COVER STORY6 All the ‘news’ from magieThis year’s Midwest AG Industries Exposition (MAGIE) show in Bloomington, IL, featured more new product introductions than the industry has seen since the early 2000s.
Contents September/October 2017 • Volume 14, Issue 5 FOR the past 36 years now, numer-
ous ag retailers and their suppli-
ers have made it a regular practice
to attend the annual Midwest AG
Industries Exposition (MAGIE) show in
Illinois. From its early days in Danville to
today’s larger show in Bloomington, the
Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association
(IFCA) sponsored event has allowed
attendees to interact and see all the lat-
est products/services being offered for agriculture. Lately, long-
time attendees have gotten used to big MAGIEs.
But the 2017 show topped them all, in so many ways!
For one thing, there were dozens of new products launched
at MAGIE 2017. There were new sprayers, spreaders, tenders,
and application booms, along with “smaller” new items such as
front-end loaders and precision agriculture products.
Perhaps as a result of all these new products to see, MAGIE
2017 attracted a record number of attendees. Normally, the
show tends to see just over or under 2,000 attendees walk its
exhibit displays during its two-day run. But this year, says IFCA
President Jean Payne, the total number of attendees was closer
to the 3,000 mark.
Finally, the weather might also have helped boost these
numbers somewhat. In some years, being held in late August,
MAGIE days have been extremely hot and humid, with tempera-
tures regularly topping the 90-degree mark. This year, however,
both MAGIE show days saw temperatures in the low 70s, with
clear and sunny skies.
Hopefully, all these factors taken together mean the ag retail
equipment marketplace is now poised for a great year in 2018!

Switches, Relays, and DiodesAlthough small, these components can be very important.
BB JOHN DIGNAN
THIS month we’re going to
explore common electric com-
ponents including switches,
relays, and diodes.
Switches make and break
the electrical connection to give control to
the operator. Switches come in all sizes,
shapes, and current handling capacity
and are selected to best fill the need.
When you’re replacing switches, there will
be a lot of times you will find a different
looking switch could fit the need.
Now let’s talk about poles and throws.
You will find the electrical operation of a
switch is specified as poles and throws.
“Single pole-single throw,” or “single
pole-double throw,” or perhaps “double
pole-single throw,” or “double pole-dou-
ble throw” would be typical switches.
Basically more than one electrical switch
can be built into a single switch body.
“Poles” are the individual switches built
within the switch body and the “Throws”
are the number of switch position.
A basic on-off switch would be called a
“single pole-single throw” and referred to
as a SPST switch.
A “double pole-single throw,” DPST
switch, is basically two SPST switches
activated by a single lever action.
Throws in FocusWhen a single wire needs to switch
to multiple contacts or wires, the switch
action is referred to as THROWS. Rotary
switches could connect a single contact
point or wire to many other contacts
through the circular movement. A “SP12T”
rotary switches to 12 different contacts.
A SPDT switch will have one contact
open and the other in a closed state.
They are marked “NO” for normally open
and “NC” for normally closed.
An almost unlimited number of contact
arrangements are available. The other
consideration in switch selection is the
“ACTION.” Basically how you want to
move the switch. The “toggle action”
could be “push button,” “rotary,” “slide,”
“key operated,” “rocker,” or pretty well
any way you want it to move.
Toggle switches use a lever to control
movement. The lever could be short
or long, round, or flat. When replacing
switches, the required mounting hole
size is extremely important.
You’ll find some toggle switches may
have a “CENTER OFF” position. A “DPDT
CENTER OFF” switch has a neutral posi-
tion in the center where a “DPDT” switch
from one connection to the other without
the neutral position at center.
Another DPDT switch might be
“momentary” on one side or both.
The “contact type” is also important.
You can get solder terminals, spade ter-
minals, screw type, printed circuit board,
and others. Make sure what you order is
really what you want.
Relays can be thought of as remote
control switches. A single small “signal
switch” can activate a high current circuit
great distances away. The relay could
have multiple switches built in the design
allowing multiple circuits to be activated
by a single switch.
The open construction of the relay
shown allows a better understanding
of how switches are
constructed. This is
a double pole-double
throw relay. The pole
contact uses a wire to
make the connection.
When power is applied
to the coil, the “normally
open” contact closes.
Releasing the spring return allows a
better look at the contacts. There are
really two SPDT switches as part of this
relay making it a DPDT Switch.
When you need to switch on and off the
main power wire feeding your precision
equipment or even the main batteries, the
easiest way is to use a relay. Otherwise
you need to bring the large wires into the
cab to be switched. You can buy relays at
the auto parts store for about $10 with a
40 AMP capacity relay that can be mount-
ed outside of the cab.
Much larger 100 AMP and up relays
are available from suppliers. Check out
supplies at waytekwire.com. They have a
great selection of relays, wire, terminals,
connectors, shrink tubing, and other
things needed buy field techs.
Relays have a coil for activation like a
solenoid with a 12-volt connection and
ground. The relay itself could be mounted
on the chassis or tool using a simple on-off
switch in the cab to control it. From the cab
then, send out two wires to the relay; one for
power activation and the other as ground.
UNRELIABLE Chassis grounds Sometimes “switches aren’t switch-
es.” Several years ago we started
to find that the switches built into
tractor cabs and sprayers didn’t act
like switches. For years we could tie
into existing switches to activate the
booms or engage autosteer systems.
Today the switches are part of a CAN
module that is recognized by the on-
board computer. Recently I bought a new
window control for my GMC truck. When
I installed it, I then had a condition where
no functions worked. I gave up and went
to Mr. GoodWrench. The mechanic told
me my new switch
module would not
take programming. I
hadn’t realized it was
really a CAN module.
Diodes act like
a “check valve” in
an electrical circuit.
They will only allow
current flow in one
direction. They are
used behind-the-
scene within the electronics and they can
be used in field work very effectively to
solve a few situations.
The diodes we use in the field can vary.
The larger the diode physically, the higher
the current handling capability. The small-
er of the two shown is a 1 AMP capacity
and the larger is a 7 AMP.
The BAND on one end indicates the
polarity of the connection. The banded
side is called the CATHODE and the other
side is the ANODE. Anytime the ANODE
has a higher voltage than the CATHODE,
current will flow. Just like a check valve
for an electric current.
The circuit shown in Figure 1 shows a
simple circuit with a lamp, a power source
and a diode. The bulb lights because the
diode when installed correctly does not
block the flow. If the diode was flipped, the
bulb wouldn’t light.

