INTRODUCTION
Tourism in India is the largest service industry, with a contributionof6.23% to the national GDP and 8.78%of the total employment in India.
India witnesses more than17.9 million annual foreign tourist arrivals and740 milliondomestic tourism visits. The tourism industry in India generated
about US$100billionin2008 and that is expected toincrease to US$275.5billionby 2018 at a 9.4% annual growth rate. In the year2010, 17.9 millionforeign tourists visited India. Majority offoreign touristscome from USA
and UK. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, UttarPradesh and Rajasthan are the top 5states to receive inbound tourists
.Domestic tourism in the same year was massive at 7401million. Andhra
Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra received the bigshare of these visitors.

TRANSPORTATION
Air:Almost all the majorcitiesofMaharashtra have airports. Sahara
(International) and Santa Cruz (Domestic) are the two airportsin Mumbai.
Ports: There are nearly around48 minor portsin Maharashtra. Most of thesehandle passenger traffic and have a limitedcapacity. The two principal ports,
Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mumbai Port, which are at Mumbai.
Railways: Indian Railway has trainstations evenin almost all the small and
remote villagesofMaharashtra.
Road Transport: Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation'sbuses ply onover19,000 routesin the state, covering 1.2 million km. The Corporation hasnearly
15,500buses. In addition to the government services, cities have private andnon-private taxis, auto-rickshaws, andintra-city buses, which run efficiently.

Maharashtriansconsider anna, orfood equals to Brahma, the creatorof theuniverse.
Maharashtriansbelieve inoffering theirfoodfirst to the God as athanksgiving.
Especially onfestive occasions, specific mithais (sweets) are offeredsuchasukadiche modak (Ganesh Chaturthi) andsatyanarayan puja sheera.
Maharashtriancuisine has two majorstyles - Konkan and Varadi.
A major portionofMaharashtra, which lieson the coast of the Arabian Sea,iscalled the Konkan having itsown Konkanicuisine, which is a combination
ofMalvani, Gaud Saraswat Brahmin and Goancuisines.The cuisine for the interior Maharashtra or the Vidarbha area iscalled
Varadicuisine.

Gifted with its rich culture and traditions, Maharashtra hasdifferent typesofdance forms.
Povada is the dance form that showcases the lifetime achievementsof theMaratha ruler Shivaji Maharajah.
Lavani and Kolidance forms entertain the Maharashtrians with itsmesmerizing music and rhythmic movements.
Dhangri Gaja dance pays respect to their Godby the DhangarsofSholapur.
Dindi and Kala are the religiousfolk dances, which expressesof religious
ecstasy ofLord Krishna.Tamasha is the folk dance that isso popular all over the state.

As Maharashtra is a big state, it is home to many religions.
The state alsonurturesdifferent traditions with diverse communities.
Maharashtrians are fun loving people, so that might be another reasonwhy the state has lotsofdifferent festivals.
Apart from the mainfestivalsofEid, Holi, Deewali andotherfestivals,which are celebrated, all over India, there are otherfestivals, which arecelebrated locally and regionally in Maharashtra.
Songs, dance and mouth watering cuisines accompany almost everyfestivals.

CAVES
Maharashtra isfamousforitscaves.
The state has the largest numberofcavesin India.
The cavesin Maharashtra are soold, dating back to as early as1stcentury BC.
Most of the caves were used as the viharas (hall) andchaityas (pillaredreligiouscaves) by Buddhist, Hindu and Jain priests.
These cavesshowcase fine arts andcraftsof the historical past.
Ajanta and Ellora Aurangabaddistrict is the best example for theexperiments that hadcarriedout by Buddhist, Hindu and Jain priestsin
making these huge and wonderful caves.

Having a coastline of330 miles (530 km) along the Arabian Sea,Maharashtra owns variety ofbeaches.

and Bassein, which are a bit slow but provide a peaceful and pollution-freeenvironment.
