Worthy Officers and Brothers All:
As we enter the season of Lent, may this time be a reflection for all of us on what we can do, as individuals and as Knights of Columbus, to get closer to God and to give to our church and our community a little bit more than we already do. This is the time in our liturgical year where we reach deep within ourselves to find that little extra we can give to God
For our Council, this is also a time of mourning. We lost a good Sir Knight this week when Brother Andy Lacek (1920 - 2012) passed away on Thursday. Although only a knight for 7 years, Sir Knight Andy was present at almost all of the Council and Assembly meetings. He would always remind us of how important the patriotic responsibility of our order is when he would say "love it or leave it" after our Pledge of Allegiance. I am sure that there are Brothers who can speak better about Brother Andy than I can, I will always remember his passion for the Knights and his dedication to our Council. Brother Andy, you will be missed and may you now enjoy the eternal reward our Lord has prepared for you.
For me, personally, I have never received a phone call like the one I got that evening. As I was on my way out to a school function, Brother Andy's son called me to deliver the news about his father. He said that my phone number was the only number in his father's wallet and that he got it off the back of his KofC Membership Card. As Financial Secretary, I knew there was always a chance I would get a call like this, but I can't describe how it actually felt to get one. It served as a hard and poignant reminder of the immense responsibilities of the office I hold and that even though I've been in it for 23 months, there are still things I have yet to learn.
In other Council happenings, I enjoyed very much seeing a lot of you out on the day of the Citizens with Disabilities Campaign. It's a great opportunity for me to visit with some of you that I don't have a chance to see at the meetings. We raised more money this year than we ever have and I am proud of all of you for a job well done. I also wish to thank my Mom Francine, my Dad Sir Knight Al and my uncle Sir Knight Jim for helping me count, roll and wrap all the money. We were all up until after 11 PM doing it and I could not have done it without their help!
I wish to thank everyone who has come out and helped the Clermont Middle School Band by joining us at Pizza Hut on Mondays. Every little bit helps! We are doing this all the way through the end of March, so as long as you have a flyer, 20% of your Pizza Hut order will be donated to the CLMS Band! Please consider helping us out! If you need a flyer, you can print the one from the newsletter or send me an e-mail and I'll send you one. You can ignore the date, by the way. It's good, trust me!
Finally, I'd like to wish you all a very happy St. Patrick's Day and may the luck of the Irish be with you all. God bless you

Scenes From our Recent Tootsie Roll DriveSpecial thanks to Brother Bob Peraza for once again chairing this important
campaign. The effort Bob puts into this event is incredible. Thanks Bob. We raised over $2,300 for charity in this annual one day effort…thanks to all and
especially to our Financial Secretary Allen Venezio who was up to almost midnight counting all the monies from the five locations.
Tootsie Roll 2012 results are 30 % higher than in 2011 Numbers compiled by Alan Venezio Jr. show that our 2012 Tootsie roll campaign dollars were 30 % higher than in 2011, $2,302.52 were collected in 2012 vs $1767.86 in 2011. The same stores were used in both years. All stores
had increased collections but special thanks are due to the brothers at Publix Minneola that showed a 116% increase and at Publix Groveland with a 31 % increase. Many thanks to all who worked and to the chair, Bob Peraza, who put quite a few hours in the effort.

Some Things To Ponder
From Your Fraternal Benefits Advisor
Shopping that all men should doBy nature, most men do not like to shop. At the risk of sounding chauvinistic, that inclination seems more likely to drive our wives, daughters, mothers or other females we know. Sure, there are exceptions. Maybe you enjoy trips to the hardware store for a tool to help on a
home improvement project. Maybe you’re a collector or you like to shop for cars. Maybe you like to find the best deal on the newest high-tech gadget for your living room. When you do decide it’s time to make a purchase, if you’re like me, you want to get the best value for your money. You want the best customer service possible. Sometimes, this requires lots of research and planning. But one of the most important purchases you can make can be put into motion through a simple meeting with me, a brother Knight. The core product offered by the Knights of Columbus is not glitzy. It’s not like a new car or a classic one. It’s not like a laptop or a flatscreen television. It’s not something you can “show off” to your friends, but you can brag about it. Life insurance is something that everyone needs. If you have some life insurance, the odds are great that you need more. If you don’t have any coverage, you should stop to consider all the benefits of a whole life policy. Remember, it’s not about you. It’s about your family. When was the last time you shopped for life insurance? If the answer is “a long time ago” or “never,” it’s time you speak with me. Have you considered your retirement and how you will afford to maintain your current lifestyle? Our annuities can help. Is your income protected in the event of a serious illness or injury? Are you prepared to cover the expensive costs of long-term care should you or your spouse need it? The Knights of Columbus can help provide solutions to these common situations, too. Please schedule an appointment with me today.

