MFP 114 Islamic Education: Theory and Practice

Aims: ThiscourseintroducestheconceptofIslamiceducationthroughcriticallyexaminingdifferentperceptionsandacademicapproaches,developedtodefinethesubject.ThecourseexplorestraditionalandcontemporaryMuslimeducationalthoughtandeducationalinstitutions,anddiscussesthepossibilityofdevelopingalearner-centeredapproachtoIslamiceducation.TheemphasiswillbeontheimportanceofcontemporaryeducationalresearchinIslamiceducation,especiallyresearchspringingfromthesocialsciencesdirectedtowardspedagogyandcurriculum.ThecoursewilllookatthetheoryandpracticeofIslamiceducationinthemodernMuslimworldandacrossMuslimcommunitiesintheWest.

MFP 224 Developing Research Strategies in Islamic Education

Aims:ThecourseaimstointroducestudentstotheinterdisciplinarynatureofresearchinIslamiceducationandexaminedistinctresearchapproaches(empirical,philosophicalandhistorical)developedwithinthefield.Thecourseaimstodevelopthestudents’criticalandanalyticalskillswhichareessentialaspectsoflearningandresearchatpostgraduatelevel.ThemoduleisparticularlydirectedtowardspreparingMasters’levelstudentsforplanninganddevelopingtheirdissertationwork.

Learning Outcomes:Studentsshouldbeabletodemonstrateknowledgeandunderstandingoftheoreticalissuesinformingeducationalresearch,andbeabletoevaluatepracticalresearchdesignsadoptedwithinthefield.

MFP 235 Educational Studies: An Introduction

Aims:Thecourseexaminesthesocial,historicalandphilosophicalfoundationunderpinningmodernconceptionsofeducation,andexploresmajorcontemporaryperspectivesondefiningtheeducationalprocessanditscentralaspects:thenatureoflearningandteaching.Theroleofeducationincontemporarymulticultural/multifaithsocialpolicieswithspecialreferencetotheBritisheducationalsystemiscriticallyexamined.

Learning Outcomes: Studentsshouldhavedevelopedadeeperknowledgeandunderstandingoftheeducationalprocessandthemajorperspectivesontheoryandpracticeofmoderneducation.
