Agroupofbiohackerssaytheyvefiguredoutawaytoinjectoureyeballswithnightvision,orlowlightvisionanyway.Theprocedurehasallowedonesuperhumantotemporarilyseeover50meters(164feet)inthedark,Micreports.
TheteamfromCaliforniabasedSciencefortheMasses(SfM)utilizedacompoundcalledChlorine6(orCe6),whichisfoundinsomedeepseafish.Itsalsooccasionallyusedtotreatnightblindnessandevencancer.Previousstudieshaveinjectedthechemicalasaphotosensitizerintoanimalmodels.Afterdoingtheresearch,youhavetotakethenextstep,saysJeffreyTibbetts,SfM'smedicalofficer.SoSfMsbiochemresearcherGabrielLicinaagreedtobecomeahumanlabrat.
First,Licinaseyeswereflushedcleanandhiseyelidswerestretchedoutwithaspeculum(noblinking!).ThenTibbettsusedapipettetodrop50microlitersofablackishsolutionCe6mixedwithsaline,insulin,anddimethlysulfoxide(DMSO)intohiseyes.Specifically,hewasaimingfortheconjunctivalsac,whichshouldhelpcarrythecompoundtothelightsensingretina.DMSOincreasedthepermeabilityofthecellsforbetterabsorption."Tome,itwasaquick,greenishblackbluracrossmyvision,andthenitdissolvedintomyeyes,"LicinatellsMic.Hethenputprotectivelensesinhiseyestoblockoutsomelightsunglasseshelpedtoo.
Aftertwohours,theteamtestedLicinia'snewfoundsuperpowerinadarkfield.Atfirst,Licinawasabletoseehandsizedshapesabout10meters(33feet)away.Intime,hewasabletorecognizesymbols(likenumbersandletters)aswellasobjectsmovingagainstdifferentbackgroundsatlongerdistances.
Inonetest,hehadtoindicatewherepeoplewerelocatedinagroveoftrees50metersawayusingalaserpointer.Hegotitrighteverytime,evenwhenthesubjectswere
