rick
ow do you choose an architect or interior designer?
When you think about it, you’re asking this person to take on
a very personal task. You’re asking him or her to create your
home, that one place that reflects you—who you are, what
you love, the way you choose to spend your time. It’s funny
that we so often hire someone else to take on such a personal
endeavor. Maybe that’s why it’s so magical when the person we
choose creates a space that is so “us” in every way.
So how do you find that person? Sure, you can create a list
of questions a mile long—and get great answers to them all—
and gather piles of references and recommendations, but when
it comes down to it, isn’t it really a gut feeling?
I’ve looked at thousands of homes over the years, and while
I’ve seen many designs I’ve loved, there are a special few that stand out in my mind;
places where I can imagine living every day. It wasn’t just the setting or the finishes or
furnishings that appealed to me. It was something less tangible. I felt that if I were to
meet the architect or designer who created the space, he or she would really “get”
me—and my idea of home.
It seems that I’m not alone. For the past five years, we’ve published an annual list
of Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers, and every year we hear from many of
you who visit the website of each and every firm on that list. You pore over thousands
of photos until you find that architect or interior designer whose work speaks to you.
And that’s the person you hire.
In this issue, we’re proud to present the fifth edition of Top Mountain Architects &
Interior Designers, our exclusive guide to the design pros we’ve featured in the pages
of Mountain Living over the years—as well as those whose work we know and admire.
But this issue is about more than a list. It’s about celebrating all of the design pro-
fessionals who have taken the time to really understand us; to get at what makes us
tick, give it form and bring it to life. It’s magic, indeed.
Best wishes,

A MOUNTAIN LIVING SPECIAL SECTION
KELLY & STONE ARCHITECTS, INC.
GET TO KNOW KELLY & STONE ARCHITECTS, INC.
CLIENTS COME TO YOU FOR... Our talent and expertise in the realm of sustainable, sculptural commercial and residential design, as well as our undying commitment to providing impeccable service.
YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS... To create responsible, sculptural and inspirational design even after utility, budget, building code and site restraints have exerted their influences.
YOUR STYLE IS INFLUENCED BY... Our climate. Designing custom homes and commercial projects in the mountains of the West presents several design challenges that influence our work. We are also committed to using materials that can be expressed in their natural form, including stone, glass, steel and timber.
THE MOST INSPIRING THING YOU’VE SEEN LATELY IS... A short profile on the work of Peter Bohlin, a profoundly talented architect who has really influenced our work.
EVERY HOME MUST HAVE... A sense of place. This not-so-tangible component of a successful design is paramount to good architecture.
SHARE WITH US ONE OF YOUR GO-TO DESIGN RESOURCES. We often specify products by Montrose, Colorado-based Recla Metals for roofing and siding. They carry a variety of corrugated-steel and weathered galvanized products.
MAKE A DESIGN PREDICTION. As resources become increasingly scarce and more expensive, I predict that our clientele will be moving in the direction of smaller, higher quality, more sustainable projects.

Each CE DUR tile is made using a mold from actual cedar shake, so it has all the texture, edging, thickness and color of real wood.
CE DUR has color-through pigmentation, meaning it permeates all the way through the shake instead of just being applied to the surface like some roofing products. A new CE DUR roof will actually age to the correct color within a few weeks of installation and then remain colorfast over its lifetime. CE DUR is available in a wide variety of realistic natural wood colors and can be blended to create a roof unique to your home.
CE DUR’s aesthetic qualities are so impressive, your neighbors may suspect that you chose real wood shake.

THANK YOU
MOUNTAIN LIVING SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION 15
COMMITTEE LETTERFROM THE SUMMIT COUNTY BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
The Summit County Builders Association is pleased to welcome
you to the 16th annual Summit County Parade of Homes.
While the difficult economy has created challenges across the
globe, our mountain region continues to stand strong and move
forward. This year’s Parade features a greater variety of housing
options, including multi-family dwellings, remodels, net-zero-
energy homes, budget-conscious construction and yes, some
over-the-top residences as well.
All proceeds from the Parade’s ticket sales benefit The Sum-
mit Foundation, a community organization that provides ongo-
ing support to local organizations, nonprofits and programs.
Each ticket sale enables the organization to continue its support
of vital community endeavors, and we appreciate your contribu-
tions to this great community supporter.
Tickets for this year’s event will be sold at the City Markets in
Breckenridge and Dillon, and tickets may be traded in for wrist
bands at any of the homes on the tour.
We owe a very special thanks to our sponsors, including our
Diamond Sponsor, Breckenridge Building Center. Corporate
sponsors include Mountain Comfort Furnishings, Bank of the
West and RJB Development. Their generosity goes a long way
toward making this event possible.
Finally, a sincere thank you goes out to all the Parade Com-
mittee members whose time, effort and ideas have made this a
great event. We hope you enjoy this year’s Parade of Homes!

