The symphonic performance delights listenersby Richard Gilley
We are very fortunate in Merrick tohave two superb musical artists whohave given the musical world manygreat moments in music.
Cecelia Gniewek Brauer, a celebratedpianist, a member of the MetropolitanOpera who has given many solo key-board performances all over the countryand Judith Lorenz Witmer, a wonderfulviolinist, who has played with the LaScala Opera Orchestra in Milan Italyand in many symphonic groups in theNew York-New Jersey area. Both musi-cians were heard recently as members of
the Merrick Symphony ChamberOrchestra which performed in theFreeport Memorial Library to a capacityaudience.
Conductor for this concert wasVincent Lionti from the MetropolitanOpera Orchestra, who also conducts theWestchester Youth orchestra. MaestroLionti took this Chamber Orchestrathrough all the pieces with great sensi-tivity and panache.
Deborah Song, a graduate of theEastman School of Music and currentlyenrolled in a two year program at theJuilliard School of Music was the violinsoloist who performed the Winter por-
tion of the “Four Seasons” by Vivaldiwith electrifying technique and virtuosi-ty. She also performed the solos in the“Serenade for Strings” by Joseph Sukand played the nostalgic encore “SchoenRosmarin” by Fritz Kreisler to a stand-ing ovation. This program also includedthe famous “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 1”by Bizet, the vivacious “DivertimentoNo. 1” by Mozart, and from the impres-sionistic period the “Pavane” by Ravel.
The program turned to a lighter moodand the Orchestra performed music from“Phantom of the Opera,” and from thefilm “Mondo Cane” arranged by R.Hayman which may have made some of
the audience’s hearts beat faster fromhearing all the lush harmonies written inthese pieces. Last on the program wasthe “Radetsky March” by Strauss Sr.Maestro Lionti gave the audience cueswhen to clap to the rhythm.
When it ended, the audience gaveloud cheers and another standing ova-tion to this wonderful ChamberEnsemble. Traditionally, the “RadetskyMarch” is performed on New Year’sDay by the Vienna Philharmonic. Nextconcert at the Freeport Library will beOctober 29. Your seat will be waiting foryou.

meandering around merrick2011 year in review
by Erin Donohue
It’s always interesting for us at Merrick Life to take a look back at theyear that was. For me personally my reflections have come full circle. Ibegan the year just having been announced as Merrick’s Woman of the Year(with Lenny Heide named Man of the Year) and now I will pass the title onto MeMe Wanderman, a 30-plus-year advocate for the school district’s chil-dren and library volunteer. The 2012 Man of the Year is Al Lage who sup-ports many Merrick organizations as well as helping the chamber of com-merce run the midway at its festivals.
Here is a review of of other stories we published. Details of many ofthese stories can be found on our website at www.merricklife.com
In January, Layna Christon’s dad had taken ill and she came to visit her90-year-old North Merrick mom. Layna suffered a heart attack while tak-ing a neighborhood walk. “Overwhelmed,” she recalled, she sat down onthe curb. Lucky for her, the Sena family’s dog, Jenny, wanted to go outside.
Soon after, the dog alerted the family to Mrs. Christon’s conditionand the family tended to her until they were able to get her in an ambu-lance to the hospital.
Al and Tot Barthel celebrated 70 years of marriage.Michelle Manfrede of Merrick ended 2010 as overall high point
gymkhana Grand Champion of the Islip Horsemen’s Association.Eighteen-year-old Mepham student Erin Clare Malloy-McArdle was
killed in January at Windham Mountain ski resort when she left a ski trailshe was on and collided with a tree.
The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives TV show stopped atthe Pit Stop on Sunrise Highway.
Merrick’s Robbie Rosen was on TV, too. He made it all the way toHollywood on “American Idol” only to face a loss in a sing-off. He did notmake the final show but Merrick enjoyed following his journey and theemergence of its latest star. Merrick Life followed his many subsequent per-formances including his debut of an original song at an Islander game andhis performance at the Merrick’s KidsFest. Robbie has generously sharedhis talents with many groups and can often be found pursuing his musiccareer as he prepares to graduate from Calhoun High School.
In February we wrote that baby Kasey Ann Devlin of Merrick was bornduring a snowstorm on January 12, making her the winner of our First Babyof the Merricks contest. If you know anyone due to have a baby soon, theyshould enter soon after the baby is born. Our generous merchants are giv-ing away great prizes. See contest prizes on pages 10 and 11.
Calhoun Colts football players Nick Marcello and Coleman Meiersigned to Division 1 schools.
55-year-old Merrick resident Doug Oggeri survived a heart attackthanks to his 18-year-old daughter, Colleen. He suffered the incident aftershoveling snow.
News 12 meteorologist and Merrick resident Bill Korbel renewedtheir vows with his wife Sharon after 38 years of marriage, at TownHall in Hempstead.
The Calhoun Varsity Kickline Team did an excellent job at the 2011Long Island Scholastic Championship Kickline Competition. Theyearned First Place for their Pom routine and Second Place for their HighKick Routine, in the AAA division.
The threat of the elimination of municipal bus routes in the Merricks wasannounced in March. Fast forward to present day, a new bus company will

Some of life’s events are so importantthat, if we had a choice, we would wantfamily or friend to help us with them. For most of us, somethingas personal and as important as a funeral, is one of those events.Since our beginnings in 1900, four generations of the Kearnsfamily and our well qualified dedicated staff have been buildingrelationships with families that often go back three and four gen-erations. It’s facts like this that confirm for us the value of a localfamily owned and managed funeral home.
Questions we've been asked...You say your funeral home is family
owned and managed. Why is that important?
As a privately owned funeral home, we have a local, communityfocus and not a “big business”, corporate approach to what we do.The “bottom line” doesn’t drive us. Service and satisfaction ofeach family that calls us for help is what we’re about. At the sametime, we have the resources, experience and networking ability toassist families wherever and whenever death occurs, regardless of the complications.
In a word, we believe that when death touches a family, local independent ownership has the potential to make the “best fit”.

Ban drivers from using cellphones
To Merrick Life: The National Transportation Safety
Board’s recommendation that states banall drivers from using any portable elec-tronic devices while driving is a positivestep that would help make our roads safer.
Research has shown that distracteddriving greatly increases the likelihood ofgetting into a car crash. Some researchhas shown that distracted drivers are moreimpaired than those who are drunk orunder the influence of drugs.
According to AAA, distracted drivingcauses between 4,000 and 8,000 crashes aday and contributes to as many as half ofthe six million crashes nationwide eachyear. That’s more than enough reasons torequire drivers to focus their attentionsolely where it belongs: on the roadahead.
As chairman of the New York StateSenate’s Transportation Committee, Isupport the NTSB’s recommendation andbelieve that New York State shouldstrongly consider adopting a law whichreflects it.
