Worthwhile sacrifice
I chose to study for an MBA at Surrey Business
School because I wanted to grow the charity
and I wanted to continue the work I was doing,
but make it bigger and better.
I enjoyed learning with people from all over
the world. On a course like this you feed offeach others experiences and knowledge.
Having such a varied class means we were able
to explore situations from different viewpoints.
Understanding the opportunities, limitations
and challenges of businesses across the world
really added relevance to the course. I have
enjoyed their company and made many and
new, life-long friends.
Studying at Surrey has given me much
more confidence in areas such as finance and
marketing strategies. I am always applyingwhat Ive learned because everything is relevant
aunched in Twickenham, Touraid provides
opportunities for disadvantaged children
across the world and uses sport to create
long-term links between communities
overseas and schools and clubs in the UK.
The first rugby tour was organised for children
from a Serbian orphanage, and the charity has
gone from strength to strength ever since.
I had been running the charity with little
or no business knowledge or training, having
been a teacher for 14years previously. I gained
a great deal of practical experience in the first
4-5years of working in the charity simply
by learning on the job. But business plans,
financial planning, stakeholder analysis,
communication plans, strategic alliances and
project planning were all new to me. I knew that
I needed to gain some theoretical knowledge
in these areas to really develop the charity, ensuring the best return on investment.

to running a business, which is essentiallywhat Im doing with touraid.
The module I was most worried about
was finance management due to my lack
of experience in the area. However, it turned
out to be the most enjoyable module.
The action case was a very rewarding module
as we were able to help a small international
charity with guidance on areas of protocol,
fundraising and management. This made
a real difference to the charity and lead
to tangible outcomes.
I also enjoyed the dreaded dissertation,
which enabled me to develop new models for
assessing charity interventions which I now use
weekly in my work with the charity. I believe
in sharing knowledge and best practice, and
my dissertation has been used many times with
small charities to ensure stakeholder support
that ultimately leads to positive outcomes.
The lecturers support and guidance in this
was fantastic and his contribution to focusing
the study area enabled a successful dissertation.
Taking an MBA is a big decision and youcant underestimate the commitment it takes,
but its a sacrifice worth making.
From strength to strength
For Andy, the bottom line is that the MBA
enabled him to help more disadvantaged
children.
The effects are felt so much wider than the
tour the good feeling spreads through each
school and each community we work in. The
MBA has given me the tools I need to continue
this, I have absolutely no regrets and Id
recommend it to anybody.
I set up touraid because I wanted to make
a difference. I loved teaching and was a deputy
headmaster before setting up the charity,
but I felt there was something more I could
do to help those who didnt have the same
chances as more privileged children.
Through Andys determination, the
charity has grown immensely and will soon
be celebrating its fifth birthday. The charity
has organised 54 tours for 850 children, some of whom are orphans or street children,
from places like Cambodia, Rwanda andTrinidad and Tobago.
Writing detailed yet concise development
plans that ensure all stakeholders are engaged
in new sustainable intervention projects is one
skill that has been a positive outcome of the
study. I was also able to use my dissertation,
Evaluating the Impact of Charity Interventions,
to carry out a full analysis of touraids work
in the first five years and to develop new tools
for all charities to assess their work. This has
been crucial to developing sustained support
for touraid.
Some of the skills I gained while studying for
an MBA have enabled me to develop key
partnerships with the third sector and governing
bodies which will ensure my charitys longevity.

and corporate finance sectors, says Professor
Elaine Ferneley, MBA and MPA director at MBS.
If more entrepreneurial avenues are
of interest to graduates then the marketing,
sales and negotiation skills training that they
gain will be of tremendous benefit in launching
into entrepreneurial ventures, she explains.
The common thread linking MBA candidates
is that they are all experienced professionals
with three or more years experience
in managerial roles. If you fill this quota, you are well placed to apply for an MBA.
Employer appeal
MBA applicants come from different industry
backgrounds, cultures and countries, and
it is this diversity which enhances students
learning. Teamwork and group projects
feature heavily on these courses and much
of the learning comes from collaboration
and networking with fellow students.