SILVERTHORNE
DESCRIPTION
Apex Mountain Homes, Inc. is proud to show-case what it hopes will be Silverthorne’s first Net Zero Energy custom home. Situated in Angler Mountain Ranch, this home was designed by Boulder, Colorado-based architect David A. Beal, a leader in Colorado’s sustainable building movement. Before you come visit, Apex Moun-tain Homes wishes to advise you that this home is “Rated G.” Here, “G” stands for Green Built: Sustainable for All Residents!
The building features and techniques imple-mented here by Apex Mountain Homes are a synergistic combination of low-tech, old-fash-ioned common sense and cutting-edge green technologies designed to reduce the home’s carbon footprint. The home functions as a com-plete system, encompassing everything from the food grown on site to the energy conserved and the message of resource stewardship it sends to future generations.
Features include an attached Mediterranean-climate greenhouse and earth-sheltered garage roof garden for growing food. An 8.1-kW solar system generates electricity for the home and the owners’ 100-percent electric car. Energy usage was further reduced by installing hanging racks in the laundry room instead of a clothes dryer. The home’s design is centered around its primary heat source: a Tulikivi solid-fuel masonry heater, which is the first of its kind to be ap-proved in Silverthorne.
This home redefines sustainable building and custom home comfort, two features formerly
presumed to be mutually exclusive. Apex Moun-tain Homes’ president Clark Johnson felt so strongly about these green-building practices that he decided to lead by example and build this home for his family. Apex Mountain Homes looks forward to teaching you more about this home during the Parade.

With a modest footprint at less than 3,000
square feet and eco-friendly elements, this home
is attentive to sustainable practices. Low-VOC
finishes are used throughout the home, includ-
ing American Clay on the walls in place of
typical sheetrock compounds and paint. Newer
construction methods are also used, including
insulated concrete forms made by Arxx, which
greatly enhance the insulation value of the below-
grade living area; Warmboard Radiant Subfloor, a
low-mass alternative to Gypcrete; and insulation
that includes a closed-cell, spray-in application in
the roof system and a blown-in application in the
walls. These new insulation products perform well
in an alpine environment and create a home with
minimal air leakage and high-insulation properties.
Salvaged and reclaimed materials—T&G from
an old cabin and 80-year-old pine that has been
reclaimed and milled for flooring and trim—add
character to the home.
The outdoor living areas are organized to take
advantage of what nature has provided, with the

with an HERS rating of 58, it’s 42% more energy
efficient than a home built to current code. The

and HEPA filtered fresh air into the home, and a
whole house steam humidification system that
brings moisture into the dry mountain air.

