Operations Research & Management Science
Operations Research & Management Science • Operations Research (OR), also known as
Management Science (MS), is a collection of techniques based on mathematics and other scientific approaches that seeks solution to “best” design & operate a system.
• Usually requires the allocation of scarce resources.
• One distinguishing feature of operations research is that it is not application specific.
Today: Optimization is Everywhere Mathematical optimization has become commonplace
in:• Air traffic control• Business games• Criminal justice• E-business• Energy• Financial services• Genetics• Health care• Logistics/supply chains
> Manufacturing> Marketing> Operations
management> Product design> Production Planning> Public systems> System design> Telecommunications> Transportation