Business schools are seen as a reliable
source of skilled managers, andrecruiters have often studied at the
same institutions. This means they
understand the level of study and
focus required to complete an MBA.
The shared international networks,
experience and skill-sets that this
environment builds is what gives the
MBA its reputation and what makes
the qualification so desirable.
The Association of MBAs (AMBA)
Careers Survey2010 revealed that themedian business salary was 64,000
and the mean was 73,000. Those
surveyed were earning on average,
33% more immediately after their
MBA, 92% more three to five years
later, and 151% more six to ten years
after graduation.
Despite this, an MBA is not
an instant passport to success
and six-figure salaries. To climb
the career ladder quickly, you are
required to continue your personal
development beyond the course.
Accredited schools
If you are considering taking an MBA
and you meet the requirements as set
out by each school, your next step
will be applying to an accredited
institution. Accredited institutions
offer the highest quality programmes
as assessed and recognised by the
international standard set by the
AMBA.
Accreditation is not to be confused
with media rankings which are based
on a limited range of benchmarks,
unlike those set out by the AMBA.
Schools are assessed every five years
by a team of senior academics from
accredited programmes to ensure
the facilities, curriculum, faculty and
students are the best they can be.
After which they must be reassessed
to ensure that the quality standards
are maintained.
GMAT tests
As part of the application, many
business schools require you
to take a test, usually in the form
of the Graduate Management
Admissions Test (GMAT) and therewill be a minimum score needed
for admission. This demanding
computerised test assesses numerical
and written skills, so if you lack
confidence in these areas seek
help in preparing for the test
before you apply.

you can develop your business contacts in the
most suitable locations. The IMD Business
School in Switzerland is situated just 40 miles
away from Geneva, where companies such
as Nestl, Firmenich, Unilever and Novartis
have headquarters.
The benefits
In todays globalised business world, studyingfor an MBA outside of the UK will not only
develop your international outlook, but it will
allow you to understand wider international
viewpoints, too. It also helps to learn about
other cultural practices.
British citizen Bruce Cooper is one of AMBAs
Global AMBAssadors. He chose to study for his
MBA at EM Lyon Business School in France.
I gained a worldwide network established
within the class, a shared experience through
working with my cohort, the many businesstools presented by the professors and the
he multitude of backgrounds that
students bring to an MBA means there
could be up to 20 different nationalities
in any one classroom. Add in the fact
that youll be enjoying the benefits of a new
culture and language in a foreign land and
an MBA abroad is one of the most rewarding
postgraduate programmes around.
Lisa Piguet, associate director of MBA
admissions and marketing at the IMD Business
School in Lausanne, Switzerland, says, Ours
is an international business school, where
participants benefit from an international
faculty, classmates, projects and class content.
Switzerland itself is located in the heart
of Europe and many organisations have
chosen the country for their European
or global headquarters.

