CHM controlled vocabularyCHM controlled vocabulary- what is involved - - what is involved -
2
Which are the stepsWhich are the steps1. Building and translating the controlled vocabulary
1. Agree on the list of terms2. Incorporate translations from the countries
2. Tagging the content1. Use a new field besides “keywords”?2. Change the GUI to easily browse the vocabulary 3. Auto-complete 4. Autosuggest?
3. Improving the searches1. Pick words for searching2. Multilingual searches – display the content tagged with the
term or its translations4. Syndication
1. Provide support in the PTK for feeds of content that contain a keyword
2. Multilingual feeds3. Provide help for CHMs not using the PTK
3
1. Building and translating the controlled vocabulary
First version already done by Rob Translations available in fr, nl, ro, ee, de Issues:
Obtain as many translations as possible for the exercise
Keep the terms updated on national portals in longer term
Distribute the list of terms for countries not using the PTK
4
2. Tagging the content (1)
Having a separate field for the controlled vocabulary terms? Today’s demonstration assumes so Pro: clarity and improved system speed,
con: more work for the content provider
Autosuggest - i.e. trying to identify the terms based on the current content – not practical, as the terms contain multiple words
5
2. Tagging the content (2)
Autocomplete Display a list of terms that contain the
typed letters, regardless of where they appear in the words
6
2. Tagging the content (3)
Better browsing of the vocabulary Replace the old popup window with a
bigger overlay space in the same window Allow an easy inspection and search of the
entire glossary
7
3. Improving the searches (1)
Allow users to search by the same terms that are introduced by the content providers Example from semide.net:
8
3. Improving the searches (2)
Other improvements: Display a “tag cloud”, although the terms
of our glossary are not atomic words, but phrases
If keywords were picked from the glossary/vocabulary, search for content that contains the translation(s) of the keywords
9
4. Syndication (1)
Changes in the European PTK (proposal): Feeds and corresponding portlets will become
available for the aggregation of the content tagged with a certain keyword
On folders tagged with a keyword, the above right-side portlets will automatically appear
Separation of these feeds based on language Help for the CHM nodes not using the PTK:
A manual for providing feeds in RSS/RDF/ATOM formats will be distributed Other formats protocols can be included later, for
the first exercise we want to keep things simple Specific helpdesk for the country developers in order
to build these feeds on their own platforms
10
4. Syndication (2)
Regional/global portals (e.g. the EC CHM, cbd.int) will be able to aggregate thematic feeds from the countries
Examples: Upcoming events for “Status of threatened
species” Latest news on “Coverage of protected areas” Recent publications on “Climate change”