16 304 COUNTY ROAD 529CONTRACTOR MOUNTAIN LOG HOMES OF COLORADO, INC.
BRECKENRIDGE
DESCRIPTION
While searching for a site on which to build their
mountain home, Kansas City residents Lynn and
Doug found this wooded lot close to the town of
Breckenridge. And after meeting the staff at Mountain
Log Homes of Colorado, they knew they had found
the right team to make their dream home a reality.
The couple fell in love with Pioneer Log Homes of
British Columbia’s large, handcrafted Western red
cedar logs and decided to incorporate them into their
home’s design. Breathe in and look up as you tour
this home to appreciate the aroma and beauty of
these extraordinary logs.
Doug also wanted central gathering spaces for
family reunions with the couple’s three grown children,
outdoor living space where they could enjoy their Ten
Mile Range views, and lots of room for the family to
cook and enjoy meals together. Kitchenscapes helped
the couple design a gourmet kitchen with a large
central island.
Light and fresh air were also priorities for the
homeowners. They got both with a large wall of
low-E windows in the great room, as well as operable
windows thoughtfully positioned throughout the home
to ensure good airflow. Strategically placed task and
mood lighting highlight the unique log features, while
four fireplaces—including a wood burner for log-cabin
authenticity—provide warmth during the cold winters.
Each of this home’s bedroom suites has a unique
theme. The bunkroom, which sleeps six, features
genuine multicolored Pendleton blankets and animal-
themed lighting. The natural stone on the fireplaces
and bathroom tile contribute to the home’s sophisti-
cated lodge feel. The game room is yet another great
gathering space and features a wet bar, log pool
table, and access to a covered paver patio complete
with a hot tub and gas firepit.
The entry foyer was designed to highlight “Peace
Offering,” a bronze sculpture created by the late
artist Walt Horton. The homeowners have given their
own special names to the whimsical animals found
throughout their home, including “Benjamin Beaver,”
who was hand-carved into a log tail on the deck.
Says homeowner Lynn: “My dream is that everyone
who visits may find a wonderful peace and feeling of
warmth and love surrounding them.”
DIRECTIONS
From Main Street in Breckenridge, turn left on Boreas Pass Rd. and continue for 1.2 miles. Turn right on Illinois Gulch Road, then right onto Boreas Pass Road (CR10) for 0.5 miles. This home pushes the envelope for green building
in the high country: The solar-inspired showpiece
features the work of numerous local artisans and
is expected to earn LEED for Homes Silver certi-
fication. The homeowner chose Carlson Builders
for the firm’s expertise in sustainable construction
practices and the builder succeeded in integrating
architectural aesthetics with sustainable design
and construction, all while meeting a modest
custom-home budget.
Tremendous exposure to the sun’s rays is at
the core of this home’s design. Solar techniques
include two photovoltaic arrays, solar panels to
heat domestic hot water, daylighting, and unique
thermo-siphoning air panels on the south wall.
The home’s exterior is a tight skin that wraps the
interior spaces; openings are appropriate to the
home’s function and contemporary theme. Cedar
shingles and siding, zinc accents and a stone
base emphasize a natural look that will weather
well in the harsh high-altitude environment.
Interiors continue the theme of contemporary
snow-country home; here, the materials palette is
natural, clean and elegant. Unique features include
a great room fireplace with cold-rolled steel man-
tel, paneled wood walls with hidden built-ins, ex-
panses of floor-to-ceiling glass, stained concrete
and ash hardwood floors, recycled glass mosaic
tile, and locally made concrete countertops.
Thanks to its innovative design and construction,
this residence is projected to use less than half of
the energy consumed by a typical home of its size.
DIRECTIONS
Drive south on Main Street in Breckenridge. Turn
left on Wellington Road and continue straight
through four stop signs (0.5 mile). The road then

DESCRIPTION
Located in Breckenridge’s prestigious Highlands Park neighborhood, along the Jack Nicklaus- designed golf course, this home features thought-ful architectural proportions, impeccable crafts-manship and generous fairway and ten mile range views.
At first glance, the home appears larger than its actual size. Its elevation spans more than 120 feet, taking full advantage of what would ordinarily be considered a tricky building site. Delicately positioned on a 25-percent slope, the home’s grand elevation has earned it the name “Gold Run Lodge.”
The architectural motives for this project were to provide an appealing home with the most impact given the site conditions, while remaining practical to the means, methods and costs as-sociated with high-altitude construction.
Inside the “Gold Run Lodge,” that impact is immediately apparent. Upon entering, you are surrounded by mountain elegance beyond expectation. Views and sunlight stream in from all angles. Soaring radius beams and stone arch-ways add drama. Bedrooms offer ample en-suite baths, a gourmet kitchen features refined granite countertops, and natural stone floors add style underfoot. The conscious attention to detail found in this exquisite home is a refreshing reminder that dreams are still possible on a budget.

DESCRIPTION
From this project’s inception, the owners set out
to create a new home with a sense of history.
With features including timbers reclaimed from
the railroad trestles that once spanned the Great
Salt Lake, hardwood flooring salvaged from a
barn in Missouri, and doors crafted from beetle-
kill pine, nearly every element of this house has a
story to tell. With five bedrooms and baths, the
home is roomy enough to serve as a family retreat
for years to come.
Treading lightly on the land is important to the
homeowners, and the use of solar panels, low-
VOC paint, and tight insulation helps to minimize
their home’s impact on the environment. A re-
claimed walnut countertop, cabinets crafted from
beetle-kill pine and walnut sourced from storm-
damaged trees, soy-based stains and sealants,
recycled shingles and LED lighting add to the
beauty of the home, while furthering the goal of
sustainable design. The home’s furnishings follow
the same sustainable principles; with so many
green features, the design team recently sought
LEED certification. The end result is a beautiful,
comfortable home that sustainably serves as a
family retreat.

