St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Acragar.
Annual Cemetery Mass this Sunday (July 30th) at 3.00pm.
Many thanks to the Cemetery Committee and all who have been working hard in preparation for
Sunday’s mass.
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. This week’s readings lead us to reflect on the priceless treasures of wisdom, faith, and the Kingdom of Heaven itself. In the First Reading, Solomon does not ask for great honours or luxury goods, but simply for a discerning heart so that he can govern his people wisely. God willingly grants his request. Today's Gospel illustrates what the Kingdom of Heaven is like, using four short parables to help us reflect and understand what the Lord offers us. This week, then, we might want to spend some time considering God’s great gifts to us of faith and wisdom. How do they help us bring about the Reign of God for the people around me, especially for those who are searching for the Lord?
Reek Sunday, July 30th. Ireland’s Holy Mountain
Croagh Patrick, (c.2,510ft/765m) Ireland’s holy mountain, dominates the landscape of south-west Mayo both spiritually and physically. The Croagh Patrick pilgrimage is associated with
St Patrick who, in 441, spent 40 days and nights fasting on the summit, following the example of Christ and Moses. The name
‘Reek Sunday’ comes from Patrick’s ability to Christianise many pagan customs including
the festival of Lughnasa, which previously had heralded the start of the harvest festival
honouring the ancient pagan god Lugh, whose name is encompassed in the Irish word for
August: Lughnasa. This festival’s tradition be-came absorbed into the new Christian beliefs and locally become known as Domhnach na
Cruaiche (Reek Sunday).
"We are always on the side of life" - Speaking recently about the protection of
life, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said, "Being pro-life means that we are always on
the side of life and life in its fullness. It means that we fight to avoid the emptiness of so many visions of our society and that
we continually remember that we ourselves need conversion to Christ who is light and life. As believers in Jesus who is life and
light, we must be in the forefront in doing what we can so that everyone can flourish in his or her own life. We are convinced of
the value of every human life from the moment of conception until the moment
of natural death."