When electronic boom control systems
are installed, the system switches the
booms on and off. If you wanted to add
manual switches for control you would
want to install diodes to protect the con-
trol system from the voltage sent by your
manual switches.
Installing diodes as shown in Figure 2
will protect the boom control system.
I’ve also used the same hook-up with
automatic vertical control systems on tile
machines. Automatic operation is great
but the manual switches give the operator
full control.
Other Useful AreasThe other area I’ve found diodes to be
very useful in the field has been, adding
a “back-up” battery on four wheelers to
provide for gps electronics. The battery
is not big enough on the four wheeler to
supply power reliably to the gps electron-
ics. Figure 3 shows a second battery can
be added in parallel. “Parallel meaning”
hooked directly plus to plus and minus
to minus. You want the four wheeler to
charge the add-on battery when running
but not drain current from the add-on bat-
tery at other times. Installing a diode at the
connection point solves the problem.
Hope this issue of Tech Notes was
helpful. Remember, Tech Notes is writ-
ten for the field techs. Please pass them
on to the field guys! You can contact me

gestions are appreciated! IRON
Switches, Relays, and DiodesAlthough small, these components can be very important.
OHMs Correction! Before we get going on the new
column I want to pass along an editing
error that was in the last Tech Notes
covering OHMs Law, the rules of elec-
tric circuits.
The printed version reads; OHMs Law
says: Volts= AMPs X watts. WRONG!
Should have been; OHMs law says:
Volts = AMPs X OHMs. With that cor-
rection, the balance of Tech Notes is
accurate and makes sense. If you save
these columns for reference or dis-
tribute them to your field techs please
be sure to pass along that important
change.
I apologize for the error and the edi-
tors tell me they will be extra careful in
the future. — John Dignan