FRISCO
DESCRIPTION
Situated in Frisco’s prestigious Waterdance Subdivision with views of Peak One, Buffalo Mountain and Lake Dillon, this stunning mountain home was designed by Boulder, Colorado-based architect David A. Beal in the style and tradition of Apex Mountain Homes. The architect and builder were tasked with constructing a budget-conscious, energy efficient home that would be affordable for both the short and long term, and here they accomplished just that.
For this project, the guiding principle was practicality—while maintaining beauty and the highest quality. Together, Apex Mountain Homes and the homeowners adopted a concept of “Real Green.” This meant staying away from the latest “green” gimmicks and selecting products and processes that offer real value.
First, Apex used a framing method called Keymark, a groundbreaking way to transform the architect’s plan into a 3D framing plan. Every framing element was detailed and sent to a Ger-man Hundegger saw, measured exactly, then cut and marked for immediate assembly by the on-site framing crew. This process not only reduced waste but also improved the speed and quality of the construction.
Cabinetry and interior trim were created by Cut-ting Edge Woodworking, an award-winning Lead-ville-based firm that employs the latest computer and tooling techniques. The elegant handcrafted
cabinet fronts were installed at the end of the project to preserve their perfection. The enviable living room ceiling features salvaged beetle-kill pine from Vintage Woods. An all-natural process was used to give the wood an instant patina.
The “Real Green” efforts have paid off, as this home has scored a remarkable 135 points under the Summit Sustainable Building Code, and has also qualified for a refund of the plan-review fee by the town of Frisco. The homeowners were very pleased about their collaboration with Apex Mountain Homes and David A. Beal and Associates. “Not only did we get more than we expected,” they say, “but it was great fun.”

In Perfect HarmonyOPPOSITES ATTRACT—RUSTIC AND REFINED, MASCULINE AND FEMININE—IN A LARGER-THAN-LIFE HOME ON THE SHORES OF MONTANA’S WHITEFISH LAKE
To keep the focus on the spectacular views of Whitefish Lake, interior designer Hunter Dominick kept things simple in this out-door dining area. OPPOSITE: A 28-foot-tall fireplace is the undisputed star of the great room. “You have to stand in front of it toreally get a sense of the scale,” says residential designer Lyndon Steinmetz. “The firebox alone is 5½ feet tall; a person couldwalk right into it.” Because some of the stones used weigh more than two tons, they had to be lowered into place by a crane.

and appropriately so. Of Greek origin, the word translates to“it is finished,” and according to the owner of this Montana residence, completing the 10,000-square-foot home was no small feat. But thanks to the superb synergy among its design team, the lakeside retreat is finished—and as spectacular as its mountain backdrop.
Key to the success of this project was the owners’ clear vision. After narrowing their list of po-tential architects to two firms, they asked the finalists to draft proposals. In the end, Lyndon Stein-metz of Kalispell, Montana-based Lyndon L. Steinmetz Design was the winner of the mini designcompetition—in part, says his client, because “he could complete our sentences. When taking ona project of this scope, it’s important that you’re communicating; that you have the same ideas.”
Set on the shores of Whitefish Lake, the homesite was “very desirable, but tight,” says Stein-metz. “It’s only about 100 feet wide, hemmed in on the north by mountains and by an existinghouse and pond on the sides.” Steinmetz also had to contend with a vertical constraint, aslocal building codes specify a 35-foot vertical limit. “[The client] was looking for something >>

The home is called “Tetelestai,”
Venetian plastered walls with a waxed finish lend a warm glow to the diningroom. OPPOSITE: To create the freeform staircase and beamed tower, 35 lay-ers of plywood were twisted and glued together, then cut to the correctshapes. Then, explains Joe Hill of Rocky Mountain Builders, the new “timbers”were laminated with alder and aged to achieve the look of reclaimed wood.

