“Our hearts go outto the family mem-bers and friendsimpacted by themass shooting out-side of Serenity Fu-neral Home onWednesday.
No family in our community should haveto suffer the grief and pain of gun vio-lence—especially while mourning the lossof a loved one.
Over 15 people have been shot in Mil-waukee over the last 24 hours. Since Feb-ruary of this year we have seen a 100%increase in homicides. In recent years, wehave seen increasing levels of gun violencein the fall months.
We cannot rely on cold weather to slowthis deadly epidemic.
In 2020 our 414 LIFE team has seen a54% increase in referrals of gun shot vic-tims to the program though our partnershipwith Froedtert Hospital.
The team has conducted over 53 high-risk mediations this year which, could haveresulted in a shooting or homicide.
This level of gun violence requires all ofus to do more to de-escalate tensions andresolve conflicts and disagreements withoutresorting to gun violence.
In 2015, Milwaukee saw a 70% increasein homicides. Since that time, we expanded
our efforts to address violence as a publichealth issue and increased investments incommunity based solutions identified in theBlueprint for Peace.
The uptick in violence in 2020 comes aftera steady 4-year decline in non-fatal shoot-ings and homicides from 2016-2019. In-creased access to firearms paired with thestress, tension, and despair caused byCovid 19 is having an impact on violence incities across the country.
This year we have seen a sharp increasein suicides and mass shooting incidentsthat began with the Molson Coors shooting.
We must treat every single shooting as astate of emergency and act with the ur-gency it deserves.
Measures such as Universal BackgroundChecks and Emergency Risk Protection Or-ders can have a profound effect on reduc-ing suicides and domestic violence relatedshootings and homicides.
In addition, we call on state leaders tosupport measures to establish a statewide
