How to hatch a Medaka Egg: Timmy
Medaka Egg Project By Morgan McFarland
Timmy: Japanese Medaka Egg
• As I was laid by my mother with hundreds of brothers and sisters, I rolled around in my egg.
• I am being examined by Morgan McFarland and Alysha Bridge.
• Its hard to tell what’s happening next except for when they talk about how I keep moving to different stages.
Approximately 20 hours old
• I am growing very quickly, I am moving through stages like crazy!
• This is me at 20 hours old, this is about stage 16.
• ¾ of my yolk is covered by the blastoderm and has expanded to the equator of the yolk sphere.
52 Hours: Stage 24
• I now have an early heartbeat which pulses about 40 to 60 beats per minute.
• It’s kind of weird being in this narrow tube that is completely ventral to my head.
• I don’t have any circulation yet though although blood islands group on my yolk.
74 Hours: Stage 28
• Yay! I finally have pink blood. My heart is bent so that my ventricle is lying on my right side.
• I am now having about 136 heart beats per minute.
• My pink blood is pumping out of my heart through a tube.
102 Hours: Stage 30
• My urinary Bladder is seen slightly.
• My heartbeat is clearly seen with about 168 beats per minute.
• Ouch! I think I am “jabbing” myself in the eye with the end of my tail.
• OOOH! And I forgot to tell you, my pectoral fin is starting to move too.
• I’m getting excited, I think I’m going to hatch soon
168 Hours: Stage 34
• My heart rate is starting to slow down a little by having 124 beats per minute.
• My jaw is slightly moving and I’m starting to turn yellow.
• My tail is still poking me in the eye and I’m really getting irritated.
• Also, my dorsal fin is present; but not spotted as easily.
200 Hours: Stage 35
• You can see my spleen and mouth! My heart beats 136 per minute.
• My color intensity and initial shape are variable. My liver is also seen.
• My mouth is moving once in a while, and I have weird spots on my back.
• My yolk sac is devoid of pigment cells and I didn’t start to hatch yet. Maybe tomorrow!!
• I sure hope I hatch soon because I am getting sick of being squashed!
Over 200 Hours: End of Stage 35
• The only difference of my body from yesterday is that my spleen and other parts are getting more noticeable.
• I had 138 heart beats per minute!
• Everything else is the same except for I’m getting more and more anxious to get out of this egg!!
Day 12: Stage 36
• I was hatched!
• My owners were so happy today when I was swimming around.
• I was happier than they were because I was out of that crammed space in the egg!
• I wouldn’t stop moving around, so they couldn’t examine my heartbeat.
