MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION CONTRIBUTORS

Hey everybody, we’re back. And when I say we, I mean we. That includes all of our current readers, plus a whole bunch of new readers, plus me. You add it all up, and we get we. And yes, I took a short break for a while; and no, I didn’t lose my mind during the process. The season is back, and so am I, so let’s get to it.

2009 is going to be an exciting year. In addition to all that, Engle Printing and Publishing is along for the ride as the backbone of our paper. They have the horsepower to provide the printing and distribution, while we have the pizzazz to pull the rest together. After all, if it wasn’t for you guys, we wouldn’t exist, and that’s why I say we.

For 2009, we will continue to provide the same great racing coverage you had all become accustomed to for both District 6 and the MDRA. New for this year, our friends from the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association (MAMA) and AMA District 7 will join us in our quest to provide the best amateur regional race coverage available.

Watch for racing action from all of the

great series in our area. After all, many of you already participate in a number of different events. Why not bring it all into one publication where you can have all the info you need right at your fingertips. Watch for race coverage, event schedules, point standings and the like -- everything you were used to seeing, plus more.

In addition, keep an eye on our website, where you can check our photo page each and every week. There you can log on to your favorite photographer’s website to view and purchase your event images. Please remember that my personal web address has changed; you can check that out at www.jimbullphoto.com.

While online, make sure you check out our Swap Shop link. You can now take advantage of the power of classified advertising in MRA for an affordable price. Where else can you reach thousands of racers each month with the stuff you’re looking to buy or sell?

Yeah, 2009 is gonna be great. By the time you are reading this, the season will be in full swing, and there are a ton of great racing opportunities out there no matter what your discipline. Check out our “Where to race in 2009” feature in this issue. You’ll find all the major series listed from around the region. Whether you do it on two wheels or four, there is something there for everybody. Another new feature this year will be our “President’s Corner,” where you can keep up to date with the issues in your preferred series.

As always, we are on the lookout for good contributions to MRA and racer feedback as well. If you have a suggestion on how to make things better, our ears are always open. We look forward to the new season, and we’ll see you at the races. - Jim Bull

In late January 2009, the District 6 Sports Association celebrated their 2008 champions at the 47th Annual Awards Banquet in Grantville, PA. Close to 300 participants came out from the Dirt Track, Hare Scrambles, Trials and Road Riding clubs to socialize, enjoy a buffet dinner and recognize this year’s winners.

As is the norm, Past D6 President and newly appointed AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley was the master of ceremonies for the evening. The night started off with a social hour, followed by dinner, then the award presentation. Local vendors displayed their new wares for the crowd throughout the event.

Special awards were given to the National Champions that D6 always seems to produce, followed by the Dustin Flock Trials Award and the President’s Award. This year’s President’s honors went to Parts Unlimited representative Mike Ego for his devotion and commitment to the sport. Mike is always a huge part of the sponsorships and free giveaways that go to the riders each and every year. Also, watch for Mike’s daughter Megan out at many of the area’s Hare Scrambles events. Megan will be supplying coverage for MRA again this year, as well as offering her photos for sale.

After the winners received their trophies, the celebrating began with dancing and wrapped up with more socializing. Congrats to all of the racers, and may your 2009 season be just as prosperous.

A new era has begun. For 30+ years, the official

publication of District 7 was Cycling East. The District Board voted on March 11, 2009, to make Motorcycle Racing Action its official monthly

paper. It was a long and heart-wrenching decision

to change such a historic and legendary newspaper. The

history of its founders, Dorothy and Stan Miles, will never be forgotten; their son, Chip, taking over after their passing. The board’s decision was to retain the spirit from which Cycling East was born. We feel that the dedication MRA’s writing staff and publication brought to the table will best represent that of Stan and Dorothy’s vision. This paper now becomes the largest and best regional news publication on the East Coast. The benefits will be toward all riders in all disciplines, from two-wheeled to four-wheeled events. Motocross, dirt track, hare scrambles, enduro, and trials will now have one paper to represent all facets. All promoters, clubs, dealers, and contingency sponsors can now have one advertising vehicle to focus on for connecting with their marketing needs.

With the new paper, we hope to launch a new look to our website. Plans are in the works to upgrade the site and make it more user-friendly and the information easily accessible. With this new site, we will include our monthly board meeting minutes and District Supplemental Rules. These items used to be included in our monthly newspaper, but the board feels we can be more current with the information if we utilize our website. All forms and applications will also continue to be on the website. Keep checking back to the district website at www.amadistrict7.com to see the new look unfold. If you don’t have access to the district website and need some information that would be found there, please contact me at 410-344-9106, and I will help you with whatever you need.

As we said last month, the paper will be delivered to one person per address. This was initiated last year, as many families didn’t see the need to have multiple copies at the same residence. If you wish to have multiple copies of the paper, please contact Hilly Bell at [email protected] and let her know the name(s) to add to the mailing list.

