b u t a t a n o t h e r t i m e , i n t h e l i g h t o f t h e moon, he cou ld make o u t a round s h a p e w i t h a dome i n t h e middle ," Ray s a i d .

P o r t e r added , "They d i d n ' t make a sound b u t moved around p r e t t y f a s t . They r e v o l v e d i n wide c i r c l e s a l l a round t h e sky and we watched them f o r a b o u t 3 0 m i n u t e s a l t o g e t h e r . "

It f l ew around f o r about t h r e e minutes and t h e n began a slow d e s c e n t , changing then t o a very i n t e n s e r ed l i g h t . A l a b o r a t o r y examination has proved t h a t t h e p r i n t s a r e r ad io - a c t i v e , and t h e f a c t t h a t they a r e weak - a f a i r d i s t a n c e beyond t h e n o i s e l i m i t - is due t o t h e t ime passed from t h e p r i n t s were made, till they were measured.

A week be fo re t h e p r i n t s were d i s cove red , enormous d i s tu rbances occurred on t h e TV-casts t o aangsund, whereas t h e TV s t a t i o n a t Namsos, placed f a r t h e r away, d i d n o t n o t i c e anything.

Mrs. Monka Swanson, of C l i v e , A lbe r t a , Canada, w r i t e s Ye Ed t h a t s h e and h e r husband were s t a y i n g 9 mi les west of M l l l e t , A lbe r t a , i n August of 1969. Between 1 0 and e leven o ' c lock on a cloudy n igh t wi th l i g h t r a i n , Mrs. Swanson glanced ou t t h e window and saw a " b r i g h t glowing whi te l i g h t about tiie s i z e of a very l a r g e yard l i g h t hanging above a wooded a r e a t o t h e sou th of t h e house." The l i g h t h o v e r e d . f o r two o r t h r e e minutes above t h e t r e e s , a mi le from t h e house, t h e n suddenly vanished.

Colorado Nomen Report UFO Followed Car

A woman, who asked no t t o be i d e n t i f i e d , 2nd h e r f r i e n d whom s h e i d e n t i f i e d only a s Donna, s a i d a " f l y i n g saucernappesred over t h e i r c a r a s t h e y were r e t u r n i n g t o Longmont, Lolo. , from Denver, e a r l y Sunday morning.

She s a i d t h e y s p o t t e d t h e o b j e c t --''it was l i k e a b r i g h t l i g h t w i t h an tennas on i tn - -about two mi les sou th of Del Camino on 1-25. It s t a y e d above t h e i r c a r when they e x i t e d o n Colorado 119 and followed them i n t o Longmont, s h e s a i d . When t h e y a r r i v e d home i n t h e no r the rn p a r t of t h e c i t y , it was s t i l l above them.

The woman s a i d t hey saw t h e o b j e c t whi le t hey were bo th i n s i d e and o u t s i d e of t h e c a r and t h a t it was "about a mi le o r twon i n t h e a i r . The young women became f r i g h t e n e d by t h e presence of t h e o b j e c t and went t o t h e Longmont p o l i c e s t a t i o n . O f f i c e r s "pooh-poohedw t h e s i g h t i n g , . she s a i d , and o f f e r ed t h e op in ion t h a t it was t h e North S t a r .

But t h e woman s a i d she was convinced t h a t it was no t a s t a r , t h a t it moved and changed course i n d i r e c t i o n and speed. A check i n d i c a t e d no a i r c r a f t were r e p o r t e d i n t h e a r e a a t t h e t t ime and t h e speed of t h e moving l i g h t s would e l i m i n a t e t h e p o s s i b l i t y o f t h e "over lap" b e i n g A i r F o r c e f i g h t e r s r e f u e l i n g .

Anderson, Ind i ana , May 16, 1971. Four w i tnes se s obeerved an o b j e c t a f t e r e l e c t r i c a l power f a i l e d i n t h e i r home. High-pitched sound heard dogs r e a c t e d . Object passed around a sycamore t r e e and d i sappeared a t a p o i n t nea r a creek. The sound could be heard f o r an a d d i t i o n a l 20 minutes , animals were q u i t e f r i g h t e n e d and t h e t e lephone was dead. A l a r g e t r e e , which it had passed and had budded i n t h e normal manner i n t h e s p r i n g , suddenly d ied a f t e r t h e s i g h t i n g .

Argent ine Jan. 8, 1971. Two fa rmers observed a m e t a l l i c d i s c a s it landed. $hey could s e e two antenna and a w h i s t l i n g sound was heard. Object was 10 f e e t i n d iamete r , 3.5 f e e t t h i c k . Pas tu re was burned and a s e c t i o n of a lemon p l a n t a t i o n was d r i e d up.

PUZZLE I N THE SKY OVER SOFIA

Yes te rday ' s n i g h t f a l l (November 2 1 s t ) brought something very unus- u a l t o t h e day t o day l i v i n g of our C a p i t a l ' s c i t i z e n s .

