Department of Mechanical Engineering
About our Institute and the Department
The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore was established in
the year 1946 on the threshold of India’s independence. It is one of the premier
educational institutions in India, offering 8 undergraduate, 11 post graduate and
Doctoral programmes in engineering and technology.
The NIE is an autonomous institute affiliated to Visvesvaraya
Technological University (VTU), Karnataka. It has the distinction of having
among its alumni personalities in high positions, academicians, successful
researchers, industrialists, entrepreneur and leaders of world renown with their
contributions to the development and economic prosperity of our country. The
department has highly qualified faculty, with strong research background.
The Institute emphasizes on bridging gap between academics and industry
through development of centres of excellence in several areas of engineering
field with the support of industry partners and relevant state of the art facilities.
Presently NIE has 14 centers of excellence.
NIE has started M-Tech program in “Industrial Automation and
Robotics”, in the year 2011 which is an interdisciplinary course. This course is
designed to inculcate knowledge and skills to meet the demands of Automation
industries. The institute is in the process of establishing “Centre for Automation
Technology” (CAT) to support students and surrounding industries to develop
skills in the field of Automation Technology.

Introduction of M.Tech-Industrial Automation & Robotics
Programme
Industrial Automation is the process of following sequence of operations with
little or no human labour using specialized equipment and the devices that perform
and control manufacturing processes. It is the science that deals with designing,
creation and maintenance of robots which includes electronics, mechanical and
computer science engineering whose blend is called Automation & Robotics.
Opportunities
Career opportunities can open up in many an area ranging from automated appliances construction,
automobile industry, building materials industry environmental engineering, traffic management &
maintenance, medical engineering field, power and process industries, project engineering houses,
system integration houses, real time software development, communication software development etc.
The following are a few distinct career opportunities which open up on successful completion of this
curriculum.

Objectives of M.Tech (IAR) Programme
To produce quality engineers with multidisciplinary skills to cater the
needs of automation industry.
To provide the students with opportunities to work on on-going
research and consultancy projects.
To provide practical exposure to the students in state of the art
hardware, software and teaching aid.
Course Outline:
Degree: M.Tech. In Industrial Automation & Robotics (IAR), Autonomous under
VTU, Belgaum.
Duration: Two Years, Full time (4 Semesters, last semester is for Project work)
Total number of Seats: 18 seats.
Eligibility Criteria:

Automobile Engineering, Industrial Engineering Management, Electrical & Electronics,
Electronics & Communication, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science
Engineering, or related branches.
Scope and Career Opportunities:
The scope of Industrial Automation is very wide which will lead to higher degrees
of centralization. Now Automation is used in each and every company where machines
are involved and some or other process is involved. It is done through PLC, SCADA,
HMI, DRIVES etc. Chances of getting placed after this course are higher. The
following are a few distinct career opportunities which open up on successful
completion of this curriculum.

The NIE is in the process of establishing “Centre for Automation
Technology” (CAT) to support students and surrounding industries to develop
skills in the field of Automation Technology. Also, this centre has been identified
as one of the competency development centre by consortium. NIE has already
signed MoUs with the below mentioned companies for starting CAT.
MOUs Companies:
Bosch Rexroth
• Fanuc India
• Siemens
• Festo Controls
• Felsomat India
• Schunk
• Pepperl and Fuchs
NIE is one the prestigious college selected by the consortium to develop
competency development center in the field of automation. This will enable the M.Tech
(IAR) students of NIE to get exposure by directly linking with industry experts &obtain
the guidance in their course and project areas. Association is in the phase of
standardizing curriculum. NIE has been identified as “Competency Development
Centre” (CDC) with the mandate to facilitate Campus Connect Programs andprovide
world class education in the field. This initiative has been taken, keeping in view the
need of Indian Manufacturing Segments growth.
NIE is in the process of developing Centre for Automation Technology
(CAT) with funding to the tune of Rs. 4crore. This initiative has been kick started with
funding by TEQIP –II, FIST-DST, KCTU,& KBITS Govt. of Karnataka
The facilities planned under CAT are:
PLC & SCADA Laboratory
Sensorics Laboratory
Robotics Studio
Drives & Controls Laboratory
FMS Laboratory
Software Laboratory
Facilitates Planned under Robotics Research Centre with the funding support
from KCTU are Articulated Robotic plat form, Robotic studio, and other necessary
software’s to build light weight through able robots for defense / security. e-vidya for
teaching learning and vaidya for old age support and medical areas.
The Main four pillars of CAT (Centre for Automation Technology) are shown in
the figure below
Collaboration with Foreign Universities
NIE has signed co-operative agreement with leading foreign universities, namely,
University of McMaster, Canada; OelWerme Institut (OWI), affiliated to
University of Aachen, Germany; and University of Kassel, Germany. These
collaborations provide opportunities for IAR students to take up academic visits
and higher studies in these universities.
Following students from M.Tech-IAR who visited Germany between 2011-14.
Following students from M.Tech-IAR who will be visiting Germany during
November 2015.
NIE VISION