All cards have been mailed out as the applications have come into the district post office box. If you have mailed in an application or signed up at the track and have not received a card, it could be for a couple of reasons. You might owe the membership chairperson a notarized application. ALL RIDERS UNDER THE AGE of 18 MUST have an application signed by BOTH parents and have those signatures notarized. Another reason for no card may be that your application did not have complete information (you may not have indicated your class(es) or indicated your date of birth). In either event, you should have been notified by e-mail or through a postcard in the mail. To get a card, you will need to take care of these matters. If you have questions, please contact Hilly Bell at 410-343-1721 or [email protected].

The motocross riders have benefited from all of the local series sponsors. We have MAMA bucks, MDRA bucks, Gold Series moto tokens, and Ultimate series contingency sponsors. All of these series have year-end awards that only add to the weekly contingency programs that the sponsors offer. All of these series help you, the rider, benefit from the sport. This year in dirt track, there will be a series within a series to bring extra sponsors and money into the series. Baer Promotions and BCTRA are lining up series sponsors to pay additional funds to overall winners within both series this year. All of these promoters are trying to grow the sport for the future. Please check their websites for details.

We hope you enjoy this inaugural issue of District 7 news within Motorcycle Racing Action. We are happy to be in this alliance with the writers and staff of MRA. These writers eat, sleep, and breathe the sport just as we the racers do. We look forward to a long and healthy relationship in the year to come. So, let’s get back to the garage and prepare for this week’s race. Keep your feet on the pegs, go fast, and take chances.

- Wayne Sody

Hey all Racers,Spring is finally here, and

racing is in full swing. I’d like to start by announcing that the MDRA has once again joined forces with MRA to bring you the best race coverage available for our series. Watch your mailboxes each and every month for your reserved copy delivered right to your home.

The first round of the MDRA Series is in the books. The 780 participants that came out on the weekend for the mud race at Budds Creek had a great jump-start on the points for the year-end awards. If you missed the first round, you can still come and race with the fastest racers in the area on April 25 and 26 at Tomahawk MX in West Virginia.

This is your chance to race in the best series with the greatest riders. The MDRA series is run by racing families with over 50 years of combined motocross racing experience. MDRA gives away over $27,000 in cash and prizes, $200,000 in factory contingencies, gas cards and free race passes at every round. All of our classes are competitive, with novice classes for beginner racers. You won’t find any politics in the MDRA Series, and we treat all riders equal. We only go to top-notch tracks, with set fees to protect the riders in these tough economic times.

If you race the MDRA Series, you may also have the opportunity to help us defend the 2009 Title of the Suzuki Triple Crown Shootout between MDRA, Ultimate MX and PAMX series.

With all this being said, why wouldn’t you race in a series such as the MDRA? Come and join the best series with the best racers in the Northeast at www.MDRAMxracing.com, or call 717-249-6036.

MAMA Members,

It’s that time again, the start of another exciting season. The board has been hard at work during the off-season preparing. Some things that may be of interest to our members are included in this letter.

We have reduced membership fees to $25 each. This does not include D7 membership, as it was determined that we should give our members the option as to what district to join. Additional class cards are $5 each. Overall, there is a significant reduction from the 2008 membership fee. In the tough economic situation, the board is keenly aware of the need to reduce costs and will continue to look at other ways to help our members.

One of the exciting ways we are doing that is a 100% payout for all A class riders in 250 and Open classes. This is a chance for our riders to earn additional money. Payout began at the first race at Budds Creek. Entry into these classes is $40 per rider. Stay tuned for more details.

This should be another exciting year of racing and friendship, so let’s get ready to have some fun.

Please make sure you are aware of the proper class in which you should be riding. Riders are responsible for entering the proper class. Advancements at the end of the 2008 season are posted to the Web site. As with last year, we will be using the RPV (Rider Performance Value) system to determine advancement eligibility. The RPV value has changed from 2008. Now, any rider with an RPV or higher and six races completed will advance to the next higher class. This does not apply to our 250 class.

- Don Logan, President Middle Atlantic Motocross Association

President’s CornerDear fellow motocrosser-

This is why we choose to motocross. In the northeast part of the United States where District 6 Motocross exists, it’s the time of the year when the excitement of the new racing season bursts forth faster than the flowers in our gardens and the leaves on the trees. The northern motocross rider in District 6, after fixing up his old bike and gear or getting a new model, anxiously watches and observes the ground to see how much frost is left at his favorite riding spot. The farther south you go, the frost either didn’t exist or lifts earlier, enabling the motocross rider to start practicing sooner.

This is why we choose to motocross. From the last race of the District 6 racing season to the first race of the new season, the District 6 Motocross track promoters and clubs start working on their facilities, scheduling, sponsors and many other parts that make the new motocross season what it will become. The District 6 MX Promoters Group and its volunteers have put together another ten-race Ultimate Motocross Series that is second to none in the nation. In and around this series at the D-6 motocross facilities there are weekend motocross races for bikes and quads that are sponsored by some of the finest manufacturers and dealerships in the country.

