How do magazine front covers use denotation and connotation to attract their intended audience?

The magazine I have chosen is entitled musicology magazine. I chose this magazine due to the fact that I read it quite frequently and also my group were momentarily featured on it for a competition,

promoting young talented musical acts.

In my opinion I believe the intended audience for this magazine is for boys, as well as girls ranging from the ages of 15-20 as the language used is sophisticated also it’s quite a lengthy magazine

including 50pages. As a result of this it wouldn’t be suitable for younger teenage readers as they wouldn’t be able to comprehend the language used. Another reason why I believe it is for both

genders and age ranges from 15-20 is due to the image used, the image used for this specific issue is of Keri Hilson. Keri Hilson is an upcoming R & B singer/songwriter she is extremely popular with boys

and girls. Boys because she is an attractive young lady, and for girls because she is a role model.

In this magazine there are a variety of vibrant colours used, for example pink and yellow. By using vibrant colours it attracts people to buy and read the magazine as the colours attract the possible customers. Also due to the fact the intended audience is youths musicology magazine use vibrant

colours, as opposed to dull colours in order to attract their customers. The font is stylish and sleek. A range of fonts are used, for the masthead “music” isn’t in bold, however “ology” is in bold. For the

text that has “Keri Hilson” the font is as if she wrote her name herself this is extremely powerful as in

The image of Keri Hilson is used to attract potential buyers as she is looked up to by females and males find her extremely attractive so who better to have on the front page. Similarly in most magazines they have an attractive female used to sell a product even in female magazines they have an attractive female on front who women aspire to be like.

Similarly to all magazines they have a masthead that also has the main article and other articles. Also the text is vibrant, in order to attract people to buy the magazine.

Similar to a few magazines it has a competition and a few lucky readers can win stylish yet sleek headphones.

her image she is holding a pen. Based on the colours you would immediately assume that the magazine is for females, due to the pink and yellow, however this is not the case.

The layout is simple yet effective Keri Hilson is the centred figure as she is the main focus, due to the effect she has on the youth boys and girls as she is an iconic figure. Also the masthead of the magazine is in the top right corner, however the image of Keri Hilson is situated behind the

masthead of the magazine showing the importance of the masthead. Also the text of “Keri Hilson” is positioned on top of Keri Hilson and in smaller writing it says “don’t hate me” which is the main article in the magazine. Also the other articles that are featured are located in the bottom left

corner. Finally musicology magazine place a competition at the bottom and repetitively use the word “win” this will attract people to buy the magazine as everybody likes to win something. Also the

prize is headphones from this I can infer that the readers are music fans and are not an older audience as if it was an older audience there would be a more sophisticated prize up for grabs.