partially timber framed,” says Steinmetz. “He wanted to usetimbers and native materials while varying the roof pitches, much like you see in old mining buildings around here.”
To satisfy the homeowners’ desire for a home that ap-peared old beyond its years, Steinmetz selected stone ofvarying shapes and sizes to clad the walls. Then the searchfor reclaimed timbers began. But because of the home’slarge scale, the right sizes just weren’t to be found. So Stein-metz turned to timber framer Sandy Koness of CentennialTimber Frames, who set about creating customized timbersfor the project. Starting with new Douglas fir logs, sheroughed up the edges, made marks with braces and bits, andeven added and removed bolts and washers. To add an in-stant patina, she applied ferrous sulfate, which reacted withthe wood to give the timbers a weathered gray tone.
When interior designer Hunter Dominick joined the col-laboration, she worked with the homeowners to create re-freshingly unexpected interiors that juxtapose rustic withrefined, masculine with feminine. In fact, what started as asimple search for fabrics in Dominick’s Whitefish showroomevolved into the designer’s involvement in every aspect of theproject. “[The homeowner] brought in photos of her formerhome in California so I could get a sense of their style and, likethey say, a picture is worth a thousand words,” says Dominick.
Because the owners were virtually starting from scratch,Dominick had the luxury of working with a clean slate. Still, there were some definite must-haves. For one, the ownerswanted to infuse the rustic home with some formality. >>
“Our goal was to do something a little different and unexpected.” — Hunter Dominick

The grandeur of stonework, timber framing and exceptional lighting is found both indoors and out, evidenced in this fireside seating area.OPPOSITE: Characterized by an enormous amount of rock—more than 1,100 tons—and large-scale timbers, this residence seems to or-ganically grow out of the landscape. To add to the effect, the structure’s stone face was slightly tapered. “The stone walls slope 1 de-gree out from the building from the top to the bottom,” explains Steinmetz. “The stone needed to be at least 4 inches thick at the verytop of the walls, so as we sloped down, we increased the thickness to almost 16 inches wide at the ground. The result is a massivelythick wall around the first floor doors and living room and great room windows. I think this really added to the home’s overall appeal.”

That request is fulfilled beautifully in the great room, where a luxe leather sofa and gold-leafed side table face a towering stonefireplace flanked by oversized hickory chairs. In the dining room, chairs upholstered with a lush cinnamon-hued velvet seemperfectly at home next to a rustic window wall and rough-hewn ceiling beams.
The home’s predominantly gold-and-copper color palette, inspired by Italy’s sun-drenched landscapes, infuses each spacewith warmth, even in the cold of winter. To add visual interest, Dominick chose a layering of textures: from sparkling glass tileto embroidered silk fabric, smooth granite countertops to grasscloth-covered walls, there’s a surprise for the eye at every turn.
But surprises are what this home is all about. Straightforward architecture is paired with intricately detailed interiors. Mas-culine elements stand comfortably next to pieces with feminine flair. It’s a rustic-meets-refined point of view that, instead ofcoming off as contradictory, creates a home balanced in perfect harmony. ●

Forming a contemporary X shape, the Krmpotichs’ home makes a bold statementin the traditional town of Casper, Wyoming. Maintaining a low profile, the home is ex-pertly nestled into the base of a hill. Its careful siting offers protection from the gust-ing wind and allows the structure to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Slopingroof lines at varying heights soften the design and mimic the gently rolling hills.

where wildlife sightings arecommonplace and nature buffs are drawn to the raw beauty of the landscape,an architectural anomaly draws attention. Home to a local physician and hisfamily, the decidedly modern residence makes a bold statement in a townwhere the predilection is toward traditional designs in neat, predictableneighborhoods.
“When we decided to build a new home on the outskirts of town, we wereopen to the architectural possibilities that varied from our traditional roots,”says homeowner Phil Krmpotich. “We wanted to do something a little bitdifferent. When we discovered the Midcentury-Modern style, we liked howit worked with the mountain landscape.”
The design’s original two-story façade was quickly edited to a single storyto contend with the harsh Wyoming climate. Bitter temperatures, unrelent-ing snowfalls and a biting wind that can gust in excess of 60 miles per hourall combined to create a unique design challenge. >>