This is why we choose to motocross. The challenge and excitement of the sport of motocross racing once again go hand in hand. From its inception in this country in the late 1960s to its present-day formats of Supercross, Outdoor Nationals, Arena Cross and local D-6 motocross competition, motocross can once again be truly called “America’s total family sport.” Motocross competition involves the commitment of many people. Traveling, bike preparation, overnight accommodations and the many activities surrounding race day bring families of all sizes together for the common goal: Give that MX event the best shot that we can.

This is why we choose to motocross. Two basic elements come to the surface here - the rider and the bike. The rider needs to be in shape, and we all know that takes hard work. The bike needs to be competitive and stay competitive, and we all know that takes hard work and money. Each and every day we go to work and make money for motocross racing because it is high in our priorities of life. The present economic situations and political arenas don’t dictate how we set this priority amongst the others because without motocross in our lives, a big part would be missing.

This is why we choose to motocross. The sounds of motocross racing and all of the activity surrounding the motocross race exemplify the true sounds of freedom that we have here in the good ole USA. This is provided by the men and women in our armed services. They wake up to a different sound, and it’s because they put their lives on the line that our freedom of choice continues.

This is why we choose to motocross.

See you at the races,

George W. DenkePresident, District 6 Motocross Promoters Group

Hello this is your track chaplain, Zachary A. Camp # 7. I hope you caught last month’s article. I talked about how we see ourselves as racers - either as winners or losers - and about how our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ sees us. Let me remind you that if you confess your sin to Jesus, He promises to forgive you (1 John 1:9). So if you have confessed, Jesus sees you as a winner on and off the track. He has a good plan and purpose for you every day.

Easter is coming upon us very

soon, which means warm weather and lots of riding on that beautifully plush spring soil. I don’t know about you, but motocross has given me a love for plush, dark, moist, soil crunching under my front tire in a fast turn. Easter is also the time set aside to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Let’s take a look back in history when Jesus was put on a cross. The Bible says that God the Father sent His only Son to this earth to live a perfect life. Jesus was all human and yet still God while down here on earth.

Over 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ

walked this earth preaching the Gospel and healing people. He said things like, “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth in him, may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:38-40 KJV)

Everyone who hears the true story of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection and believes it can have life forever in Heaven. In my own words, the story goes something like this:

“Jesus lived free from sin. He did not even think a wrong thought; he went around preaching the good news and healed people. Many of the Jewish leaders thought he was a fake and did not like him. Those people were called Pharisees and Sadducees. They had him tried and sentenced to die on a cross, which was part of God’s plan. After being beaten by a whip 39 times, which tore the flesh off of His body, He then

had to carry His cross to the top of a hill. Not once did he curse them or say a mean thing to anyone the entire time. Once at the top of the hill, they took large spikes the size of the axle bolt on your bike and nailed each arm and each foot to this cross. They then dropped it with a jolt into an upright position. This was all part of God’s plan. You see, Jesus died a physical death and a spiritual death, with all the sin in the world - including yours -dying with him. He took the punishment you and I deserved for sinning against God. Now if you are thinking you have not sinned against God, ask yourself if you have ever lied, stolen, disobeyed your parents, or lusted. If so, you have sinned, and we all need a forgiver.

On that day Jesus died, the exciting part is that he did not stay dead. They put Jesus into a tomb and sealed it shut and placed a guard in front of the tomb. In three days he came back to life. Imagine

if you put your broken old dirt bike with a locked up motor into a shed, locked it, and put two armed guards at the door, then somehow it gets out and you see someone riding it around. Sound impossible? Jesus had won the race against death. He is the victor. He is the only person to come back from the dead and stay alive forever since that day.

He died so that you don’t have to. If you believe that story is true and that Jesus is the only way you can be forgiven and win over death, then you don’t have to go to hell, which is eternal pain or eternal death. If you give your life to Jesus in prayer just like He gave you His life on a cross, you can pass from this life into a life of peace in heaven where there is only good when you die. Your body will die, but your soul will not ever experience death, because Jesus did that already for all who will call upon Him for forgiveness. Romans 10:13: “For whosoever shall call upon

the name of the Lord shall be saved.” That is, saved from sin, death, and hell.

You see, I am able to enjoy the spring season having the peace that if I die today I will instantly go to be with Jesus in heaven where it is always like spring with only joy, hope, and newness of life. I hope this Easter you will take the time to make Jesus the (Lord) or team manager of your life; put him in charge of your future and tell Him that you’re sorry for the wrong things that you have done in your past. I promise, you will not regret it. It is your choice: forever peace or forever pain. Choose peace today; choose Jesus.

See you at the track, Zachary A. Camp

Harrisburg, PA (2/22/09) The 31st annual Motorama Indoor Races and Show returned to the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex Saturday, Feb. 21, and Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009. The two-day show saw a record-setting attendance at the 30-acre enclosed ground complex, which featured Arenacross racing, Tunerwar Import Car Show, Quarter Midget racing, Go-Kart racing, Robot Conflict, Remote Control Competition, an Elite Rod and Custom Show, a Spina Bifida Charity Auction, and the Ms. Motorama Pageant.

