Men’s & Women’s Wrestling History
2017-2018 OUA Championships: Men - bronze, Women – bronze U SPORTS Championships: Men – 4th, Women 7th In wrestling, mental strength is just as important as physical strength. Gryphons’ head coach Doug Cox wanted his athletes to approach their 2017-18 season as if tournaments were a reward for their hard work and not something to fear. Guelph’s experienced team, led by decorated stars like Elvir Uzunovic and Gracelynn Doogan, went into the OUA schedule confident and ready to perform. The Gryphons held their spot in the national rankings throughout the year and by the time they hosted the Guelph Open, the performances were ramping up. Uzunovic (61kg), and third-year athletes Alexander Chaves (70kg) and Chelsey Sicard (55kg), each won gold on their home mat. The medals continued to pile up at the OUA Championship in St. Catharines, as Guelph took four silvers, four bronzes and two
impressive golds from Doogan (82kg) and two-sport athlete Job Reinhart (100kg). Reinhart, a star linebacker on the Gryphon football team, is still relatively new to wrestling but after defeating Brock’s Ignatius Pitt, he was crowed Most Outstanding Wrestler at the OUA Championship. The women’s and men’s teams each finished third in the overall standings. Guelph was unable to achieve the same level of success at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championship hosted by Algoma University, finishing fourth on the men’s side and seventh in the women’s standings, though only 10 wrestlers made the trip. Doogan and Chaves took silver medals, while Sicard and Uzunovic, wrestling in his final collegiate match, won in their finales for a pair of well-earned bronze medals. 2015-16 OUA Championship Result: Women 2nd; Men 3rd
CIS Championship Result: Women 3rd; Men 4th
The Gryphons men’s team returned to the podium at the OUA Championships after a one year absence by finishing 3rd in the team standings at the one-
day championship event. A total of 8 medals were won by Gryphons on the men’s side at the OUA Championships which was hosted by Algoma
University of Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Leading the way for U of G was a pair of gold medalists in Oren Furmanov (54kg) and Tyson Frost (120kg).
Two weeks later at the CIS Championships in St. Catharines, Furmanov and Frost would strike gold once again while helping the Gryphons finish 4th in
the overall team standings. A total of eight wrestlers from the Gryphons men’s team competed at the CIS Championships, with Geordie Watkins
narrowly missing out on the podium after being defeated by Memorial's Dennis Sutton in the Men's 100kg bronze medal match.
The women’s wrestling team proved to be a threat in the conference and beyond during the 2015-16 season finishing with a team OUA silver and CIS
bronze. At OU’s the Gryphons were unable to secure an individual title but their second-place team finish was earned on the backs of several strong
showings. The team came close to the summit in a few weight classes and in the end, finished with four silvers. Those medals went to Natassya
Lu (48kg), Jade Papke (51kg), Alison Carrow (67kg) and Gracelynn Doogan (72kg). The CIS Championships were a huge success as they earned three
individual medals powering them to a third place team finish. Third-year Alison Carrow capped off a terrific season, successfully defending her national
title in the 67kg weight class and was named a CIS First-Team All-Canadian. Jade Papke (51kg) and Gracelynn Doogan (72kg) rounded out the team’s
medalists as they took home silvers and were named Second Team All-Canadians.

2009-2010 Championship Result: OUA – Men 3rd; Women 4th; CIS – Men 6th; Women 10th
The Gryphon men’s wrestling season was highlighted by the team’s third straight bronze medal finish at the OUA Championships. At the OUA’s, Lakehead and Brock ended up tied for the team title with 59 points, while the Gryphons trailed by only six points with 53 points. This was the closest Guelph has come to capturing the team title
in many years. The Gryphons earned a total of three gold medals. Leading the way on the men’s side was fifth-year Kyle Grant (Whitby, ON) who captured gold in the
130kg weight class for the second straight season. Rookie standout Jake Jagas (Kitchener, ON) had an exceptional meet and won the 72kg weight class and was named the OUA male rookie of the year. Meanwhile Kevin Iwasa-Madge (Milton, ON) rounded out the gold medals for the Gryphons, winning the 65kg weight class. All three were
named first team OUA all-stars. Other OUA medalists included Scott Wolowich (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) who won silver in the 61kg and Mike Katsilas and Mathieu
DesChatelets (Sturgeon Falls, ON) finishing with bronze medals in the 76 and 82kg events. At the CIS Championships, the men’s team finished sixth and earned three individual medals. Rookie Jake Jagas continued his impressive rookie campaign winning the 72kg crown and was named the CIS rookie of the year. Other medalists for the
Gryphons included Kyle Grant with a silver medal in the 130kg weight class and Kevin Iwasa-Madge with a bronze in the 65kg event. Grant was also named the R.W. Pugh
Fair Play Award recipient.
The women’s wrestling team finished fourth at the OUA Championships for the second straight season. The Gryphons finished strong considering a number of late season
injuries that crippled them and only allowed Guelph to send four wrestlers to the OUA’s. Leading the way was third-year Allison Leslie (Fergus, ON) who won a silver medal in the 67kg weight class and was named a second team OUA all-star. Two other Gryphons won medals and qualified for the CIS Championships including Laura
Christensen (Toronto, ON) and Hilary Rafla (Guelph, ON) who both finished third in the 55 and 63kg events. At the CIS Championships, the women’s team finished tenth.

2005-2006 With the mixture of veterans and freshman in the line-up, the Gryphons were looking to the veterans to lead with experience. Unfortunately, late season
injuries kept the Gryphon men from sending some of their strong veteran wrestlers. Leading the way was Jamie Cox who continued his OUA winning
streak by capturing his second straight OUA gold medal in the 130 kg weight class. Corey Hewitt captured a bronze in the 76 kg weight class. Brandon
Eyer, last year’s OUA MVP and gold medallist at 54 kg, wrestled up a weight class in the 57 kg division and brought home bronze. Guelph finished a
disappointing 5th in the standings, one point behind Western. The men sent 3 athletes to the CIS Championships. Jamie Cox was the top performer as he
dominated his opponent and won the bronze medal bout with a spectacular throw.

1986-1987 With a very young team this year, the Gryphon wrestlers found the going tough but still managed a 5th place finish at the OUAA finals. There were
strong individual performances as well, as both Adarsh Prashad and Rob Pafford placed 3rd in their respective weight classes while John Klompmaker
finished 2nd in the 95+ kg event. John qualified for the CIAU Championships in Montreal where he placed 6th.

1984-1985 The wrestling Gryphons again had another banner year as no less than four Guelph wrestlers took individual titles at the CIAU Championships. Chris
Crooks won the 76 kilo event, while Doug Cox, Gavin Carrow and Mitch Mason won the 86, 95 and 95+ kilo classes. As a team, the Gryphons finished
only one point behind co-champions McMaster and Concordia. While the streak of five consecutive OUAA titles came to an end, it was another highly
successful season as the wrestlers won more weight classes at the national championships than they had previously.

1983-1984 The Gryphon wrestlers captured an unprecedented fifth consecutive OUAA Title and fell just five points shy of taking their third consecutive CIAU
Title. Peter Domarchuk and Gavin Carrow both won their weight classes at the Ontario and Canadian Championships and the team turned in a strong
performance in each weight class. Chris Crooks placed second in the National Finals while Ken Putt and Mitch Mason each took bronze medals. It goes
without saying that it was another very successful year for Coach Londo lacovelli and the wrestlers as they brought further distinction to the University.

1982-1983 A fourth consecutive OUAA Championship (seventh in ten years) again underlined our claim to be Canada's best wrestling program. Four individual
champions anchored the Gryphons season which included impressive showings at the Michigan and Guelph Opens. Even more impressive was the fact
that all four winners claimed their initial championships highlighting the depth of our program.
The Gryphons ended their season in style as Chris Crooks, Ken Bradford and Peter Domarchuk captured individual gold metals to lead Guelph to its'
third consecutive National title.

1979-1988 The Wrestling Gryphons hosted the OUAA Championships, but played poor hosts in recapturing the Ontario title from the Western Mustangs, It was a
close decision however, as the Gryphons won by 1% points. A number of the Gryphons represented the OUAA at the national meet, with Wayne
Brightwell taking a Canadian championship.