ability to know how to tackle almost any problem that
may arise in everyday work situations, explains Bruce.
UK candidates are well situated to apply for MBA
courses in other countries. All accredited programmes
are delivered in English and some schools in the UK have
campuses overseas. If they dont, most will have solid
links with other business schools abroad.
The Grenoble Graduate School of Business (GGSB),
for example, has its campus headquarters in France,
but has developed international networks to deliverMBAs in different locations. The institutions partnership
with the London School of Business and Finance
means you can take a GGSB MBA in Morocco, the USA
and Georgia to name a few.
Often, studying overseas gives you the chance
to be immersed in another language. Although initially
youll be out of your comfort zone, being surrounded
by different customs and a new language could make
studying abroad a more fulfilling experience, especially
if you organise yourself some language lessons.
The European School of Management and Technology(ESMT), which is based in Berlin, offers an intensive,
eight-week German language course for its future MBA
students. Beginning in October and finishing in December
before the programme starts, it is included in the cost
of tuition fees.
Costs and funding
Overseas MBAs will also differ in price compared to their
UK counterparts. INSEAD Business School, (which has
campuses in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi), currently
charges 58,000 Euros for its full-time MBA (January2013).
As in the UK, not all schools charge the same amount. At the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), Erasmus
University, the same course is 39,000 Euros. Such
a difference in price will heavily influence your decision,
so research each school and programme to ensure you
can afford any course you apply for.
Maryke Luijendijk-Steenkamp, director of marketing
and admissions at RSM, says that prospective candidates
should gain as much information as possible on any
MBA programme and the country it is based in.
Speaking to current students from the programme
is hugely beneficial especially those from the samecountry as you or with the same backgrounds. You should
ascertain if the MBA programme is giving you the return
on investment youre seeking.
Staying abroad
You will be entitled to study in your chosen country for
the full duration of your MBA programme under a student
visa (unless you are eligible to enter the country visa
free). If you then want to stay on after and look for work,
you will need to look into whether or not any visa
restrictions apply.
Students who wish to work in Switzerland after their
studies would need to ask their employer to sponsor them
for a work visa. Recruiters who come to IMD are looking
for potential future leaders for their companies and are
usually aware of the visa requirements, explains Lisa.
Maryke says RSM students can stay on and search for
work after graduation. Our participants are allowed
to stay for a year post-graduation on a search visa
while investigating employment options, and the
government has a beneficial tax ruling that allows
qualified expats huge tax benefits as an incentive
to attract and retain foreign talent. The RSM MBA is especially relevant for international
candidates wishing to work in Europe. Our track record
shows substantial placement of our candidates in Europe,
regardless of their national origins and professional
backgrounds, adds Maryke.

can attract the best and most aspiring managers
and funding also remains an attractive incentive
for potential candidates.
Take Manchester Business School (MBS),
for example. The MBS awards admission
scholarships from its annual fund of between5,000 and 20,000 to the most talented
business students from around the world.
In addition, it offers the Manchester Excellence
Scholarship to one student, which is worth
37,400 (the cost of full tuition fees).
Industry-specific scholarships are common
in business schools and they are in place
to acknowledge those with unique skill-sets,
by rewarding them with financial support.
For example, WBS offers full-time scholarships
to students who are likely to be in the top20% of the class.
ccording to the Association of MBAs
(AMBA), institutions in the UK offer
around 500 students the chance
of financial support, which ranges
from 1,000 to full course fees and living costs.
Overall, AMBA-accredited business schoolsprovide scholarships in the region of 4million.
Its easy to see why students require financial
support to study an MBA. The full-time,
12-month course at Warwick Business School
(WBS) for the 2012-13 academic year, costs
30,000. To undertake the full-time programme
at London Business School (LBS) it costs
57,500 for 15-21 months of study.

Some scholarships for our full-

the University of Warwick Graduate

generalist Masters programmes
at WBS.
Candidates who achieve highly,
demonstrate academic excellence
and pass admission and Graduate
Management Admissions Test
(GMAT), will also be considered
for scholarships.
Alternative funding
If you dont manage to secure funding
via a scholarship, there are alternative
methods to paying for your MBA.
Bank loans, personal savings and
arranging for your employer to help
are all feasible options. Organisations
such as local employers are known
to sponsor scholarships through
business schools, (students are eligible
for this funding after they have been
accepted on to courses).
The Foreign and Commonwealth

There are over 700 Chevening

Internships
Obtaining a paid internship
is now commonplace for students
on MBA courses.
Many employers will use this
as a way of vetting future MBA
graduates for management positions
within their organisations.
The financial cost and funding
dilemma of an MBA is cushioned
by the many universities thatincorporate paid internships. Offering
direct work experience (investment
banks are popular providers of such
placements) is great preparation for
individuals with one eye on the
future job market.
The WBS full-time MBA programme
includes the requirement to undertake
a salaried, 10 to 12-week consultancy
project. As would be expected by an
MBA student, it doesnt stop there. We find that many of our
participants take up three-month
internships over the summer period
and use this time to transition into
the workplace after course
completion, says Dr Shulver.
It can be tough combining a
dissertation and MBA assignments,
along with an internship, but if youre
seriously considering an MBA then
be aware; for sponsoring companies,
it is fast becoming the most common
way in which to hire graduates.

come from up to 120 countries across all
campuses, and benefit from being able to make
connections with more than 34,000 alumni
across each of the exchange schools.
Setting goals
Business schools are selective about their
applicants and expect high-quality degrees
from highly regarded universities. Dont forget
that prior business experience is fundamental.
A positive and impressive work history may,
however, be held in higher regard that a degree,so check each schools entry requirements.
Setting both short-term and long-term goals
in relation to your business aspirations and
reasons for studying will help you decide on the
type of MBA you choose. Do you want to study
part time or full time? Will you be able to attend
lectures or will you have to study at a distance?
Full-time general MBA courses generally
last for one year. One of the obvious benefits
of a general MBA is that if you were to switch
careers, most of the skills you have learnedcould be applied to any business role.
he standard and most comprehensivetype of MBA gives students the flexibility
to customise the programme depending
on their academic and professional
interests through a variety of elective subjects.
Programmes are concerned with applying
the theory of academic models to real-life
scenarios, as well as fine-tuning students soft
skills such as teamwork, time management
and organisational skills.
Youll essentially be experiencing a vocational
course with the added and vital ingredientthat is theory-based learning, so you get the
best of both worlds.
London Business Schools (LBS) general

Combining research-based learning with
an emphasis on real-life situations, its 15-21

Preparation is important. Many
people take a couple of years or more
from first considering studying for
an MBA to making an actual
application. During this time they will
negotiate with their employer, discuss
with family and friends, visit schools
and meet with current students.
If you cant visit schools to cement
your interest and make a decision,
then social media is a fantastic
medium to continue your research.
The activity and interaction that
takes place on platforms such
as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook
will tell you a lot about a business
schools culture and values.

The MBA helped me to understand
the commercial side of business
which will enable me to be in
a more central position within
any organisation. I now havea better chance to reach more
senior positions and work
in new business sectors.
I also volunteer with local
non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) and help focus their
strategies. It is the MBA that
gives me the right tools to be able
to do that in a structured way.
Since I am not a numbers
person, the finance and accounting
module was hard for me. However,
with help from my tutors and
colleagues I managed to get
through it. On a personal level,
the programme has helped me
to become more humble.
The Lancaster MBA programme
took me out of my comfort zone
and challenged me in learning
and working in new business
sectors. I now have a broader
understanding of business and
Im sure this will help me to get
my dream job within the Agro-
food industry back in Africa.

One benefit of this degree is the work-while
you-study element, which allows students
to relate their studies to work situations
by opting to take the most suitable subjects
that will have an impact on their business.
The practical projects you work on will allow
you to test out new ideas directly in your
working environment. This hands-on approach
means many students utilise these projects and
go on to become entrepreneurial leaders.
All assessment is centred on students own
work requirements so all learned theory is also
put into practice from the start.
Although you can work at your own pace with
the EMBA and utilise the programme in a way
that will better your business, you are still
required to undertake exams and coursework
to complete the course. Opportunities to travel
abroad are common on EMBAs (check with
the school to which you are applying) andmodules can be taken at campuses abroad.
n executive MBA (EMBA) is similar
in content to a general MBA the
difference being that you can work
and study at the same time.
EMBAs normally consist of core modules
including accounting, marketing and
operational management. Students then choose
from a range of electives and a management
project to complete the programme.
The Executive MBA at Nottingham University
Business School allows students to vary the
number of modules they take each year, which
are taught in one-week, self-contained blocks.
The programme can be finished over two
to four years and it is this flexibility which
attracts the most ambitious executives
and managers to EMBAs.
Students on the Nottingham EMBA usually
have between 8-15years managerial experience
prior to beginning the programme, butcandidates with five years may be accepted.

Career progressionThe job market is competitive and an
EMBA can help build the beginnings
of a lucrative and prosperous career.
Leaders need to display to companies
a capacity to deal with the pressures
of a complex and ever-changing
business world, and this is where
an EMBA comes in.
There is a strong emphasis
on thinking about the connection
between theory and practice. Partof the learning takes place in the
university, but part takes place
in other contexts including the
workplace, private study and
a residential study school, says Mike
Henderson, programme leader for the
MBA at Sheffield Business School.
The benefits to your salary from
taking an EMBA are also clear. The
Financial Timesconducted a survey
of4,600 EMBA graduates from across
the globe in 2010, and found that theclass of2007 could expect a median
salary increase of55%within three
years of graduating.
Choosing the right course
Deciding which EMBA programme
to take is hard and there is no one
formula that can be applied
to everyone. Its important
to examine your own reasons
for choosing to study.
Do you want to develop yourabilities to operate internationally?
Have you always planned on going
to business school but never
researched it? What mode of study
best suits your life?
Remember that the skills you gain
will have to be used to benefit your
employer, particularly if they are
funding your course.
Its also important to be aware of the
entry requirements for the course youare interested in taking. Some courses
only accept applicants who have
corporate sponsorship. Others will
require you to take more than 12
weeks leave from your job. Add in the
stress of juggling the programme with
your personal and work life, and its
obvious that you must have clear
motivation for taking an EMBA.
Applying to several business schools
is a good way of comparing your
options. Look for courses with
modules covering social and corporate
responsibility and entrepreneurship,
as these are topical interests in the
business world. Check out staff
expertise to see if your interests are
matched.
Most of all, remember that the
contacts you make from your course
are likely to be the biggest reward
from your investment.

discusses her experience at
Imperial College Business School
I have always had an interest
in learning and development.
This, combined with ten
years professional experience
in marketing communications,
has given me a desire to pursue
further professional
development with an EMBA.
The subject I enjoyed the
most was organisational
behaviour as its relevant
to any organisation and work
situation. Its interesting to
discover theories that are the
basis of interactions at work,
such as motivation and team
decision making.
Life as an EMBA student
is a commitment that you
have to take seriously everyday. It requires studying in the
evening after work, meeting
with classmates for study groups
on a Saturday, and attending
weekly conference calls with my
syndicate group to ensure the
group assignments are on track.
My advice would be to
seriously think about why you
want to do an EMBA and what
you would like to get out of it.

while the Global Energy MBA at Warwick
Business School (WBS) is for students that
are already working in the industry.
Dr Michael Shulver, assistant dean of Masters
programmes at WBS, says, It is designed for
managers working in or with the energy sector.
It is taken over three years with a mix of weeks
at Warwick and distance learning.
With the onus being on sector and jobfunction, the nature of this MBA means
it is a great tool to drive a career in a certain
direction. Combining academic rigour with
an understanding of how to practically apply
new knowledge and business tools allows
students to develop the skills necessary
to run their business.
Our teaching focus is on global and
international management, so participants soon
benefit from this lively intellectual exchange,
and learn how to work together across cultures
and share the various work experiences theybring to their group, adds Dr Shulver.
pecialist MBAs are available in a range
of subjects, from healthcare to
entrepreneurship, global energy
to medical leadership. Choosing
the right one will depend on the job role
you wish to pursue.
As such, the specialist route often appeals
to students who know exactly what they want,
and which direction to take their businessaspirations after graduating.
Different sectors
With programmes like the MBA in
Entrepreneurship at Nottingham University
Business School, students have the chance
to set themselves apart and create an air
of individuality when applying for managerial
jobs in the future.

Flexibility
The attraction of a specialist MBA
is the flexibility to break away from
the general programme and steer
towards a more useful direction for
your business without neglecting
core business principles.
While the general MBA gives you
a rounded knowledge of business
management, a specialisedqualification will help you relate
to your sector, set you apart from those
who do not have such expertise, and
craft you into a leader in your field.
One course that aims to do this
is the Brunel MBA with a
specialisation in Healthcare
Management. Students split their
time 60%-40% between general
management modules and the
more specialist requirements
of a career in healthcare.
In other words, a specialist MBA
gives you the best of both generalmanagement techniques and
the industry-specific knowledge
required to become a business
leader.
The Global MBA is a journey
that requires careful planning,
consideration, perseverance
and ultimately, execution. The demands are significant
and as such the sense
of achievement that you
experience as you progress
from module to module
is huge.
It is the successful progression
along this journey that I enjoyed
most, knowing that the
destination is a globally
respected qualification that
will stay with me for the restof my life.
I undertook extensive
research prior to embarking
on the Global MBA. In the
end my decision came down
to a number of key factors:
global reputation of the
institution and programme;
flexible learning methods; the
breadth of electives; the quality
of teaching; and finally, valuefor money.
Despite my worldwide
research, I found the most
appropriate institution
to be on my doorstep
in Durham.
My ability to question, assess
sources, establish the veracity
of opposing views and then
present persuasive arguments
are skills I have benefited from
after taking the Global MBA.

Flavoured MBAs
Patricia Rees is the MBA director at
Manchester Metropolitan University
Business School. She makes a case
for taking a specialist MBA and the
importance of continued self-
development after the course
The specialist MBA may be more
attractive to some employers
however the main point
of an MBA is that it is a general
management programme.
A way forward is what could
be called the flavoured MBA.
This is where the core modules
of the MBA are in general
management and the electives
and the dissertation/consultancy
project are connected with
an individuals specialism. When
we offer flavoured MBAs, other
faculties in the university provide
the electives and dissertation
supervision.
It would be possible to run
specialisms in areas such
as architecture, engineering,
health, entrepreneurship,
finance, banking and hospitality
and tourism.
Organisations such as the
Association of MBAs offer events
which often provide student
updates. Business schools also
host refresher sessions which
can be registered as continuing
professional development (CPD)
and there are opportunities
in mentoring as both mentor
and mentee. MBA holders
often join corporate clubs such
as the Institute of Directors
or the Chartered Management
Institute to further progress
their careers.

If youre looking for
a top-notch business
school then ABS
is for you
What did you do before your MBA?After
graduating with a BSc in Computer Science
with French from Swansea University in 2004.
I went to Rome to learn Italian in a language
school for eight months. I then did a Certificate
in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
qualification to teach at International House
Rome and began working at the Wall Street
Institute shortly afterwards.
After a year of teaching, I was promotedto service manager at one of the Wall Street
Institute centres in Rome. Six months later,
I was promoted to service manager of the
flagship centre in Italy before being promoted
to regional service manager.
Why an MBA? I had achieved all I wanted
to achieve with the Wall Street Institute and
that I wanted another challenge. It was then
that the idea of an MBA came to my mind
and the notion started to appeal. I researched
different business schools, talked to familyand friends and worked out the costs.
I went to Aston Business School to meet the
programme directors and take a look around.
It immediately stood out due to its open, friendly
and informal nature and its high position in the
Financial Times Global MBA Rankings. I duly
applied and to my delight was accepted.
Tell us about the programme... I chose the
full-time MBA which involved three terms
of12weeks, with exams in week12, plus a final
live consultancy project. Each module required
around four hours of reading a week, plus
homework and coursework.
Projects I worked on included: growth strategy
for an IT consultancy company (my MBA
consultancy project); a business plan for
an e-business venture; marketing strategy for
a sports retailer; operations strategy for a music
industry giant and business ethics of the
banking industry. The programme covered all
aspects of business and made us work in teams
while giving us input on how to improve ourown performance and that of our peers.
The MBA equipped me with
a range of skills such as a better
understanding of different cultures,
methods and approaches in business
while also allowing me to develop
my business acumen. I gained
confidence through shared business
experiences and a wider context
understanding of world events.
I acquired a pragmatic approachto problem solving and the tools
to self-improve. I also gained the
ability to make informed choices
through accurate research and the
questioning of results.
Tell us about your current role at Deutsche
Bank... The corporate relations manager
at Aston Business School informed me that
they were looking for an intern and so arranged
an interview for me. I had a background
in continuous improvement, and experienceof delivering quantifiable productivity, quality
and delivery improvements, together with
my MBA so jumped at the chance. The interview
went well and I started in February2012.
Working on a project, I came into contact
with a director whose team I liked and whose
area of the bank interested me. I duly sent off
my CV, went through the interviews and started
my current role in September 2012 to my
complete joy and satisfaction.
What advice would you offer to prospective
MBA students? The MBA is multi-faceted and
multi-disciplined, quickly giving you a deep and
wide understanding of the business, political
and economic world. It pushes you to achieve all
you can, prepares you for a great career in the
business world, and gives you the skills to
approach and complete any task successfully.
If youre looking for a top-notch business
school that puts as much effort into learning and
the student experience, as well as course
content, skill improvement and connections toindustry, then Aston Business School is for you.