Dear Sir KnightsExemplification to the 4th Degree coming to Orlando May 5th. Please see all third degree members and invite them to join now. This degree location- Doubletree by Hilton, Orlando- is the closest for members of our sister council 13240. If you need a Form 4 please contact the Faithful Navigator . Cut off for Doubletree Hotel Reservations is April 5th. Call 1-800 327-2100 and mention the Knights and the rate is $111.38 per night. Cut off for Candidate submission of paper work to the FN will be April 15,2012. We are looking for a strong turnout for this home turf degree.Notification: It is with deep regret that we acknowledge the passing of our brother SK Andrew S. Lacek Jr.. Andy, as we knew him, was the epitome of a gentleman and great friend to all in the Assembly, our sister Council 13240 and our Blessed Sacrament Parish. He returns to his maker and ,as he said, his bride of 62 years. God Bless Andy. ( Don do you have a picture of Andy??)Events in the news: I hope you all have been paying attention to the recent news on the Health and Human Services ruling on employers providing health insurance to employees. The issue raised by our Catholic Bishops, and other faith based employers, was the constitutionality of forcing religious employers to provide employees things like – FDA approved contraception methods, sterilization procedures, and several drugs that induce abortions- that are against the employers conscience and teachings . The issue played out in the various news media and there is an administration workaround submitted to the religious organizations. Your Conference of Catholic Bishops is heavily engaged in challenging this new ruling, the Supreme Knight and Supreme Council issued press releases and there are both House and Senate bills addressing the issue. Please stay in touch with what is going on as this is an issue of importance to us as Catholics and Knights. Nearer to home- an excellent source of info on religious issues being addressed by the Florida Legislature is the Florida Catholic Conference web site [email protected]. The is a weekly summary of bills going through dealing with social issues, abortion clinics, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, etc. Stay informed so that you can address these issues to your congressional reps, your family and brother Knights.Your Color Guard: Things are looking up- literally. The new flags, poles and holders have arrived and the Color Guard is hard at practice under the eye of our leader SK Don Gelinas. We are shooting to be the Color Guard team at the May and November Exemplifications here in Orlando. If you are interested in becoming a member or just rooting us on see Don for info. Thanks: Once again we had a great turn out of Color Corps for the Blessed Sacrament Confirmation Mass. I received many favorable comments from parishioners about the professional way we went about serving at the Mass and in the social hall getting the Confirmed through the picture line with Bishop Noonan. A great job done by professionals encourages more to join and gives praise to him that we serve.

Catholics That Helped Shaped America
The OʼRorke family immigrated to the United States from County Cavan, Ireland
when Patrick Henry “Paddy” OʼRorke was still an infant. Settling in Upstate New
York, the community of Rochester became Paddy OʼRorkeʼs hometown
throughout his formative youth. His scholarly prowess was legendary and is still
recalled with fond affection by Rochester-area educators. Paddy OʼRorke left
Rochester in 1857 to accept a cadetship appointment to the United States
Military Academy at West Point. He graduated West Point in June 1861—at the
top of his class. First assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers, Second
Lieutenant OʼRorke showed rare skill and brilliant talent as an Army engineering officer. Paddy O”Rorke
saw considerable Civil War combat during the summer of 1861 and into 1862. Serving with General
McDowellʼs Army, his first combat occurred during the Manassas Campaign at the Battle of Blackburnʼs
Ford and the First Battle of Bull Run. Confederate fire killed his horse under him while riding into battle
at Bull Run. Leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, Paddy OʼRorke was additionally recognized for
gallant and meritorious service during the significant Civil War Battles of Fredericksburg and
Chancellorsville.
Colonel Patrick Henry O'Rorke was Commanding Officer of the noble 140th Infantry Regiment New York
State Volunteers throughout the first half of 1863. The 140th New York became one of the best regiments
in the Army of the Potomac––due largely to Colonel OʼRorkeʼs good discipline and training methods––
military traits instilled and reinforced in the manly and good character of his Upstate New York
Volunteers. Around noon on July 2, 1863, Colonel OʼRorke was leading the 140th New York to support
heavy Gettysburg fighting near the Wheatfield––when he was spotted by General G. K. Warren who
urgently rode to his dear friend Paddy, requesting he instruct the 140th New York to turn-aside and
defend Little Round Top. Colonel OʼRorke promptly understood the critical nature of General Warrenʼs
pleading and ordered the 140th New York to the summit of lightly protected Little Round Top “on-the-
double-quick”. This intelligent, articulate and promising twenty-six-year colonel was Killed-In-Action in
the early afternoon of July 2, 1863, instantly slain by a Confederate sharpshooter with a shot through the
neck. He had coolly jumped-up on a rock and shouted his last order…“Down this way, boys!” Colonel
OʼRorke was at the front of his 140th New York Regiment, rushing downhill off Little Round Top summit
in what some have called a charge. This critical 140th New York movement backed the heavily engaged
and nearly overrun Federal forces of the brave 16th Michigan Infantry Regiment––and ultimately
reversed a nearly successful right flank break-through by the bold Texas 4th and 5th Regiments. A
monument to Colonel OʼRorke is placed on the summit of Little Round Top where the colonel fell.
