Mainstream What sold over the holidays?

TERRY PIERSON Owner, Eve’s in West Malling, Kent“Luisa Cerano has done well for us, predominantly the knitwear (retailing at £200 to £300). It’s very good quality and quite stylish, which people seem to like. Joseph Ribkoff dresses (£175 to £275) always sell for us too. They’re easy to look after and a great fit.”

TIFFANY ROSS Buyer, Cavells in Oakham, Rutland“We’ve been doing a real mix of the Oui Moments range across the board. In particular we’ve found the knitwear (£89 to £139) and jeggings (£95) sell quite strongly. The brand has a broad appeal across a wide range of ages. Michael Kors jackets (from £300) and dresses (£120 to £150) have also been strong.”

PAULINE JONES Director, Prelude in Westerham, Kent“Joseph Ribkoff continues to be our bestseller, particularly dresses (£150 to £250), tops (£150 to £250) and trousers (£100 to £195). People like the shape and fit. The colours, sizing and fabrics are also very good.”

ANNETTE COLLINS Partner, Annette Collins in Norwich“Frank Walder’s jersey pull-on stretch trousers have gone very well – we’ve completely sold out. It has a slightly narrower leg which has been popular. Its great price is reflected in the sell-through. Michèle trousers (£100 to £122) are another strong range. Also, spring stock from Gerry Weber has been selling. The tops (from £50) have been very popular in white, black or lime.”

TANYA HARDY Owner, Orchid in Skegness, Lincolnshire“We’ve been selling a real mix of Joseph Ribkoff. The tops (£179 to £230) and jackets (£170 to £230) have been popular. The cut and fit always attracts women. We’ve also sold a lot of Tivoli, which produces knitwear that’s a little unusual and quirky. Tivoli’s dresses (from £90) and jackets (from £120) have been in demand too.”

TRACEY MCINTOSH Manager,Goddards in King’s Lynn, Norfolk“We’re always selling Gerry Weber. We sell lots of the knitwear (£80), coats (from £200) and jeans (£80). It has a great range of bright colours which make for classic, reliable pieces. We’re also into our second year selling White Stuff. The knitwear (from £60) and tops (£39.95) have been doing very well.”

CLAIRE FALLON Owner,Jacquies in Weybridge, Surrey “Joseph Ribkoff is always in demand, particularly the dresses (£220 to £250) and tops (£160 to £200). It’s a classic, wearable range popular with the 40-plus lady. Rabe is also doing well. It’s a German knitwear range that is quite classic with excellent quality. We’ve been selling lots of the jumpers (£85 to £120).”

DAVID BUNDY Manager, Chas Baker in Salisbury, Wiltshire “Gant has sold across the board. It’s always a strong performer. We’ve been doing a lot of the trousers (£100) and the plain sweaters (from £85). Meyer trousers have been another good seller because they have a classic style. People know the cut and the brand never changes it. The Oslo trouser (£80) is a clever design. It has a hidden elastic waist.”

JOHN KINGSLEY Managing director, Chadds in Norwich“Gurteen has impressed. The jacket range (from £190) has been popular. Magee is probably our biggest seller though. Again, jackets (£295 to £325) are popular, as is suiting (from £295). We’ve sold Magee for more than 50 years and it is a wonderful brand.”

MARK CLIFTON Owner,Clive Continental Menswear in Aberystwyth “Olymp shirts have been great. The brush cotton (£45) and formal style (£35 to £45) have all been flying out. The brand does three different fits which suit everyone. We’re also doing a lot of the casual cotton Brühl trousers (£70). We’ve been selling them for years and see a lot of repeat business on them.”

STEVE NICOLL Group buyer, Elys of Wimbledon“Superdry outerwear (£75 to £140), knitwear (£40 to £70) and sweatshirts (£45 to £75) have all been selling. It’s good value for money with good design. Waxed coats from Barbour have been moving too. In particular the Duke (£199) and classics like the Ashby (£199). It’s good design combined with great pricing.”

PETER WATTS Owner, Peter Watts Menswear in Pershore, Worcestershire “Eterna shirts (£59 to £79) have been popular. We tend to sell more of the casual range. It’s a relatively new brand for us.”

Gurteen is another strong brand, with the standard Cologne trouser (£59.95) impressing. We do eight colours and we’ve had great sell-through.”

NIGEL SCOTT Director, N Arnison & Sons in Penrith, Cumbria Olymp has done very well for us. We’ve been selling more of the formal shirts (£45 to £50). We have a very strong formal trade.
