MFP 114 Islamic Education: Theory and Practice

Aims: ThiscourseintroducestheconceptofIslamiceducationthroughcriticallyexaminingdifferentperceptionsandacademicapproaches,developedtodefinethesubject.ThecourseexplorestraditionalandcontemporaryMuslimeducationalthoughtandeducationalinstitutions,anddiscussesthepossibilityofdevelopingalearner-centeredapproachtoIslamiceducation.TheemphasiswillbeontheimportanceofcontemporaryeducationalresearchinIslamiceducation,especiallyresearchspringingfromthesocialsciencesdirectedtowardspedagogyandcurriculum.ThecoursewilllookatthetheoryandpracticeofIslamiceducationinthemodernMuslimworldandacrossMuslimcommunitiesintheWest.

MarkfieldislocatedbetweenLoughboroughandLeicester.ItisapproximatelysixmilesfromLoughboroughandaround10milesfromLeicester.Nottinghamisabout30minutesdrivefromMarkfieldandBirminghamislessthananhourbycar.MIHEisideallysituatedtoalloweasyaccesstothesethreeimportantcitiesandtheuniversitieswithinthem.

EastMidlandsAirport(about12miles)andBirminghamInternationalAirport(about40miles)arewithineasyreach.TheM1motorwayleadseasilytoLondon’sHeathrowandGatwickairports.TrainsrunatregularintervalsfromLondontoLeicesterwiththejourneyonlytaking70minutes.ThereisalsoacoachservicefromLondonHeathrowtoLeicester.

Markfield,thelocationofMIHE,offersanidylliclearningenvironment,awayfromthehustleandbustleofcitylifeyetveryeasytoreach,beingonlyone-and-a-halfmilesfromjunction22oftheM1.


On CampusAccommodation

Accommodationoncampusconsistsofsecureself-containedseparateaccommodationforfemaleandmalestudents.Astherearealimitednumberofrooms,allocationismadeonafirst-come-first-servedbasis.Allon-campusaccommodationisself-cateringandrentischargedatacostof£175percalendarmonth.Alternatively,studentsmaychoosetofindtheirownaccommodationinMarkfieldornearbyLeicesterorLoughborough.Thecostofprivatelyrentedaccommodationvariesdependingonthelocationandconditionoftheproperty.Familiesseekingresidencewillbeassistedintheirsearchforaccommodation.

ThelibraryiswidelyregardedasoneofthebestprivatelibrariesinEuropespecialisinginIslam.Itcontainsover30,000booksandperiodicalsandaround400journals,withaspecialistcollectiononIslamiceconomics,bankingandfinance.StudentsandstaffcanalsoaccesstheLearningResourceCentresoftheUniversityofGloucestershireandlocallibrariesintheEastMidlands.

MIHEhasdedicatedITfacilitiesprovidinginternetandreprographicfacilities.Studentscanaccessthesefacilitiesbetween9.00amand10.00pmdaily.

Application Procedure – MA/MEd/PG Diploma/PG Certificate

What is prior learning?

AccreditationofPriorLearning(APL)isanopportunityforyoutobegivencreditforlearningthatyouhavedonepriortocommencingyourstudiesatMIHE,orforlearningthatyouarecurrentlydoingoutsideofMIHE.Itavoidsthenecessityofduplicatingpreviouslearning,whilstensuringasystemthatdulyrecognizesthesuccessfulattainmentoflearningoutcomes,bothinsideandoutsideofMIHE,thatareappropriatetoyouraward.

Onlypriorlearningthatisequivalenttoorisofahighervalue/levelthanyourMIHEprogrammemaybecounted.

YourabilityinEnglishisveryimportantandifEnglishisnotyourfirstlanguageyouwillneedevidenceofyourEnglishlanguagelevelbeforeyoustartyourprogramme.


Priorlearningmaybe(i)experiential:learningachievedoutsideaformaleducationalenvironmentor(ii)certified:learningforwhichyouhavereceivedaformalqualification.

What credit can I be awarded?

Eligibility for National Health Service (NHS) Treatment

Allfull-timeinternationalstudentswhoareenrolledforacontinuousperiodofstudyforsixmonthsorlongerareentitledtofreemedicaltreatmentfromtheNationalHealthService(NHS).YoucanregisterwiththelocalmedicalcentreunderthesamearrangementsasBritishstudents.OnceyouhaveregisteredwiththeNHS,mosttreatmentisfree.Chargesaremade,however,forprescriptions,dentalcareandeyetests.Ifyourequiretreatmentforapre-existingmedicalconditionyoumaybechargedforsuchtreatment.Insuchcases,itisadvisabletoconsidertakingouthealthinsurance.

Hardship Fund

• youhavebeenordinarilyresidentthroughoutthethreeyear-periodbeforethestartofyourcourse,and

• themainpurposeofyourresidenceintheUKandIslandsmustnothavebeentoreceivefull-timeeducationduringanypartofthethreeyear-period,and

• youhavebeengivenan“indefiniterighttoremain”intheUK.
