What is MESA?Since1970,Mathematics,EngineeringScienceAchievement(MESA)hashelpededucationallydisadvantagedstudentsinCaliforniatobecomeengineers,scientistsandothermath-basedprofessionalsurgentlyneededbyindustry.

MESAprovidesauniquecombinationofenrichmentactivities,hands-oncompetitions,coun-seling,academicsupport,industryinvolvement,andsupportivecommunityenvironment.Studentsareservedatthepre-college,communitycollegeanduniversitylevels.MESAfunc-tionswithapartnershipofallthemajorpublicandprivateeducationsystemsinCaliforniaandwithindustry.

FundedbytheStateofCalifornia,MESAisadministeredbytheUniversityofCalifornia,withfundingallocatedfromUCandtheCaliforniaCommunityCollegeChancellor’sOffice.MESAleveragesitsstatefundingtogarneradditionalfinancialandresourcesupportfromprivateandpublicsources.

Who does MESA serve? MostMESAstudentsarefirstintheirfamiliestoattendcollege.Mostarelow-incomeandattend(orgraduatedfrom)low-performingschools.WithMESA’ssupport,thesestudentsexcelinscience,technology,engineeringandmath(STEM)studies—someofthemostdif-ficultacademicsubjects.

What makes MESA successful?Overits44-yearhistory,MESAhasestablishedbenchmarks,identifiedbestpractices,andrefineditsmodeltoensurethemosteffectiveSTEMprogramforitsstudents.Thiscontinu-ousimprovementapproachhasresultedinahighlysuccessfulmodelforSTEMsuccess.