CASE STUDY JANE LOMAX IS STUDYING AN MBA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL
MANAGEMENT SCHOOL. SHE IS FROM NORTH WALES IN THE UK AND PREVIOUSLY
STUDIED HER UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN ACCOUNTANCY
award I received as a UK student.
After visiting each of the universities,
I found the support and contact I had
from the University of Liverpool
unsurpassable. Elaine Eades, director
of MBA programmes, and Julie Byrne,
MBA administrator, were always
happy to answer any questions and
get back to me. I found this efficiency
very persuasive.
Tell as a little bit about the course
So far within the programme, we have
covered finance, strategy, economics,
marketing, and how to develop as a leader.
Those few topics dont sound much but the
sheer volume of work covered and the intensity
of the first few weeks cannot be described. I have
enjoyed every minute of it, in particular working
in groups. The various group projects have been
really interesting, ensuring each individuals
skills are utilised to the advantage of the group
to get the best results possible.
The course is also helping me to develop
as a leader as it has required a lot of self-
reflection, allowing me to identify my skills
and the best way to utilise them. This is helping
not only within university, but also within
my home and work environments.
What advice would you give to other
considering an MBA? I thought that going
back to university and studying after 20years
would be hard, and it is. The support from
staff is excellent and students from the three
MBA courses (Liverpool MBA, Business Finance
and Management MBA and Football Industries
MBA) frequently cross-over in lecturers together,
bringing many different perspectives to the
learning. There are a significant number
of overseas students and this mix has broadened
my understanding of different cultures and
of what is happening elsewhere in the world.
I have made many friends, all of whom Im sureIll be in touch with in years to come.
I found the support
and contact I had

What degree (undergraduate) did you study
and where? I studied my first degree at the
University of North London (now the London
Metropolitan University) and graduated in 1992.
Eventually moving to the Midlands, I managed
to get a job as an internal auditor at a large
metropolitan borough council finally putting
my degree to use. I moved back to North
Wales and continued working within local
government, but this time progressing
to business improvement. I continued in this
field and moved to a senior management role
within a charity in Liverpool.
Why did you decide to pursue an MBA?
The charity had its finances significantly
reduced over the last two years and I knew
that we would have to make a number
of redundancies to ensure it continued
into the future. At this point I reflected
a lot on where and what I wanted to be, and
where my career was heading. Following
discussions with a number of my peers I felt
one of the best ways to answer my questions
was to pursue an MBA.
How are you funding your MBA?At the start
of my course I worked one day a week for
the charity. I found initially that it was easy
to balance this with studying. However,
as the course got more intense, it was difficult
to dedicate the right amount of time to mywork. Further funding issues within the charity
have since resulted in my redundancy. I have
to admit, there is a certain amount of relief
as I can now dedicate all of my time to studying.
Why did you choose this MBA programme
and Liverpool? I settled on the Liverp
