MINISTRY OF EDUCATION Education Month Art Competition
Rules and Guidelines The CORONA VIRUS, COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the closure of all schools since March 13, 2020 significantly impacting not only learners but teachers and parents countrywide and globally as a whole. This prolonged closure of school as you can imagine has significantly impacted the learning continuity for children. Many homes have also been affected and the Ministry of Education is aware that parents are concerned about their child or children academic Life and the continuation of his/her educational journey. To ensure that learning continuity takes place, the Ministry of Education has planned several programmes and will continue to chart a course to provide learners with access to continuous learning.
On the occasion of Education Month, 2020, the Education Month Committee proposes to have a Child Art Competition. The competition invites children to explore their interpretation of the theme – “Responding to health and Safety precautions in a time of pandemic: Let’s take Corona Virus seriously”.
The Committee proposes to have an art competition involving all of the Education Districts of Guyana. Participation in this competition will testify that Art has the power to heal, to save lives and bring us together even while we are apart, to guide us and inspire us to stay strong, safe and united.
GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES
All children from ages 6 – 17 years, residing in one of 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana are encouraged to participate in the COVID 19 Child Art Competition.
The competition is open to individual entrants from learners of the 6 - 8, 9 - 11, 12 - 14 and 15 - 17 years age groups.
The participants are invited to produce two-dimensional artworks in the categories of DRAWING & PAINTING, DRAWING, PAINTING, expressing their interpretation of the COVID 19 Pandemic as it relates to the theme.
The artworks may be done in any suitable medium/media.
All art MUST be PROPERLY mounted
Each participant is allowed only one entry.
The competition’s rules should be provided to all participants: organizations/institution and learners
SAFETY PRACTICES
Participants are encouraged to practice occupational health and safety procedures in the production of the artworks.
Materials considered dangerous to health and safety MUST NOT be used. These include blood and bodily fluids, green leaves and green seeds, broken glass, sharp objects, such as needles, barbed wire, corrugated iron and staples.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING 1. VISUAL IMPACT - The Overall Appearance/Message of the artwork without regard to the other
criteria. 2. CRAFTSMANSHIP - The appropriate selection and manipulation of the Medium/Media in the
production of the artwork. 3. DESIGN & COMPOSITION - The organization of the Elements and Principles to produce an effective
arrangement in the artwork. 4. INTERPRETATION - The use of imagery, icons/symbols to establish cultural connections in relation to
the theme. 5. ORIGINALITY - The innovative way in which the theme is portrayed.
All the education districts are responsible for collecting the completed works and submitting them to the Unit of Allied Arts, Flat # 4, Queen’s College Compound.

SPECIFIC RULES AND GUIDELINES I. The works will be in two-dimensional in the form of DRAWING & PAINTING, DRAWING or PAINTING.
II. Each learner will be given a Certificate of Participation. III. Works must reach each Education Department by September 18, 2020. IV. Education Departments MUST submit entries to the Ministry of Education – Unit of Allied Arts, Flat #4
Queen’s College Compound no later than 15:00h on September 25, 2020. V. Five outstanding artworks from each category and age group from each Education District will be
short listed for judging. VI. The entries will be juried at a special session from September 28 – October 02, 2020. The three most
outstanding artworks in each category and age group will be awarded prizes. VII. Each artwork MUST be appropriately labelled (see label attached). A description should accompany
each art work. VIII. A medal and a gift voucher will be given to all winners.
IX. The copyright of the artworks will be retained by the Ministry of Education and will be used in promotional events deemed appropriate by the Ministry.
X. The Ministry of Education will keep all winning entries and winners will NOT have rights of return. XI. The Ministry of Education cannot be held responsible for force majeure should the competition have
to be modified or cancelled. XII. Submission of an entry presupposes the acceptance of all conditions by the participants. No appeal
on the method of the organization or on the results of the competition will be accepted. The Judges’ decisions will be final.

Learners may use any suitable technique such as:
