MEDIA INFORMATIONWilmington Blue Rocks (9-10) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals

vs.Myrtle Beach Pelicans (10-8) Carolina League Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs

Game No. 20 • Home Game No. 10 • Frawley Stadium • Thursday, April 30, 2015 • 6:35 p.m.

PITCHER’S DUEL ON THE ROCKS: Frawley Stadium was home to a great pitcher’s duel between Eric Skoglund and Jonathan Martinez on Wednesday night, and when the dust cleared, Myrtle Beach took advantage of two late runs to defeat the Blue Rocks 2-1. With the loss, the Rocks missed out on a chance to get back over the .500 mark, dropping back to 9-10, while Myrtle Beach snapped their four-game losing streak. Mauricio Ramos produced the lone run of the game for the Rocks, which was his second in the series. A squeeze bunt by Carlos Penalver and a single by Mark Zagunis in the eighth inning proved to be the dif-ference for the Pelicans though.

NOT EXACTLY WHAT WE ALL EXPECTED: Coming into the series, The Blue Rocks and Pelicans were first and second respectively in the Carolina League in batting. Both offenses have not enjoyed that type of succes thus far in this series, though, as there have been a total of eight runs scored the last two nights. The Rocks went 13-for-64 (.203) at the plate on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Pelicans went 14-for-65 (.215) over that same stretch. Despite the struggles, Wilmington is still on top of the Carolina League in batting with a .255 mark.

SKOGLUND PITCHING LIKE A PROSPECT: Wilmington starter Eric Skoglund went seven innings on Wednesday night, making him the first Blue Rock to finish the seventh frame this season. The previous high was six innings, a record held by three pitchers on the staff. Skoglund himself went six frames in his last start, a road contest against the Frederick Keys, dur-ing which he got his first loss of the year. The lefty also set a personal season-best in strikeouts on Wednesday, fanning five Pelicans. The mark also tied a career-high. Skoglund now leads the Blue Rocks with 24 innings pitched this season.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING: Frank Schwindel recorded yet another extra-base hit on Wednesday, pushing his total to eight on the season, all of which have been doubles. The first baseman has now produced a two-bagger in three consecutive games, and has an over-all hit streak of seven games. Earlier in the year, Schwindel logged an eight-game hitting streak, which tied Ramon Torres for a team best. He has hit safely in 15 of his 18 games played in 2015, and is currently the team leader in doubles and total bases.

MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH: On Sunday against the Frederick Keys, Zane Evans had a monster day at the plate, blasting two home runs and producing five RBIs, both career bests for Evans. He had a golden opportunity to connect on a third homer in as many games in the fourth inning, but Mark Zagunis robbed him of a solo dinger by snagging Evans’s drive over the left-field wall. Evans is still the Blue Rocks leader in homers on the year with three.

THEY SAID IT, MANAGER BRIAN BUCHANAN: “It was definitely a pitcher’s duel. Both of them [did a good job]. [Eric] Skoglund did a great job for us. We pushed across a run there in the seventh but [it didn’t stand up]. It was just a well-pitched game, we just let it get away from us there...I thought we swung the bats well. Better than the five hits we (had) tonight. We hit the ball well tonight, we just couldn’t find the holes. They made some nice plays on us too. That happens. To be honest with you, I thought we swung the bats really well...[Mauricio] Ramos got a big RBI there. I wish we could have added on a couple more but it was one of those types of games where the pitchers are doing well. You’re trying to scrap one or two [runs] here and it ends up being a 2-1 game...I do [think the talent is pretty even throughout the League]. We play a lot of close games here. We’ve been walked off four times. I think we’re right there in the mix with the whole league. In the past, I think if you play .500 baseball you’ve got a good chance to go to the playoffs. These guys are a good team. We’ve got a good team, we’ve got good pitching, we get some timely hitting, and our defense is great.”

Today’s Starters

WIL: RHP Yender Caramo (0-1, 3.00)vs.

FRE: RHP Daury Torrez (2-1, 3.78)

Yender Caramo is tonight’s starting pitcher for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Caramo is a native of San Felix, Bolivar, Venezuela, and was an undrafted free agent signing by the Royals on November 22, 2010. The righty has pitched in four games this year, but has only started one. That lone start came on April 19 against Frederick, as he went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out four at Frawley Stadium, but did not record a decision. His most recent appearance took place on April 24 at Frederick, throwing four innings out of the bullpen, giving up two runs and six hits with three strikeouts. With tonight’s start, Caramo will already be halfway to his total from a season ago, as he appeared in 35 games for the Rocks last year, but started only four of them. In those four starts, he was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 total innings.

Daury Torrez gets the ball tonight for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Torrez was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Chicago Cubs on December 22, 2010. The native of Esperanza, Dominican Republic enters the season as the 30th ranked prospect in the Cubs farm system according to Baseball America. Torrez has already seen the Rocks this year, having started against them on April 10. The Rocks saddled Torrez with the loss, as he went 4.2 innings, yielding six earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five. Zane Evans and the since-promoted Bubba Starling took Torrez deep in the contest. The righty was brilliant his last time out on April 23 against Winston-Salem, tossing seven innings of shutout ball, allowing only four hits while fanning a single batter. With tonight’s start, Torrez will have faced both the Dash and the Blue Rocks twice.

PELICAN BRIEFS:

New Look Pelicans: The Myrtle Beach Pelicans enter theirfirst season as a farm team for the Major League ChicagoCubs after spending the last four seasons as an affiliate ofthe Texas Rangers. The Pelicans will be one of three teamsin the Carolina League affiliated with a National Leagueclub along with Carolina (Atlanta Braves) and Potomac(Washington Nationals).

Different Team, Same Goal: The Pelicans, despite a newaffiliation, will look to build upon the success the franchisehas had in recent years. Last season, under Manager JoeMikulik, the Pelicans finished the season with the bestrecord in the Carolina League (82-56). They fell short in theMills Cup Championship Series, falling to the eventual C.L.Champs in Potomac. They also finished in first in the C.L.South in 2013, only to lose in the playoffs to the eventualMills Cup winners in Salem.

Making A Name: After coming to Chicago in the trade thatsent Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland, out- fielder Billy McKinney will look to make a name for him- self in the Cubs organization as he starts out the season inMyrtle Beach. McKinney is listed as the sixth prospect inthe Chicago organization according to Baseball America.McKinney spent all of last season in Advanced-A for boththe Stockton Ports and the Daytona Tortugas. He batted acombined .264 with the two clubs, driving in 69 runs with11 homers. In 51 games for Daytona, he compiled a .390on-base percentage. A key question for McKinney will bethe health of his shoulder, as soreness limited him to DHduty down the stretch in 2014.

Trade Chips Panning Out: Another mid-season trade in2014 the Cubs benefited from brought them another topprospect as they picked up catcher Victor Catarini in a tradethat sent Emilio Bonifacio and James Russell to Atlanta.According to Baseball America, Catarini is projected as the13th prospect in the Cubs organization. Catarini is stilllearning to catch full-time after the making the transitionfrom the outfield, but scouts are impressed with his above-average arm, which helped him throw out 32 percent ofbasestealers at Low-A in 2014. Adding to his value offen- sively, Catarini is a switch-hitter with a great eye. In 58games at Rookie-Level Danville in 2013, Catarini walked39 times helping him on his way to a .415 on-base percent- age. He was originally a second round pick by Atlanta in2013.

Catcher’s Wild: Though listed as an outfielder in 2015,Cubs’ 15th prospect accoring to Baseball America MarkZagunis is another top prospect who could see some time atcatcher for the Pelicans. Zagunis has exhibited above-aver- age speed in his time in pro ball, which is part of the reasonhe makes the transition to outfield in 2015. Last year,Zagunis moved through three levels ending up at Low-AKane County where he hit .280 in 14 games. According toBaseball America, Zagunis has an advanced approach to hit- ting, which many scouts see translating favorably to theMajor Leagues in the future. In the Midwest League play- offs, he hit a staggering .429 (12-for-28) with two homerunsas the DH, leading Kane County to a League title.

Caramo on Caramo (with translation from Abraham O. Nunez):“My goal this year is to continue to work hard and help the team to win ballgames anyway possible. I just want to keep getting better everytime I go out there so I can continue to play the game. Everytime I step on the mound I go out there with a prupose. I’m a hard worker and I want to continue that. Last year I pitched a lot, and one of the things I did was maintaining my stretching and my workouts because when you’re in the bullpen you don;t know when you’ll be called upon to pitch. I always liked Josh Beckett when I was coming up. I love his demeanor and the way he goes about his business on the mound. I always looked up to him.”

Rico on Rico (with translation from Abraham Nunez): “I’ve got some personal goals, but mainly I try to take every opportunity they give me to pitch and try to make the most of it. I try to do the best that I can to help the Blue Rocks win some games this year…[The Pirates and Royals organizations] are the same, basically. I don’t see much of a difference when it comes down to the routines and rules. I like both…I had to work hard last year with the workload that I got. I had to stretch out mentally because it was a grind everyday. I worked a lot harder mentally to stay focused because of the amount of innings I pitched. I was tired sometimes, but mentally I was ready for it and I was able to get through it…[Brian Buchanan] is a great guy to play for; the way he manages guys and pushes his players…[I shape my game after] Randy Johnson.”

(I’m) just trying to getback into good hitting form where I was my first professional season. I definitely was a better hitter than I should have been last year. I just need to get back in a groove, and really work on just being a team player, and getting the runs in when they’re due. (I’m) trying to get around 80 RBI’s this year, and also I really want to improve my catching which I’ve been working on a lot in spring training... “It’s not mechanical, it’s more of pitch selection, just finding the right pitches to hit. Last year I tried to hit everything, and that’s not going to work out. I just need to find my pitch, and attack it and not miss it... “I definitely enjoyed college. I’m glad I chose college first. It definitely helped me mature a lot, because I knew out of high school I wasn’t ready to be on a bus 24 (hours) seven (days a week) riding around and playing 140 games. It just wasn’t a lifestyle I was ready for, and I wanted to start my degree, and I’ve got three years finished, so I definitely enjoyed it, and I probably would never change it for anything.”

I definitely relaxed more when I was in Lexington and I’ll definitely be bringing that this year...The travel is pretty good [in the Carolina League]. The longest bus ride is 10 hours but it’s to Myrtle Beach so everybody likes that. I like Delaware; good people, great food…it’s always good to travel around. It helps out the family a lot because they get to come down and watch games whenever they want...(The 2014 Carolina/California League All-Star game) was a great experience being here in Wilmington in front of all the same fans. Me, only living about an hour away, my family and friends came and got to see the game. A lot of the players in that game are definitely going to be playing in the big leagues someday so it was a cool experience to meet some of those guys and play beside them...I shortened my swing up a little bit. The first half of last year I struggled and the second half I kind of put things together and figured out who I am as a hitter. Hopefully I can keep going forward from where I ended up last year.”

As long as you’re playing hard and on time, you’re not going to have many problems. I enjoy playing for him and I like him as a guy as well...I struggled with everything; it’s baseball. Everything is hard. I worked on a little bit of everything; hitting the fastball, curveballs, staying through pitches, reads in the outfield, and base running. I literally tried to work on every aspect of my game this offseason... I don’t know (what to expect from transition from Rookie level to Adv.-A). I was only in [Burlington] for one year so I don’t know what kind of transition I’m look-ing at. I’m not really worried about it. I’m just going to come here and play hard. I’ll control what I can control.”

I think that’s something that will help carry over to this ballpark, especially with how big it is. You’ve got to really focus on your approach and not try to do too much here or else you are going to fly out a lot, so I think that’s something I picked up in Idaho that will definitely help out here...(Jumping from Rookie level to Adv.-A) was a great accomplish-ment. Coming out of Spring Training, I felt like I swung the bat well down in Arizona. I got here by just taking it a day at a time, trying to be profes-sional, working on my routine, and just see-ball-hit-ball and keep it as simple as possible. I plan to follow that. It’s still baseball no matter where you’re playing at...One of my favorite players of all-time is Edgar Martinez. I try to model my approach [after him]. He was a good gap-to-gap hitter and hit for average. If I hit like that I’d be plenty happy with my career.”

I’ve lived in San Diego and I currently live in Salt Lake City...The biggest thing is picking a rou-tine and sticking to it. For me, I try to have an approach of hitting the ball the other way and to swing down, hit groundballs and line drives. If you pop the ball up you have no chance of getting a hit so I try to stick to that routine every-day and, also, just take it one day at a time...This is my first time in Delaware. I haven’t been able to get around very much since I just got my car on Tuesday). I was able to meet some of the fans today; great people. I’m excited to get this year started.”
