Plant Well
The right tree for the right location!
Considerations:
• What is the soil composition? i.e.. pH, organic matter, nutrient availability
• How much growth space is available? Above ground and below?
• How much sunlight is available?
• How much water is available?
• What is the purpose for the tree? i.e.wind block, shade, feature, privacy, habitat, etc.

Selection Process
Avoid trees that:
• have bad root structure i.e. girdling roots
• have too many leaders
• have been tip pruned extensively i.e. apical pruning
• are too big. Small trees tolerate transportation and transplanting stress better
• have bark wounds

Too large? Girdled roots Bark wound