A contemporary work of art, the kitchen features a stainless-steel countertop and cherry cabinets that expertly hide appliances and complement the home’s design. OPPOSITE: At the central point where the structure’s two wings meet, the architects designed a playful central node with three “spots” of light. Taking inspiration from the architectural detail, interior designer Nina Seirafi created an impromptu gallery, placing three solid petrified wood spheres in the middle of the walking space.
135
Considering these formidable forces of nature, Abramson Teiger Architects of Culver City, Cali-fornia, created a design plan that worked in concert with the surroundings and addressed the Krm-potichs’ desire for a decidedly different design. In response to the site’s challenges, the architectsdesigned a low-slung structure anchored in concrete, steel and wood that clings to the base of a hill-side. Forming a contemporary X shape, the home has gracefully elongated wings that stretch into thecountryside. “The design plan we created translated into a beautiful composition,” says DouglasTeiger, AIA, managing principal of the firm. “The unconventional shape of the house allowed for dif-ferent views from every room while also creating a very functional living space with private and pub-lic wings that are connected by a family playroom at the junction.”
The home’s unique footprint not only creates an aesthetically pleasing design but also serves as acalculated answer to nature’s wrath. As the gusting wind crests the hill behind the home, it plummetsdown and across the rooftop. The arc-like, aerodynamic shape of the roof channels the wind, shield-ing the structure from the forceful gales.
On the home’s exterior, concrete, steel, wood and glass add texture, accenting the structure’s slop-ing wings. Thick concrete walls extend up from the ground to a 10-foot-high baseline. Above this visualbreak are horizontal bands of redwood that add warmth and a Western quality to the modern home—as well as a striking contrast to the cool, industrial concrete. Inside, the baseline continues through theuse of similar materials, transitioning seamlessly from exterior to interior. >>
136
Walls of windows further the home’s connection with its surroundings. “Most of thehomes we design in Southern California have a strong indoor/outdoor interaction,” saysTrevor Abramson, FAIA, design principal of the firm. “We wanted to bring that Califor-nia feeling to this home by highlighting its physical connection to the land.” Becausethe harsh climate prohibits large windows that open to let the breezes in, the architectsopted for expansive inoperable windows designed to withstand strong wind gusts whilestill capturing “the beautiful quality of light and picturesque view,” says Abramson.
With its strong connection to the land and thoughtful detail, the home embracesthe fundamentals of understated modern elegance. Inside, handpicked furnishingsand artistic embellishments are the perfect complement to the home’s strong, archi-tectural lines. Bold pops of color add interest and a touch of warmth that channelsthe family’s traditional roots but stays true to the feel of a modern mountain dwelling.
A topic of conversation in Casper from the start, this home seems to be changingsome preconceived notions about modern design. “In the beginning, the challenge wasbuilding a contemporary house in a town where all of the craftsmen were skilled in tra-ditional design,” Teiger explains. “But, as the project progressed, these craftsmen reallyput their hearts and souls into it, creating a home that transcends the perception of theunconventional modern home, and rooting it in the traditional Wyoming landscape.” ●
137
“When we first met, [homeowner Jamie Krmpotich] had a clear plan for the design,” Seirafi explains. “She wanted to keep the modern language of the housewhile incorporating the functionality of a traditional home. Not willing to com-promise on comfort and luxury, we embraced her vision and added characterthrough an eclectic mix of pieces that evoke different vibes in different rooms.”
When it comes to accessorizing modern spaces, many homeowners struggle to achieve a clean, modernlook that still feels livable and warm, often going to extremes with a bland color scheme and severe fur-nishings that make a space uninviting and austere. Interior designer Nina Seirafi offers a few words of ad-vice for those looking to strike the balance between comfort and modern style:
CREATE A DESIGN PLAN “Before you begin the design process, consider how you are going to use thespace and how your family functions in that space.” A room that functions well is naturally comfortable.
KNOW YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES “With a firm plan in hand, begin picking items based on the char-acter of each family member. Be careful to only use those materials and colors that you respond to.”
UNDERSTAND YOUR ENVIRONMENT “The colors of nature, as well as the function of a room, oftenprecipitate the color palette. In a home with expansive openings, it’s especially important to select a palettethat reflects nature to alleviate tension between indoors and out. In an arid landscape, reflective materialsare a necessity; they help create a pleasing flow inside the space. The materials you choose should alsorespond to your surroundings. In the Krmpotichs’ home, we shied away from coarse materials, like wool, because we wanted to soften the contours of the interior in contrast to the harsh environment.”
GO ORGANIC “To suggest movement, which is especially important in a dry mountain landscape wherethings tend to be static, use contrasting proportions of the same shape.”
FINISH WITH ART AND ACCESSORIES “Adding a variety of artistic embellishments brings the roomto the next level. A space that is only accented by modern pieces often loses its appeal, whereas a spacewith both contemporary and vintage elements creates excitement and a unique complementary quality.”