The Saturday-only showing of the Tunerwar Import Car Show brought wall-to-wall spectators to the Expo Hall, as 220 modern vehicles were on display and in NCCA competition. A Free Cycle Live Show, F4 Challenge Car Show, Bikini Contest, Anti-Team Motorcycle Stunt Team, an appearance by BMX master and

U.S. Trials champion Mike Steidley, and a live concert featuring Planeside and The Mercurial kept fans busy for hours.

Although entries in the Arenacross were slightly down, the number of spectators filing into the large arena provided a packed house, filling the 7,000 seats and remaining standing room. Nearly 400 bikes and four wheelers competed in the

Arenacross racing on Saturday night, with a similar number the following day. A total of nearly 800 bikes and four wheelers competed at the 31st annual Motorama Show.

Clown favorite Bobby Cox was

back in the large arena for the two-day show as well, bringing laughter to all with the many stunts and games performed during the Motocross intermissions. To date, the folks from Motorama events have raised over $200,000 for their Spina Bifada charity, and founding promoter Armen Hostetter thanked his personnel and the attending crowd for making it all possible. Foundation 529 was also on hand raising money for their organization to help put the best possible safety equipment on today’s youth riders.

In racing action, as mentioned earlier, the entries were slightly down, but the action was, as ever, intense. The four wheel Open B groups kicked off the event with Michael Kowal from Gap, PA, grabbing 2009’s first main event win on Saturday. Things kept moving as the youth 85cc (12-15) class came to the gate. Young Ryan Clites from Huntington, PA, won the division on both days of racing. Classes were held for both two and four wheelers throughout the weekend, with racers from 4 years old to probably 40-plus. Several racers grabbed multiple wins at this year’s show. Please check the results here to see how your favorite racer did.

There were some new and some returning to Motorama; it seemed that everyone had a blast. The racing culminated late Sunday afternoon with Dylan Tremellen from Conestoga, PA, taking his second win of the weekend to close out the 2009 show.

I’m sorry if you missed it; it’s

always a thrill. You can check out our photos from the weekend at www.jimbullphoto.com and be sure to browse the Motorama site at www.motoramaevents.com.

2009 Motorama ATV Recap

What a weekend for ATV racing! We had brand-new machines never seen before on a racetrack, new riders, seasoned riders with new sponsors, and a new “C” class, but the same great racing action as always at the 31st annual Motorama at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa. A few changes to the track from the previous year made for some very exiting battles.

Michael Kowal on the #53 Honda making his triumphant return back the arena taking the Open “B” class wins in his qualifier and in the main, followed closely by Lee Dickerson and Kieth Appleby. Tyler Dommel making the jump to the 450cc class after dominating the 200/300cc youth class for the past few seasons took the win on Sunday.

The Youth 50 Stock LTD 4-8 overall when to Hunter Dentler, chased by Steven Schonerg and Kyle Frick On Sunday, Frick on his #117 wouldn’t be denied, taking a commanding win over Bryor Barto. The Youth 90cc CVT Prod. saw a very fast Travis Wotring taking the win on Saturday, but on Sunday a broken chain would

make his chance for sweeping the class come to a screeching halt. Capitalizing was the 95y of Tyler Young out of Delta, Pa.

The addition of the “C” class for the ATVs was added this year to spread out the entries. In years past, The “B” class would have 60+ in the Prod. and 45+ in the Open. Chris Hoffman took the inaugural win on Saturday, and Kenny Frey from Boomboro, Md., won on Sunday. Jason Dunkleburger won back-to-back both nights in the “A” classes on his new Golden West Cycles Yamaha YFZ450R. Brian Ace, Tommy Fink, Kale Witmer, and Bryan Wilhelm didn’t make it easy for Dunk, consistently hitting all the jumps and blitzing the whoop section. Dylan Tremellen on his East Coast ATV back 300ex really showed how ATVs can fly by airing out the big double in the middle of the arena and by winning both Saturday and Sunday by huge margins.

Now that the excitement of Motorama has concluded, most of the motocrossers look forward to the outdoor season and the start of the District 6 Ultimate Series, which kicks off on April 5th at Evansville MX Park.

This year’s Motorama Hotshot is a young man from Carlisle, PA, with very deep roots in motocross racing in our area. His dad and his uncle have many years of both racing and race promoting experience under their belts. Chase Yentzer of Doublin Gap Motocross Park has stepped up and gotten the job done this year.

Like Chase, I remember the day not too long ago when he entered his first race at his home track on that little Kawasaki 50. Although he

finished last that day, he has kept his nose down and has learned in a very short time how to be a champion. I saw Chase move from the green bike to a blue bike, then to an orange bike and finally to the Cobra - all the while improving his skills and having fun.

