Get Ready for the Masters Show

The Art League's annual Masters Show will begin in January 2020 at GVR's West Center Gallery. Reproductions of paintings created before 1940 are eligible for the show. In addition, there will be a special section highlighting works by Birger Sandzen (known as The American Van Gogh) and works by the six founding members of The Taos Society of Artists (Joseph Henry Sharp, E. Irving Couse, Oscar E. Berninghaus, W. Herbert Dunton, Ernest Blumenschein, & Bert Phillips). The Masters Show is probably one of the most popular SRAL shows because of the high quality of art completed by our members, and it is held at the busiest month for activities in the West Center.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

ABSTRACT BRIGGade

The Abstract BRIGGade meets once a month on the Friday after the SRAL general meeting. At the meeting, artists discuss their abstract art projects, give helpful critiques, talk about techniques and presentation of their work, plan shows, and exchange ideas that foster non-representational art. Everyone is welcome!

COLLAGE MIXED MEDIA The Collage Mixed Media Group meets on the First and Third Wednesdays of every month in the Main Studio unless there is a class being presented and we then meet in

Studio A. This is currently an informal group meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 for all who are

interested in collage and mixed media fine art.

DRAW, DOODLE AND TANGLE GROUP

The Draw, Doodle, and Tangle Group meets every Wednesday in the Main Studio from 1:00 to 3:00. The intent of our group is to provide a venue for anyone interested in developing, improving, and challenging their creative spirit through drawing (basic pencil and ink techniques), doodling (random lines and shapes), and tangling (repetitive patterns, i.e., Zentangle®).

LIFE DRAWING

The Life Drawing Group meets the first Saturday of the month, from November through May, for quick sketches and longer poses of a classically trained model. Come enjoy some relaxed figure studies with fellow artists. Any medium is accepted. The model fee is $5.00. For more information, to request to be placed on the group email list for last minute updates, or to reserve a spot, please email Nanci Sheppard at [email protected] call (541) 519-3780). We start each session promptly at 9 am. Please arrive a bit early to set up.

OIL PAINTERS of the ART LEAGUE (OPAL)

OPAL holds art sessions on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays from October to April, 9am to noon, in the SRAL main studio. There is no cost to participants – all instructors volunteer their time to help the artists. The group is open to all Art League members interested in pursuing their love of creating fine art with oil paints Any member who wants to learn more about oil painting is certainly welcome to attend the sessions – we would love to have you. For more information about the OPAL group go to Opal .

PASTEL GROUP

NOTE CHANGE The SRAL Pastel Group will be meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of each month during the summer in the main studio from 9 am - 12 pm. Our members meet to support each other, to work independently, to share their knowledge, tips and techniques and to make friends. Come join us and discover the great properties this medium has to offer. The following website does a fabulous job of introducing soft pastels - https://www.mallgalleries.org.uk/learning/resources/history-pastels Jean Schwafel will monitor this group during the summer.

PLEIN AIR

During the months of May through October there is no formal planning for paintouts. Instead, an occasional email is sent to those who are interested with details of

Page 12: MID-AUGUST ANNOUNCEMENTSAnnella enjoys painting and drawing in many mediums. Her favorite is watercolor. ... 1904, by Joseph Sharp Bottom left - Ranchos Church with Indians, by Ernest

the next planned time and location. If you wish to receive this information for summer plein air painting, please email your request to [email protected].

PORTRAIT

The portrait group will continue to meet with an informal format. We take turns posing for quick studies. Usually no critique or follow up photos. If someone finds a model, you will be notified so that you can bring different supplies. Plenty of room!

PRINT GUILD The first meeting of the Printmakers Guild in 2019-20 will be on September 26 at 9:30 AM in the SRAL Studio. We are looking for input on programs for the coming year. Please send any suggestions to Karen Keim at [email protected].

Tuesday Group The SRAL Tuesday Group meets on Tuesdays at 9:00AM in the Studio. This is a VERY informal group, all mediums are welcomed and encouraged, it's as much about socializing as it is painting. There is no leader for this group but we frequently hold friendly, very gentle critiques about 11:00AM. If you are looking for suggestions about what to do next on your painting, or just a little companionship, come join us.

WATERCOLOR

The Santa Rita Art League Watercolor Group meets on Friday mornings from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. We usually utilize the lighting and space in the large Media Room. However, on occasion we work in Studio A when the Media Room is used for classes or large meetings. We are a diversified group using a multitude of techniques from beginners to those who have honed their approach over the years. It is an informal fun gathering with no instruction or critiquing, although we often elect to ask for advice from fellow painters. SRAL has a wonderful section on Watercolors in it's library! Grab your watercolors and come join us! During the summer and early fall, Brian Bauman and Sharon Irish will oversee the group opening and closing the facility.