Not the latest, sleekest fabrications, but old reclaimed materialsthat are full of history and character.
Martin and his team at the Texas-based design-build firmTony Martin Inc.—started by Ira’s father, Tony—comb thecountry in search of those perfectly imperfect buildings thathave been worn, grayed and weathered over time. Then theycarefully dismantle the old and reincarnate the bones intosomething beautiful and new.
One of these transformations took place in the hills near St.Helena, California, where Martin recently created an array ofdwellings. Comprised of a 2,000-square-foot main house, a de-tached study and three 1,100-square-foot guesthouses, the fam-ily compound was pieced together using reclaimed materialssourced from all over the country. The flooring was found in a1950s sewing factory. The hand-hewn beams come from theOhio River Valley and date back to the mid-1800s. And the stoneMartin discovered in an old Pony Express outpost in Indian Gap,Texas—a place so small, it’s really nothing more than a fewbuildings. “It’s just a sign, not even a town,” Martin says. >>
ARCHITECT IRA MARTIN HAS AN EYE FOR MATERIALS.
PIECES OFHISTORY
In the great room of the main house, the kitchen, dining andsurrounding living areas—all crafted from materials re-claimed from dismantled old buildings—flow together in asmart floorplan. Architect Ira Martin describes it as “individualspaces that can feel open but intimate.” Oversized warehouse-style shelves in the dining area help define the space whilemaintaining that open feel, and a custom light fixture and venthood, both designed by Martin, add a distinctive touch.

The main house (on the far side of the pool), one of the guesthouses (to the right) and thepool itself all share a similar footprint, which Martin describes as “simple, straightforwardand not too fancy.” Other design elements, including the chimneys and door openings, were also modeled after this shape. OPPOSITE: A large steel-clad fireplace, which takescenter stage in the entry to the main house, was inspired by a bit of European history: “Ifyou’d walk into a home in old Italy, you’d see the grandmother coming and going all day, stoking the fire to keep the house warm,” Martin says. “It really was the centerpiece.”
143
As Martin passed through the town one day, a simple structure caught his eye. Its hand-sawnstone exterior fit together so well that it appeared to be one smooth surface. “It had developed whatI call a French palette—that bluish, gray-green patina,” he says. “You know, you can’t buy that.”
That striking stone, which now covers the main house’s façade, would provide the inspiration forthe dwelling’s entire materials palette—the grayish floors left unsanded, the off-white plaster walls. To create an interior scheme that would complement these architectural materials, Martin teamedup with homeowner Shea Kos, who had a clear vision for the space.
Kos hoped to achieve a sophisticated industrial look; a blend of delicate lines and rugged mate-rials. The industrial component is evident in the rustic unfinished stone and beams on display in themain residence’s great room, and in the exposed concrete walls in the master suites’ spa-like bathrooms. You can see it in the warehouse-style shelving in the great room—oversized to match thematerials’ scale—and in the entry’s steel-clad fireplace. >>

A collection of furnishings, amassed by Kos over the course of several years—and severaltrips to Europe—mix with some surprisingly delicate touches to add an air of sophisticationto the otherwise rugged, masculine space. Thinly framed steel windows and doors add ele-gance, and exposed plumbing in the bathrooms balances the concrete walls. In the great room,a custom light fixture and dramatic vent hood, both designed by Martin, complete the space.
Martin’s approach to reclaiming the past may not be the fastest, most efficientmethod. In fact, the team only works on two or three projects at a time. But it’s all bydesign. They understand that there’s a beautiful balance and proportion to be found inhistory—and that achieving it often requires a look back before moving forward.
“Old buildings are really proportionate,” explains Martin. “They have that old farm-house look because they were simple to build.” And because construction was so straight-forward, he says, “you could focus on the materials.”
Martin and his team aim to work with homeowners who are as passionate about theprocess as they are, and who they hope will keep the structures in the family for poster-ity’s sake. “We create these legacy estates for people so they can enjoy them with theirfamilies,” he says, “then hand them down like a piece of furniture or an antique.” ●

Consider the design elements at play in the master suitein one of the guesthouses (this page), and homeownerShea Kos’ vision for a look of “industrial sophistication”becomes clear. Delicately framed steel doors and a sim-ple bed pair with an exposed concrete wall to achievethe juxtaposition she had in mind. OPPOSITE: Theguesthouse’s spa-like bathroom, which opens to a meditation garden, repeats the rugged-meets-delicatetheme. “We wanted to take the design a step beyondyour typical bathroom, and we tried to give it a true spafeel while still keeping that industrial flavor,” Martin says.