The sun wes j u s t s e t t i n g behind t h e Lyul in Mountain. Curious people had ga the red i n groups i n t h e s t r e e t s and squa re s watching an enormous luminous o b j e c t h igh above t h e c i t y , almost b t t h e zen i th . With t h e naked eye , it was e a s i l y s e e n , bu t i t s shape was d i f f i c u l t t o d e f i n o wi thout t h e a i d of b i n o c u l a r s o r a t e l e scope .

According t o t h e eye-witnesses accounts , when it was f i r s t n o t i c e d it a p p e ~ r e d a s a luminous sphere much l a r g e r t han t h e s u n ' s d i s c and l a t e r appeared a s a shape s i m i l a r t o a t r apezo id . The g e n e r a l i n t e r e s t ;

about t h i s appearence was brought on by t h e f a c t t h a t t h e o b j e c t appear- ed t o f l y s lowly i n a . d e f i n i t e predetermined d i r e c t i o n . Desp i te t h i s s lowness , t h e obse rve r s could no t e a s i l y d e s c r i b e i t s shape.

It remained s t i t i o n a r y a s if suspended above t h e c i t y f o r some t ime and had t h e c o l o r of t h e f lame of an oxygen welding to r ch .

F i f t e e n minutes l a t e r , through t h e eyep iece of t h e "Lunetan t e l e s - cope which was a t t h e d i s p o s a l of t h e workers a t t h e newspaper "TrudR ( m a g n i f i c a t i o n 40x1 t h i s o b j e c t had t h e appearance of a n open parachute nea r t h e hor izon of t h e darken ing sky. I t s upper s e c t i o n formed a com- p l e t e , f l a t d i s c e n c i r c l e d by a l a r g e , c l e a r band of l i g h t .

A t t h e t i r . e of t h i s obse rva t ion t h e t e l e s c o p e read 25 t o 30 degrees above t h e hor izon.

I n i t s upper s e c t i o n where was a da rk d i s c around which a s t r a n g e h a l o was formed, which gave o f f a b r i g h t g reen phosphorescent b r i g h t - ne s s and appeared t o have g l i t t e r i n g edges. One could s e e d i s t i n c t l y how t h i s "perachute" suddenly began t o s h i n e w i th a s i l v e r i s h - b l u e l i g h t which q u i c k l y changed t a k i n g on an orange co lo r . Before it completely d i sappeared from view it appesred a s a sma l l da rk orange o r r e d s p o t of l i g h t moving away t o t h e s o u t h e a s t horizon.

The o b j e c t i n ques t i on was photographed s t 5:10 p.m. by t h e r epo r t ed - photographer f o r t h e "TrudW newspsper, Luben Donov. It wss a l s o photo- graphed by ano the r c i t i z e n of S o f i a . An engineer by t h e name of C h i r s t o :

Immediately s f t e r t h i s s i g h t i n g t h e e d i t o r s of "Trudn c a l l e d t h e I n s - t i t u t e of Hydrogology and Meteorology and t a l k e d wi th one of t h e r e sea rch - e r s t h e r e . Mr. Dimiter Simetchiev, who observed t h i s e x t r a o r d i n a r y phenofiena h i m s e l f , t o l d Chem: The appearance of t h i s b r i g h t f l y i n g ob- j e c t above S o f i a is c e r t a i n l y e x t r a o r d l n ~ r y and i n t e r e s t i n g . I was ob- s e r v i n g t h i s f l y i n g o b j e c t wi th t h e naked eye and f o r t h a t reason I can no t g i v e you any exhaus t ive informat ion. A t t h i s moment, i t i s p rac t - i c a l l y imposs ib le t o i d e n t i f y t h i s ob j ec t . However, we have e s t a b l i s h e d a very important po in t . Th i s o b j e c t , whatever it was, was f l y i n g com- p l e t e l y a g a i n s t t h e wind c u r r e n t , which can have only one meaning. That i s , it must h ~ v e had its own power source . Our a t t e n t i o n was e q u a l l y a t t r a c t e d by a second p e c u l i e r i t y . Another expe r t a t t h e Academy of Sc ience of Bulgar ia was con tac ted . This was P r o f e s s o r Bogomil hovatchev, S e c r e t a r y of t h e Bulgar ian Astro- nomical S o c i e t y , who s a i d : "This o b j e c t was a t an a l t i t u t e of t h i r t y k i l ome te r s (18 m i l e s ) . Above a l l , I would l i k e t o emphasize t h a t t h e UFO observed above our c a p i t a l was a b s o l u t e l y no t an a r t i f i c i a l e a r t h s a t e l l i t e . A t t imes t h i s myster ious o b j e c t t r a v e l l e d much f a s t e r t h a n a Spu tn ik and t h e l i g h t it emi t t ed was much t o o b r i g h t f o r a s a t e l l i t e . Bes ides t h i s , we know p e r f e c t l y w e l l a l l t h e s a t e l l i t e s which o r b i t around our p l a n e t . We observe t h e i r o r b i t s and we keep t r a c k of them a t a l l t imes . It is a known f a c t t h a t t h e s e a r t i f i c a l s a t e l l i t e s a r e b a r e l y v i s i b l e because tiley t r a v e l a t such g r e s t a l t i t u d e s and a s I p r e v i o u s l y s t a t e d , t h i s o b j e c t observed over our c a p i t a l was a t a n a l t - i t u d e of only t h i r t y k i l ome te r s above t h e s u r f a c e of t h e e a r t h . The c o l o r changes of i t s r ad i ance could p o s s i b l y be exp la ined by t h e e f f e c t of t h e s e t t i n g sun."

