Marxists argue the family performs 3 main functions, that maintain a capitalist society:

1) Inheritance of property

2) Ideological functions

3) Unit of consumption

1) Inheritance of property: (AO1)Who owns the production of society's tools, land and labour?

In earliest societies according to Marx there was 'primitive communism'. There was no private property and people worked communally.Engels called this the 'promiscuous horde' or tribe. No restrictions on sexual relationships were imposed.

Women will only be free of patriarchal control with the overthrow of capitalism. Production will be owned collectively & society will be classless. There will be no need for the nuclear family as private property won't need to be passed on.

2) Ideological functions:

A set of ideas or beliefs which persuades people to believe or accept that the inequality that they face is fair.. Parental power over children socialises them for the workforce. (Families socialise children into accepting hierarchy)

‐Zaretsky (1976) the family offers the illusion of a haven from the frustrations of the capitalist workplace, but this does not meet the needs of the family members (eg: based on servitude of women)

3) A unit of consumption (AO1):

Capitalism exploits workers by profiting from the goods they have made. Profits come from the fmaily as they are the ones who buy the goods: advertisers encourage families to keep up with the trendspester‐powerchildren stigmatised if they lack the latest items.

ITEM B: In the view of Marxist sociologists, all of society’s institutions contribute to

maintaining the capitalist system. These institutions include the family, which

Marxists see as performing important functions for capitalism. For example, its role

in socialising the young helps to ensure that capitalism is provided with the next

generation of docile workers.

However critics argue that the Marxist view of the family ignores issues such as

family diversity as well as inequalities within the family.

1) Applying material from item B and your own knowledge, evaluate the

usefulness of Marxist sociologists for the study of families and households.