In only a season and a half, Chase went from being 9th out of 9 to taking track champion at his home track in 2008. This winter, he and his father traveled countless miles to Florida on the weekends to participate in their winter series, and the results have shown.

Chase came to Motorama ’09 determined to do well. He raced two classes as usual and had extraordinary results. When the gate dropped on his first heat race of the weekend, he was on the gas and found himself qualified in the second position for the main event that night. In fact, Chase placed second in both his heat races on Saturday while grabbing both main event wins Saturday night. When the announcer asked Chase that night, “How’d you make that thing go so fast?” Chase replied, to the crowd’s delight, “I just pinned it.”

Chase awoke Sunday morning and, like so many of us right now, found he had a touch of the flu. Not to be discouraged, he still competed. His dad, Rod, explained that Chase wasn’t feeling 100% all weekend, and he believed it had finally caught up to him.

Needless to say, Chase went out and “pinned it” again, this time ending up with four second-place finishes for the day.

As in the past, I was actually looking for a hotshot who won all of their mains this year; however, in my eyes, anyone that can go from 9th out of 9 to winning the mains at Motorama in a year and a half and capping it off with a couple of seconds while riding under-the-weather certainly deserves to be a hotshot in anybody’s book.

Congratulations, Chase, on your accomplishments. We wish you and your family the best, and we’re betting there will be many great championships ahead.

Blue Diamond Park was your host for Round 1 of the District 7 Gold Series sponsored by Moose Racing. I’ve been attending motocross races for many years, and you just never know what to expect this time of the season. Case in point: A mere week prior to the event, seven inches of snow fell on the Blue Diamond track. In talking with track manager Alan Decarlo days before the race, he said, “It’s going to take some work, but we’re going to be ready.” Pleasantly, I awoke to warm temperatures on Sunday morning as I headed off to the track thinking, “This is going to be a great day for racing in March.”

The crew at Blue Diamond did a fantastic job preparing their course for the day’s event. If it weren’t for a few patches of snow scattered around the facility, you would have never known it even happened. In talking to several racers, they said that they had to actually water the track at the practice day on Saturday before the event. The track was in great shape for the close to 300 riders that attended this year’s opening round.

The 250 A and B riders opened up the day with a split gate for six laps around the course. To some, this was good news, but for others the pre-season rust definitely seemed to be a factor. In the end, it would be Eric Balawejder going 2-1 for the expert win, with Cameron Siegal sweeping the amateur division.

Next up would be your 85cc classes with Coty Schock from Dover, Del., winning the (9-11) age group by a convincing fashion, with Cody Burgoyne taking the (12-15) win. Schock would also go on to sweep the Junior Mini division as well.

Other two class winners on the day included T.J. Irvin winning Open A and College Boy, Mark Ondy winning 35 and 40 Plus B, and Sean Kelly grabbing the wins in both School Boy and Supermini.

Other great battles on the day were found in the Open B division as well as in the 50cc group. Check all the results here in MRA to see how your favorite racer fared, and be sure to log on to www.jimbullphoto.com to view images from all of today’s classes.

Check elsewhere here in MRA to see coverage from Round 2 of the Gold Series at Delmarva Motorsports Park, then gear up and head down to Budds Creek on April 19th for the SMDRA sponsored Round 3.

“That’s the way I saw it.”By Jim Mucklin

Did the rain hold off? Oh yeah, perfect race day. First race of the year for me, and I got to see some of the faces from Motorama. Let’s get right to it.

In the A’s, Schmelyn, Clark, Sidle and Savidge. Schmelyn, fresh off a couple of wins at Motorama, with Clark right on him, had the track dialed in. Savidge, despite a couple of big hole shots aboard his new Pine Grove Yamaha, couldn’t hold them off. Sidle looks stronger each time I see him, especially in the corners; I wouldn’t want to be on the outside next to him -- line picked, he’s gone. I’m sure there’s a couple of B guys glad that these two guys moved up to A.

On to B: Walker, with two wins, made it look easy; he’s got that rhythm section down. Riden and Yingling looked strong. In the C’s, Sharley had a big hole shot, but Brown put a big pass in the second corner. Here are two guys that made the move to big bikes look easy. But can anyone catch King and Minnich? Both were super smooth for the day out front, making it look like practice.

In the 50’s, the battle continued with Yentzer and Brodbeck. If you missed these two at Motorama, you missed some good racing, passing, and lead changes; the crowd loved it. For me, it’s nice to see the friendship that develops between the 50’s riders. They tell you that they are having fun, but when the gate drops they all have that checkered flag look in their eyes. Keck and Tressler, now there are two with a handful of throttle.

In the 65’s, Hunnington and Luhovey were the ones to watch. Now KTM and KAW should come watch this. I thought it was super-mini; these guys are putting it down. I hope I get to see more of these two guys this year. It’s gonna be good.

On the 85’s, Clites (who smoked ’em at Motorama) and Emory put on the race of the day. They were so focused. It’s a good thing

they didn’t look back; they would have seen that #5 of Rivera.

“The way I saw it.”

