Mentoring: A Brief HistoryIt was Homer's classic tale The Odyssey that first gave rise to the concept of mentor (Homer.). The story sees its hero Ulysses setting off to wage war. However, before he does, he leaves his royal household, and specifically the responsibility for providing guidance to his son Telemachus, in the hands of his trusted friend Mentor.
By the late 1700's the word mentor became a noun in the English language meaning ‘wise counsellor’. In our modern usage, a mentor is a more experienced person who acts as a trusted friend, counsellor, or teacher (mentorship n.d.).

Situational Mentoring
is defined as a one-time meeting or discussion that enables an individual to learn and seek guidance from a more experienced person who can pass on relevant knowledge and experience. The purpose of flash mentoring is to provide a valuable learning opportunity for less experienced individuals while requiring a limited commitment of time and resources for more experienced individuals serving as mentors. While mentors and mentees can mutually decide to meet again after their flash mentoring session, the commitment is to participate only in the initial meeting.
Flash Mentoring
Participants from all levels of the organization propose and own a topic. They then meet in groups to discuss the topic, which motivates them to grow and become more knowledgeable. Flash mentoring is ideal for job shadowing, reverse mentoring, and more.
