I felt that I was missing out on a GREAT opportunity to really assist academically struggling students You can give them information, but do
they really read it? Are we REALLY helping?
After thinking things over, and speaking with colleagues in Academic Advisement, I developed a new plan of action for my meetings.
Meet with students whose midterm GPA below a 2.0
Discuss their current GPA What implications could it have to have a low
GPA? What do they need to do to get it back to where
THEY need/want it Utilize the GPA Calculator and together
develop a course of action to get grades up
Still go over tips and strategies with them, as well as discuss the Student Learning Center and what it offers
PROBATION I STATUS
CUMULATIVE GPA
BELOW 2.0
ONE SEMESTER TO BRING
CUMULATIVE GPA
ABOVE 2.0
IF CUMULATIVE GPA ABOVE A
2.0, OFF PROBATION!
IF CUMULATIVE GPA
NOT ABOVE 2.0, BUT SEMESTER GPA IS, PUT
ON PROBATION II
IF CUMULATIVE GPA AND SEMESTERLY GPA
NOT ABOVE 2.0, MAY BE DISMISSED
ONE MORE SEMESTER TO GET CUMULATIVE
GPA ABOVE A 2.0 OR MAY BE DISMISSED
Found on the First Year Experience Website:

transfer RDs For Fall:• You can utilize the
calculator to help determine semester GPA, since they have no previous cumulative GPA
Upperclass RDs:• You will need to utilize the
students DARS report
You will be able to get current cumulative GPA
Also look to see if any of the classes are repeats! Most recent grade
and credits replace old class, NOT THE BEST GRADE
Only credit for one class, do not get double credits for taking the class
Current GPA
# of Credits student is currently taking
Freshman/Transfer Resident: At midterms, they have a 1.43 GPA They are taking BIO I, HIS 112, ENG 112,GEP
150, and CRJ 101, for a total of 14 credits▪BIO I is 4 credits, GEP 150 is 1 credit but is an S/U class, all others are 3 credits
If they continue doing poor with these classes, their cumulative GPA will be below a 2.0
They come to see you for help

Now that you have input the grades, you can now play with the grade to get the Cumulative GPA above a 2.0 to avoid Probation!
For first semester Freshmen, their Cumulative GPA and Semesterly GPA will be the same!
Transfer GPA not involved at all..Brockport GPA only!
12
By changing the letter grades, you can give a rough estimate as to what they need in their classes to avoid being put in Probation
This is only a close estimation..may not be actual GPA, but is close enough!

Probation I
Upperclass Student Midterm grade is a 1.25 GPA Overall GPA is a 1.85 Student is currently on Probation I for having
a Cumulative GPA below a 2.0 They are taking a total of 16 credits HST 386, BIO 221, PLS 113, ENL 165, HST 438 BIO 221 is 4 credits, everything else is 3
credits▪ PLS 113 is a repeatable class
13
They are already on Probation I---what does that mean?
They are repeating a class. This will really affect their GPA as it replaces their old grade, no matter of it is better or worse!
14
You will need to utilize three things off the DARS report to accurately assist the student
# of Credits you have completed# of credits currently being takenCurrent GPA
You will also need to scroll down and see of a class is being repeated (symbolized by a R+ next to the course)
15
1.85 GPA
# of Credits student is currently taking
Current GPA
65.0 CR Completed
16
If current grades do not change, their semester GPA will be below a 2.0, as well as the cumulative GPA as well! They could face possible dismissal!
In the example to the left, the semester GPA is above a 2.0, which would allow for the student to be on Probation II. Overall would be a 1.83
As you see, if the student achieved at minimum the grades to the Left, they would be off Probation entirely as their overall GPA is above a 2.00!