By Jim Mucklin

As I pulled out for my ride out the pike to Pagoda and the fog lifted, the sky didn’t look good, but, by the time I hit 422, the ground was dry. I’m always amazed at the track - powder on the edge, nice and tacky in the middle. Great track conditions.

Let’s get right to it: Race of the day was 250 A. Mikolaichik and Hougentogler get the first turn, but there was no holding back Kramer and Sidle. I stood with Angelo and watched Sidle try to set him up for the pass a couple of times. Of course, I was in the wrong place to get pictures, but the race was on, fender to fender, two different lines, and Kramer held him off for the win. I spoke with them both after the race, and it was nice to see the sportsmanship shown by these two guys on and off the track.

I couldn’t help but notice how the rider on 517 rode like Alex Gaul, and the 32x rode like Eric Sebastian. Wait, it was them! I didn’t get a chance to talk to them, but they were there. Welcome back. Speaking of Sebastian, Tom showed how it’s done in the 45+ class.

I really tried to take some photos, but there was a lot of great racing in all the classes - guys in the second and third position battling it out. This was no follow-the-leader, my friend. Brajkovich and Savidge come to mind. I saw R i t c h i e

Kastle go down, I turned around, and by the end of the back section he was up to third and trying to pass two at the same time.

Over in the minis, Mr. Emory looked faster each lap. Richard and Vertucci were right there. In the 65’s, Thompson aboard his KTM was giving a riding lesson on how to do the step up; he dropped the hammer and never looked back. Great ride.

Were there any C riders? Just two full gates for a total of 56. King and Brown on the Suzukis continued out front; Cook on the green machine was in there too.

Thanks to all who came out and to the staff and crew at Pagoda for the great day of racing.

Race 2 of the District 7 Gold Series was held at Delmarva Motorsports Park (DMP) in

Seaford, Del., Sunday, March 15th. With temperatures hovering in the mid 40s and a light steady drizzle that carried on throughout the day, 319 riders registered for the event. Although wet and cold, the day was a success. The riders who stayed in the front of the pack still had one or two tear-offs left on their goggles at the end of the race, while those less fortunate ran out a few laps in, and many shed their goggles in a last-ditch effort to see.

Quad riders took the brunt of the mud and were covered head to toe, along with their numbers, making it difficult to distinguish who was who at

times. It s h o w s

true racing spirit and

love of the sport for those

who ventured out on a wet and cold weekend to give it their all. There were plenty of spills in the turns and a few on

the landings as riders lost traction and made some spectacular saves. Some were less fortunate and took some hard hits, but most jumped back up and continued on without even losing a position.

Some of the top riders of the day were Joseph Elliot, #152, who took first in all of his motos for the day in both Quad 30+ and Quad A. Coty Schock, #119, took a total of four motos, two each in Junior Mini 7-11 and

85 9-11. Jay Rassa, #736, took home all races in 35+A and Vet 30+A, while Wayne Bevins #318 took first in Vet 30+B and 35+ Amateur.

Maynard Miller, #448, took both motos in the 25+ class along with Shane Desell, #71, in 65 7-9; Jacob Lewis, #97, in 65 10-11; and Donovan Ivory, #7, in 51cc Sr. 7-8. Colton Bailey, #52, placed first in both 250A, while Steven Davis, #65, took both in 250B. Douglas Wentzell, #810, won both of the 50+ motos, and Cody Burgoyne, #111, won both in 85 12-15.

Thanks again to all the riders, family and friends that came out to support their

favorites, flaggers, EMTs, and the staff of DMP and District 7 for making the day a success. The next D7 Gold Series is a SMDRA race that will be held April 19th at Budds Creek.

GreenOn a typical day, like most students, I feel my classes tend to drag along. I have been trying to improve my outlook of class time by trying to apply the information to my everyday life. I had taken a sociology class in the fall semester, where we spent a significant amount of time on the aspects of culture. Yes, every single person is a part of a culture, but I have noticed a more specific culture that we have created in the motocross world. Those involved in motocross can most likely relate to some things that have stood out to me. Some traits of culture that I have noticed are language, values, symbols and beliefs/rituals.

Values are one of the most important pieces of culture. A value is something that really matters to a person. Much like modern society, most people involved in motocross value being successful in this sport - maybe not a monetary success, but one based on winning races and having talent. America’s three main values are equality, freedom and justice, though in our world, motocross racers may value other things like having nice bikes and gear.

Similar to having values is having morals. Morals are not forced; they’re by choice. In

motocross, we have morals such as not passing on a yellow flag in a race. Most all racers have the morals to race clean. The moral of having a family atmosphere is such a wonderful thing that not many cultures possess what we are so lucky to have. One last thing: I would like to compliment our sport’s moral that the security in the pits is unbelievable!

To be a culture, the group must also process their own language. Though some in this sport may speak a different language, we all use words that are unique to us in their meanings. I have listed just a few, with their definitions attached. Next time you are talking with all your track buddies, see if you can pick out some of these words and some others!

