Background

Rolls-Royce has developed a range of replication techniquesutilisingcompoundsdevelopedinconjunctionwiththesuppliertosolvemanycomplexanddifficultinspectionrequirements.Thereplica’sabilitytoprovidehighdefinitionsurfacereplicationtogetherwithbespokeapplicationandsurfacepreparationequipmentallowshighqualitysurfaceexaminationinremotelocations.These replicas can then be inspected in a laboratory providingahighqualityexaminationinalowdoseenvironment

Replication offers:

• Theabilitytoinspectinaccessiblesurfacesindirectlybyvisualandmicroscopictechniques,includinghighmagnificationScanningElectronMicroscopy.

• Theextractionofsurfaceparticlesbythereplicamaterial also provides a means of analysing surface contaminants.

• Theabilitytorecordsizemeasurementsanddefectlocation data in very high dose areas.

• Apermanentrecordofthesiteofinterest, allowingdefect monitoring over time by comparison with previous replicas.

• Inairorunderwaterapplication.

• Elasticmaterialpropertiesallowingreplicationofcavities and other undercut geometries.

• Theabilitytoobtainmicrostructuralinformationfrommetallurgically prepared surfaces.

• Resolutionofsurfacetexturesto<1μmwhilstmaintainingexposuretoionisingradiationtolevelsthatareALARP.

Arangeofreplicationmedia,(bothputtyandacetate)areavailable to suit different applications. Replication materials are available with a range of viscosities and curing rates. For remote application this allows transport time for the material to the inspection site, over long distances when required.Compensationmayalsobemadeforplanttemperature.

Rolls-Royce metallurgy have the capability to replicate – inspect remote surfaces underwater.
