ICT IN MILITARY
ICT Driven Revolution to SocietyITS3243
Introduction
• Defense industry is one of the many industries which are strongly impacted by Information and Communication Technology.
• ICT had transformed the industry from :
– producing dumb bombs to smart weapons, – people-centric to network-centric battlefields management,– aftermath combat review to real-time combat surveillance, – land and sea to air and outer space superiority, – hardware-based to software-based force multipliers.
Dumb Bombs to Smart Weapons
• Before ICT era
– Inabilities to choose or select proper targets.
– unable to differentiate between high-value targets from unimportant ones.
• After ICT era
– highly efficient and sharply accurate.
– could communicate with weapons under their command.
– destroy very specific targets without destructing the surrounding area.
People-centric to Network-centric Battlefields Management
• Before ICT era
– required large number of peoples, weapons and equipments to:
• create winning situation
• to control the front-line and cover their left and right flanks.
• After ICT era
– could monitor troops advancement to enemy’s line, their position in the battlefield, the number of casualties, as well as the level of ammunition supply (when to replenish them).
– intra-troops communication is also improved with network-centric devices.
Aftermath Combat Review to Real-time Combat Surveillance
• Before ICT era
– no devices being invented to assist the military personnel review their actions in combat.
– depended on their own accounts and memories.
– was done by using maps, models of the combat areas, and direct investigation by higher rank officers.
• After ICT era
– combat events are feed at real-time from the battlefield to the command center.
– calculate precisely the range between target and their position, measure time will take to travel from one point to another accurately.
Land and Sea to Air and Outer Space Superiority
• Before ICT era
– focus of military activities was towards land and sea superiority.
– lots of equipment and devices to support the focus.
– conflict will be on land because unable check enemy at sea before they reach to the soil.
• After ICT era
– unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) that can fly independently to remote areas hundreds kilometers from its launch-base.
– powerful satellite that can be used to survey the land, ocean, and atmosphere.
Hardware-based to Software-based Force Multipliers
• Before ICT era
– spending lots of cash to pay for the hardware.
– promoted military hardware such as
• big caliber artillery pieces as the queen of battlefield,
• main battle tanks as the king of battlefield that could destruct large areas as the force multipliers.
• After ICT era
– the software implanted inside the equipment (hardware)
– software are used in many hardware such as
• long range radar, • battlefield management
system, • global positioning system
(GPS), • missiles active guide system,
and etc.
Baseline Satellite Platform
• To maximize payload performance with capacity to support military communication services.
• To have minimal impact in incorporating ground infrastructures.
• To support legacy ground equipment.