Symbolism is also a very strong element to a culture. A symbol is something that is meaningful to a specific culture, and when introduced to another may be totally unfamiliar. Think of some symbols that are associated with our sport. Logos companies have symbols. Other examples may be the flags in a race and the colors each factory has for its bikes. What I mean by the colors is this: when a person unfamiliar with motocross would see a yellow bike, they would

have no idea it is a Suzuki. Beliefs and rituals can be

grouped together, in the sense that you believe in certain things and may have rituals based upon them. Typically, it is a ritual to have races on Sundays (though sometimes not all are). The ritual of having practice on the track is another. We may have certain beliefs like ‘having a set of unlucky gear’ (meaning that it is gear you believe you crash when wearing). Other beliefs and rituals may be your routine of getting dressed, giving your dad/mechanic a high-five on the line, or anything that you do on a regular basis.

After analyzing how unique our motocross culture is, I have found that I have a deeper appreciation for our sport. This is just one way that I found to apply my educational experiences to motocross. Something that may be interesting for each and every one of us is to examine on our own cultures changing over time. If you think back to when you were introduced to the sport, think of just how much it has changed! It’s amazing! Simply start looking at the style of motorcycle, gear, riding techniques, and professional riders! Until next time, that’s something to keep you thinking!

By Chris Borger, District 7 Enduro Chairman

The 72nd annual Sandy Lane Enduro was held Sunday, March 15, by the Meteor Motorcycle Club in Green Bank, NJ, beginning the season for the ECEA and the District 7 Enduro Series. The Sandy Lane Enduro is the oldest Enduro event in the country, started by MMC some 72 years ago.

The event began when, on a cool Sunday morning back in 1934, Frank Bolton and the Davidson brothers were out in the woods on their Harleys and decided to lay out an Enduro that went from Camden, NJ, to the Jersey shore and back. The course ran 225 miles and started at midnight. Little did they know that the seed they were about to plant would become one of America’s greatest off-road racing traditions.

This year’s event was not your typical Sandy Lane of recent years. The event was much more challenging, with more technical trail sections and an all-time keeping format without the start controls of the past. The course was approximately 72 ground miles of great single track trail, fire cuts, some sand roads, and some short sections of public road in some of the transfer sections. The event is held in the Pine Barrens area of south Jersey, mainly in the Wharton State Forest area. The terrain is

sandy loam soil, sand, and some sections of deep sugar sand with the occasional section of whoops. The weather conditions were damp and cold, with temperatures in the mid 30s at start time and barely making 40 by the afternoon with light rain and drizzle.

The Meteor Club puts a huge effort into this event, working countless hours on the trails, and this year recycling older trails that had not been used in many years. Meteor’s trail boss Keith Mahon did a fantastic job laying out the course and placing the check points. MMC prides itself on having one of the best Enduro events in the country, and, as always, the course was awesome and everybody had a great time. There was an incredible 585 riders at the event, the most the club has had in several years, making nearly 120 rows for the event.

Competition was tough at this year’s Sandy Lane, with very close scores in most of the classes.

Eight-time National Enduro champion Michael Lafferty was the overall grand champion of the event, dropping only 17 points on the day. Mike blazed the course at a fierce pace and had a stellar performance. Two weeks earlier, Mike took an unusual fifth place in the AMA National Enduro Series season opener in Wedgefield, SC.

Congratulations to Michael Lafferty for his outstanding win at the 2009 Sandy Lane Enduro!

In other action, ECEA fast guy Wally Palmer was second overall, posting a score just seconds behind Lafferty. Dane Schonberg was third overall, dropping 19 points, and ECEA hero and icon Rich Lafferty came in fourth, dropping 20 points. Fifth place overall went to Andrew Tsakanikas. Andrew missed the fourth-place position by one second and rode a strong, steady pace all day. Sixth place overall went to fourth-ranked national rider Jeff Melic of Ohio; seventh went to Andrew Delong; eighth place went to Enduro racing legend Jack Lafferty Jr.; ninth place was ECEA regular Doug Allen Jr., and 10th place overall went to Jeff Pasqua. Indeed, the fastest and most talented riders on the East Coast came out for this event, and the Meteor Club provided the perfect format for their competition.

In other classes, high point A went to Kevin Sooy; high point B went to Michael Thorsonp; and high point C went to David Henninger. The Masters class was won by local hero and Enduro icon Jack Lafferty Sr., and the Golden Masters class was won by Charlie Stapleford. Charlie was the overall grand champion of the event back in 1977 and has been

an Enduro champion of several classes for over four decades. At age 71, he still posts scores that are impressive in any class, and he is a huge asset to the sport.

The Woman’s class was won by Courtney Compton. This young lady can fly through the woods, and she was followed by her mom, Merle, who came in second in the Woman’s class. The Compton family are longtime supporters of the ECEA and the District 7 series.

The South Jersey Enduro Riders Club took first place in the Teams competition and posted a great score.