ASK long-time attendees to the Midwest AG
Industries Exposition (MAGIE) and many
will probably tell you one of the highlights
of the event is the annual Tailgate Party that
takes place opening evening. Here, there are
plenty of prizes given out by show sponsor the Illinois
Fertilizer & Chemical Association (IFCA), food and drinks
to be shared, and music for everyone to enjoy.
Of course, capping off this funfest is the announce-
ment of which product/company at the MAGIE show was
voted “best in show” by attendees. Eleven years ago,
CropLife IRON® magazine and IFCA started acknowl-
edging this product by awarding it the ShowStopper
Award. At the 2017 show, almost 350 visitors cast ballots
for their favorite product, the one that literally “stopped
them in their tracks to take a closer look.”
Once the votes were all counted, the 2017
ShowStopper Award winner was the RoGator C Series
Attendees at the 2017 Midwest AG Industries Exposition (MAGIE) vote the RoGator C Series as this year’s ShowStopper Award recipient.
ForAGCO,
Plan ‘C’ is the Winner
from AGCO Corp. “I’m excited
to have made such an impact
with the attendees of MAGIE this
year,” said Mark Mohr, Tactical
Marketing Manager for AGCO’s
Application Division, accepting
the coveted stop sign-shaped
trophy. “It’s really special to be
considered one of the best prod-
ucts here considering how many
new ones were on display.”
The RoGator C Series chassis features an all-wheel SmartDrive system, which can adjust
motor displacement when a wheel starts to slip, keeping the machine moving in the field.
In the cab, a new armrest is one of the primary features, with improved ergonomics for
the joystick, section switches, boom control, and liquid system controls located on the
armrest. USB power ports help keep the operator connected through the day; a program-
mable keypad allows the operator to customize the lighting package and a rearview cam-
era operates automatically when the machine shifts into reverse.
Spelling Logic with a ‘C’One of the other key features of the new RoGator C Series is the
LiquidLogic system. The FlowLogic recirculation plumbing keeps
product moving through the boom, plumbing, and filters to reduce
chemical build-up and help eliminate plugged spray tips, said
Mohr. Meanwhile, the ClearFlow recovery system uses air to
force product from the booms or reload station back into
the tank, leaving less than 2.5 gallons in systems without
injection. “And new self-priming booms help save time
and money since product flows quickly through the entire
boom once the product pump and recirculation are
turned on,” he added.
Other key features of the LiquidLogic system include a
“hold at minimum” pressure setting across the boom that
helps ensure a consistent spray pattern to keep product on
target at low speed and the ability to maintain a +/– 1 psi varia-
tion across the boom. Finally, variable displacement control of the
product pump manages and limits speed to 5,000 rpm to help pre-
vent pump failure. IRONFrom left: CropLife IRON’s Eric Sfiligoj, AGCO’s Mark Mohr, and IFCA President Jean Payne.
Two features of the new RoGator C Series are a redesigned joystick, left, and the LiquidLogic system to prevent plugged spray tips.

GNSS ReceiverPowered by its 394 channels, the SXblue Platinum
uses all-in-view constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo,
BeiDou, and QZSS) with triple frequency, and provides
the ability to use global or local coverage for corrections
(SBAS, L-Band, and RTK), says the company. With the
scalable SXblue Platinum Basic, users can activate any
frequency or constellation at any time following initial
purchase. The receiver is also field-upgradable which
means that these options can be remotely activated at
your convenience. Thanks to its new Tracer technology,
the receiver can sustain its level of accuracy when the
Atlas signal is interrupted. The Atlas service can also
stream data over the Internet (NTRIP) while ensuring the
best available vertical and horizontal accuracy.
Another new innovative feature integrated on the
Platinum model is the aRTK technology. This feature will
allow RTK corrections to be received via the Atlas ser-
vice, when RTK corrections have not been received for
a period of time. For an Atlas-subscribed user device,
a high accuracy will still be available at the subscribed
service level until RTK is restored. The new receiver is the
same compact, lightweight, palm-sized unit as the SXblue
series, which is completely dustproof and ruggedized. The
internal, rechargeable, field-replaceable Li-Ion battery has
on-board LEDs for easy access to battery life information.

Turbine GeneratorThe patented, axial flow, fixed-blade Kaplan Industrial Turbine Generator (ITG) offers a
solution that allows manufacturers, utilities, municipalities, and any business that utilizes
gravity-fed pipelines or outfalls
to convert their water flow into a
source of sustainable, renewable,
low-cost electricity. The ITG fea-
tures a direct-drive, synchronous,
permanent magnetized generator
(PMG) that captures the energy
of moving water from gravity-fed
pipelines. Unlike all other options
on the market, the simple design
of the PMG prevents the need
for an outside powerhouse or
generator to convert power to
electricity and does not require
additional cooling equipment,
says the company. The use of
permanent magnets makes the
turbine and generator act as one,
eliminating the need for transmis-
sion gearing as well as separate
motors and shafts. The all-in-one
rim design of the generator removes the need for a central shaft and couplings, resulting
in limits on noise and vibration.

ON a recent trip to New Leader/Highway Equipment Co.
in Cedar Rapids, CropLife IRON® happened upon
an old Massey Ferguson 65 tractor at the back of the
company’s production facility lot.
“That’s not our unit,” said Cory Venable, New
Leader’s Director of Marketing. “I think it belongs to the company that
is located behind our building.”
A Long HistoryRegardless of who’s tractor it is, this particular Massey Ferguson
65 comes from a proud tradition, having likely worked its way across
farm fields for better than 50 years. The model was manufactured
originally by Massey Ferguson at its facilities in Coventry, England, and
Detroit, MI between the years of 1957 and 1965. It featured a 41-hp
Continental gasoline or Perkins diesel engine and sold brand new in
1964 for $3,935. IRON
A 65 Keeps Rolling
Despite being more than 50 years old, at least one Massey Ferguson 65 tractor is still making the rounds in Eastern Iowa.