L a s t l y . D r . F e l i x Y. Z i g e l , a p ro fe s so r c t t h e Moscow Avia t ion In s - t i t u t e was asked, t o conmen< on t h i s appearance above So f i a . Th i s was h i s conunent t o t h e BTA: "The o b j e c t mentioned i n t h e Bulgar ian newspapere is a t y p i c a l r e p r d s e n t a t i v e of what a r e c a l l e d UFO 's , t h a t i s , Uni- d e n t i f i e d F ly ing Objec t s . There a r e many such obse rva t ions of t h i s k ind, even i n ou r country. Observa t ions of d i s c s a s w e l l e s o t h e r forms, i n p a r t i c u l a r o b j e c t s which have t h e appearance of c r o s s e s . There a r e many puzz l ing p o i n t s about t h e behavior a n d - t h e n a t u r e of t h e s e o b j e c t s .

wUnfor tuns te ly , t h e obse rva t ions of UFO's wi th t h e a i d of t e l e s c o p e s and cameras do no t occur t o o o f t e n . One could s a y t h a t t h e case a t hand, t h e Bulgar ian s p e c i a l i s t was very lucky. More t h a n once, UFO's have been l o c a t e d by r a d a r , but no one y e t h a s succeeded i n o b t a i n i n g t h e spectrum of t h e UFO phenomena, which would beyond a doubt shed some l i g h t on t h e i r t r u e o r i in."

On November 24 th , 19 % 7 t h e p u b l i c a t i o n "Narodna Mladezhw i n S o f i a s t a t e d t h s t t h i s o b j e c t observed on November 21s t was "a ba l l oon , most probably a meteoro log ica l balloon." How t h e y a r r i v e d a t t h i s conc lus ion was no t s t a t e d . It was s imply s t a t e d t h a t t h i s i s what it was. A s imple s t a t emen t f o r t h e s imple minded, but 1 would guess t h a t most o f t h e people t h a t wi tnessed t h i s obse rva t ion d i d no t accep t t h a t conc lus ion and a r e probably s t i l l wondering toway what t hey observed t h a t November 21, 1967 over S o f i a .

However, I b e l i e v e t hey a r e important enough t o be recorded f o r p o s s i b l e f u t u r e value .

Ju ly 9 , 1967 - Koman l i v i n g i n Wzshington, D. C. r epo r t ed a low f l y - i n g UFO which n e a r l y ranmed h e r house. She s a i d t h e o b j e c t f l ew on a h o r i z o n t a l course , j u s t ba re ly miss ing h e r house and t h e chimney of h e r ne ighbor ' s house. The o b j e c t t hen s h o t o f f i n t o t h e d i s t a n c e . Time: Between sundown and midnight. Durat,ion: l e s s t han a minute.

1969 - Three men saw a high f l y i n g UFO from a shopping c e n t e r park- i n g l o t i n t h e Fresh Pond s e c t i o n of Cambridge, Mass. They s a i d t h a t t h e o b j e c t looked l i k e a sh iny shoo t ing s t a r b u t t h e UFb s topped , moved sideways, s topped aka in and then s h o t s t r a i g h t up and disappeered.

J u l y o r August 1957 - Dozens of w i tnes se s i n Chaumont, France, saw a t r i angu la r - shaped UFO f l y i n g [email protected] overhead. According t o one of t h e o r i g i n a l w i t n e s s e s , Joseph Boucher, t h e o b j e c t was observed sometime between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Hc s a i d t h s t t h e o b j e c t brought a t t e n t i o n t o i t s e l f by a h igh w h i s t l i n g sound emi t ted a s it was f l y i n g over . The UFO was a t a very g r e a t a l t i t u d e and f l y i n g very f a s t i n a s t r a i g h t l i n e . A l t h o u ~ h t h e o b j e c t was a t h igh a l t i t u d e , t h e w i tnes se s could d i s c e r n t h e shape a s t h e t of a p e r f e c t e q u i l a t e r a l t r i a n g l e . Durat ion of t h e s i g h t i n g was 20 t o 25 seconds. A t one p o i n t t h e o b j e c t wes about 100 ya rds away and she compered t h e UFO t o t h e moon, only tw ice a s big. August 1972 - Two young e.irls i n t h e i r e a r l y t e e n s were a t Rober ts F i e l d i n Dorches te r , Mass., one n i g h t d u r i n g August. A t about 9:30 p.m. t h e y were s t ~ r t l e d by t h e appeerence of a b r i g h t , whi te g lobe low over Dorehes te r High School.