All in all, the event was given very high marks by the riders, with reports of great trail, great food, excellent organization, and quick scoring for the 585 riders.

For complete Sandy Lane Enduro results, go to the ECEA Web site. District 7 Enduro Series points standings can be found at the D-7 site, www.amadistrict7.com. Check out the D-7 site for more information about Enduro competition, the 2009 schedule, and how to join in on the fun and excitement of the District 7 Trophy Series.

Special thanks to all the fine folks at the Meteor Motorcycle Club for providing another awesome day of racing, including club president Mike Reighn, trail boss Keith Mohan, and Brett Mutchler. On a final note, special thanks to our AMA District 7 Enduro Series sponsors, Shenandoah Honda, Bob’s BMW, Matto Cycle and Moose Racing Equipment, for their ongoing support of the series.

Mike Lafferty wins Sandy Lane!

RACINGS591454

Welcome to the Mudd at Budds. The 2009 MDRA Race Series headed to Budds Creek for the first time in its four-year series history. It was a homecoming for many of the racers of the MDRA, myself included. It had been a few years since I’ve traveled south to this, one of the most famous racetracks in the country. Budds Creek

climbed on the international stage last season as they hosted the MX of Nations right here in the good ole’ US of A. I was looking forward to getting back to Budds; I had just hoped that I wouldn’t have needed my hip boots.

Needless to say, the racers came, and so did the weather. On Saturday, March 14, the MDRA kicked off their

new season with a practice day under dry skies. For most of the day, the racers were treated to a dry racing surface, but toward the final practice sessions of the day

the skies opened, and the rain began to fall. It rained steadily overnight, and the weather hung around for race day on Sunday.

Not to be discouraged, the racers came to race.

The sign-ups were good. First off was the 250 A and B divisions coming out of the top starting gate. Patrick Wastler led everyone into the first turn, and he never looked back. In talking with Jonathan Beasley, he had wanted to use the lower start that was installed last year for the MX of Nations, but the weather just simply was not going to allow it.

The day moved on, and there were several two-class winners on the day. Please check the results here to see how your favorite racer scored. The 50cc machines had the toughest time; they either didn’t get enough of a combination of weight and traction to navigate the steep hills at Budds or they just simply got sucked into a mud hole. The track crew did the best they could with the conditions that were thrown at them.

After the first set of motos concluded, Beasley pulled the racers back to sign up and conducted a vote to see who wanted to continue. With

more heavy rain forecasted to move in, the majority decided they had enough, and the day was put into the books. The 250 C group got a second chance to determine the contingency outcome, and

the A guys were paid based on double moto scores. At that point, it was a wrap. Everyone got to play in the mud a little and then got to go home to regroup for the next one.

Again, check the results here and log on to www.jimbullphoto.com to view all of the day’s muddy race images.

I would like to start by officially welcoming the racers and families of the MAMA organization to MRA. We will be covering many of your races this year, as well as keeping you abreast to all the happenings in our region through both our newspaper and website. Please watch each month for your copy of MRA in the mail and tune in weekly to our website, where we will feature race images, rider profiles, race schedules and more. We look forward to representing your club this season. Please feel free to send us any comments or suggestions through our contact page on our website.

Round 1 of the 2009 MAMA Race Series kicked off the weekend of March 21-22, 2009, at the world famous Budds Creek racing facility, also the home track for the MAMA organization. The weather was perfect for motocross for the over 500 riders that came out to participate in the opener that was sponsored by JT Motorsports and Kenda Tires.

The MAMA organization serves all classes of racers, with an emphasis on youth classes. The organization runs a two-day format at all of their events, starting with a practice day on Saturday, combined with some of their adult and senior classes. Sunday starts off with again more practice, followed by racing in all the youth, novice, amateur and expert divisions.

Round 1 kicked off the day with all of the 80cc divisions, which are broken down by both age and experience levels. The 80cc A and B groups took to the track first, followed by the beginning C classes. Austin Simpson would be your first main event winner of the day in the 80cc (12-15) A division, with Nathan Card winning the B group. In the younger (9-11) classes, Cameron Dowell would win the A class, while Shane Desell took home the win in the B class. The C class racing is always exciting, offering the biggest turnouts of the day; check the results here to see the winners.

Up next came the Open divisions, with the A and B

groups splitting the gate. The MAMA group has offered an invitation to all the expert racers out there to come and try their program to see how you do racing against their racers. It would be exciting to watch, although some of the best racing came today in the amateur divisions. Brock Richards would be the man winning both 250 and Open B.

I can see why the youth emphasis is so strong with this group. The 50cc racers then hit the track, and they owned it for quite a while. The gates kept dropping, and the 50s kept coming. Again, check the results here to see how your favorite racer fared, both youth and adult alike. Please also check our website at www.mcracingaction.com to view event photos from the day.

MAMA has two events in April starting the first weekend of the month at Delmarva Motorsports Park in Seaford, Del., then again back at Budds Creek the weekend of April 25th -26th.
