Chapel echoes April 7, 2014 / Issue 56 Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, Inc.
Praise the Lord! “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him may not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). This is the Gospel, the Good
News, summed up in twenty-six words. God’s self-sacrificing act delivered to us as a gift to
restore us to our created purpose: a life lived with God. Throughout the history of humanity and our own personal history, we have turned away from God – sometimes intentionally, sometimes casually, sometimes thoughtlessly. These separations from God are always
outside of God’s will and therefore are sin, despite how small we may consider them to be. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans
6:23). This free gift comes from the events of Jesus’ life we call Holy Week, his suffering,
death, and resurrection.
I hope you will take part in the Holy Week offerings through Morris Chapel to remember God’s gift to you and reconnect yourself to God.
◊ This coming Sunday (April 13th), known as Palm Sunday, begins Holy Week. We
celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem triumphantly riding a donkey as the crowd waved palm branches and shouted “Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.” Our children will lead our own palm processional.
◊ On Thursday, April 17th at 7pm we host the Community Maundy Thursday Worship
Service in our Sanctuary. First Baptist Church and Love’s United Methodist Church
will join us in communal worship as we will celebrate The Lord’s Supper Jesus
instituted when he gathered with his disciples in the upper room for the Passover feast. The Reverend Phil Wagoner of First Baptist Church in Walkertown will preach.
◊ On Good Friday, April 18th our youth group will be participating in the annual
Crosswalk in downtown Kernersville. Christians from across the area will gather in
the Food Lion parking lot on North Main Street at 9am to silently walk in reflection to Mt. Gur Cemetery as a large cross leads the processional. Our entire church is invited
to participate.
◊ Easter Sunday (April 20th) will be the glorious celebration of the Resurrection of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
We will host Easter Sunrise Worship in our church cemetery at 7am. Since the first Easter when the some of the women from Jesus’ band of followers went
early in morning to Jesus’ tomb, Christians have been gathering to commemorate the event. Our Director of Youth Ministry Katie Gaffner will
deliver the Sunrise message. You are invited to bring chairs for the service and encouraged to dress warmly. There will be fellowship with coffee and breakfast food following the Sunrise worship in the Fellowship Hall hosted by our United
Methodist Men.
Easter worship will continue in all three of our worship services (8:45, 9, &
11am). Our message this morning will recall the great cloud of witnesses to the
Resurrection of Jesus that we have built our faith upon. Additionally at our 11am worship, there will be a special musical presentation by our Music Ministry under the direction of Dr. Del Curling. We hope you will invite
family, friends, and neighbors to worship alongside of you as we celebrate Christianity’s holiest day.
In Remembrance, Pastor Dan

Upcoming Children’s Events Thank you for the Easter candy
and toy donations received so far!
If you have any questions, please
speak with Sam.
As of April 1, 2014 we have collected (with help from others in the community) 93
pounds of tabs! We have been collecting since September so, that is an average of
15.5 pounds per month!
What we as a church have accomplished so far, is that we have paid for one family to
stay a night at the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem. Remember the tabs
are all not drink tabs, they come soup cans, cat food and other cans that have pull
tabs. Let’s keep the challenge going as we help families who are going through a lot of
stress as their child is sick and is seeking medical attention.
I want to break this down into a visual, which helped me realize that awesomeness of this mission. Morris Chapel rocks!!!!! Keep the tabs coming!!!!!
93 pounds of tabs=93,000 tabs…are the following containers FILLED to the top…
- One 32 gallon trash can (80 pounds) - Four 1 gallon milk jugs (each jug holds 3lbs.)
- Two sandwich size Ziploc bags (each bag holds ½ pound)

We have had a few questions about Gift of Grace monthly
collection. We have a list of suggested ideas to pick up or bring each month. This is a reminder of items that we need, but you
may bring gently used or new clothes, used toy, coats, or household liner ANYTIME and leave outside the Chapel or Faith
in Action classroom. We are only taking household linens this year. Thank you for your support. If any question please call
me, Sharon Burnette, at 306-2450.

Director of Music Ministries
Youth Music News
Youth Choir will be practicing the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at 6pm. Next
practice will be on April 16th.
I need a few youth ladies to help sing/lead the children’s choir on Palm Sunday, April
13th—this will be during a piece at the 11am service combining the adult and older children’s
choirs, piano, organ, and handbells. Let Del know if you can help with this, and be at the
children’s choir practice on Wednesday, April 9th at 6:45pm to learn the part.
Youth are also encouraged to join with the adults in presenting the Easter musical “Jesus is
Alive” at the 11am Easter service (April 20th)—we will practice this some on Wednesday
night, April 16th, but there will also be two Saturday AM rehearsals on 4/12 (9 to 10am) and
4/19 (9 to 10:30am)
After Easter, we will work on some pieces that will also involve adding instruments (guitars,
drums, etc.), so dust off your voices and instruments and come to practice on Wednesday
nights.
Adult Music News
All interested singers are invited to join us on Wednesday evenings (4/9, 4/16) to work on
“Jesus Is Alive!”, a mini-musical that will be presented on Easter morning, April 20th at the
1100 service (if only singing with the choir on Easter Sunday, it would be OK to arrive at
Wednesday night choir practice around 7:30pm, as practice starting at 7pm will involve
work on weekly repertoire, to be followed by work on the Easter musical). There will also
be two special Saturday AM rehearsals on April 12th (9 to 10am) and 19th (9 to 10:30am).
Beginning this month, the adult choir meets every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 pm in the
choir room. Childcare is now provided during the choir practice time, coordinated by Sam.
NO CHOIR PRACTICE on 4/2/14, in honor of all the Spring Breakers
The Men’s Chorus continues to meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday evenings at 7pm—all men
of MCUMC are invited to join in this time of music and fellowship. The Men will next be
leading in worship on Memorial Day weekend (May 25th).
Children’s Music News
The Sunshine Kids and Rainbow Connection children’s choirs are working on music to
present on Easter morning, April 20th, with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day presentations
also coming up in the coming weeks. They will continue to meet with their leaders on the
2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7pm.
The elementary age choir will also be singing with the adult choir on Sunday, April 13th;
they will stay after their usual practice on 4/9 to work a few minutes with the adults (should
be done by 7:15 or so)
An accompanist is needed for the older children’s choir—if you are reasonably proficient on
the piano and are willing to volunteer some time to work with our children to learn and
share the love of Christian music, please contact Del.
