All Welcome
Welcome back for Term 4. We’ve had a
fantastic start, with everyone refreshed
from the break and enjoying the spring
weather.
Our Year 12s are at the pointy end of
their schooling, with VCE students
working hard to prepare for their
upcoming exams. I spoke to the VCE
students this morning, to empahsise the
point that there is only a matter of
weeks to go, and all of their time and
energy should be invested in practice
examinations and getting feedback and
support from their teachers. When it’s all
over in a month’s time, they’ll be all the
more satisfied knowing they gave it their
best effort.
School Review
Every four years schools undergo a
review process, where previous and
current performance is evaluated, and a
strategic plan is made to drive the next
four years.
Our review occurred this week,
supported by experts from the
Deaprtment of Education and local
principals, who all work to support and
challenge us in how we do things.
There is much to celebrate about our
college. From the vibrant and positive
feeling as you walk around and visit
classes, to the extensive range of
opportunities our students are offered.
Adopting a growth mindset, we believe
however there are always areas for us to
improve in. We have had conversations
about high expectatoins of learning
across our college, and increasing the
focus on academic rigour. We believe
there’s great opportunity for our
students to have a greater voice in the
school, not just in regards to student
leadership of lunch time activities, but
in our core business – teaching and
learning.
Students were invited into the review
process to give feedback to the panel
about our school, and it was a
highlight of the day for us all. Indeed,
at the end of the day our students are
why we do what we do, and why we
exist as a school. We know that while
our students enjoy coming to school
and feel well supported by staff, the
best gift we can give them in their
time here is a high quality educatoin
backed up by strong learning results
and outcomes.
The review process continues over the
next few weeks as we develop our
next strategic plan – I look forward to
sharing more information with you as
it emerges.

v VCAL News
Veronica Hudson
VET/VCAL Coordinator
The last date of classes and submission of work for the
2017 VCAL students is November 8th. This allows time
for staff to complete marking and submit to the VASS
coordinator to allow for credits toward their VCAL
certificate. As the students have been advised many times,
ALL tasks need to be completed to the standard by the due
date or risk not attaining their certificate. Students can
undertake placement on Tuesdays until early December
and, where possible, week long placements can be arranged
through the school if the employer is agreeable.
2018 VCAL Information Nights are on
October 23rd- students undertaking CFA and October 24th –
students choosing Projects. These sessions have important
information for ALL VCAL students, even students who have
completed one year of VCAL already. Parents/ Guardians
and students who are unable to attend are requested to
organise a time to meet with the current VCAL coordinator.
Camp, work placement information and the structure of the
program will be discussed as well as costs for the year. If
you require further information, please contact me on

Volleyball News Andrew McIntosh
Volleyball Coach
Maffra Secondary Students on
the National stage Maffra Secondary College was well represented during the
recent Australian Junior Volleyball Championships held in
Queensland over the school holidays. For a small rural
College, having seven players and four coaches with State
teams is a significant outcome. Over eight days Victorian
teams took on other States in three age groups, Under 15,
Under 17 and Under 19. Queensland had a phenomenal
tournament, winning Gold in all but one event. Victoria had
a stronger result than in previous years, winning five Silver
and five Bronze medals.
Bridie Williamson and Mikayla Underwood had the best
results from the local contingent, winning Silver medals in
the Under 15 Championship division and the Under 17
division 1 Girls teams respectively. Anthony Young, largely
responsible for the development of Volleyball in Maffra
since its inception in 2014, coached Mikayla’s team, ably
assisted by Hannah Bennett, an ex-Maffra student.
Darren Marks and Jack McIntosh represented Victoria in
Under 15 Division one and Under 19 championship division
respectively. Both teams struggled to record wins over the
tournament, being competitive but not able to consistently
put three strong sets together.
Another ex-student, Meg McIntosh, coached the Under 15
Girls Division one team which has three local players, Kalarni
White, Gabbie Walshe and Captain Jasmin Underwood. This
team surprised onlookers with a strong showing in the
round robin matches, winning 6 of 10 matches. This set
them up for a playoff for Bronze against South Australia,
with the girls going down in a very tense 4 set match 25-11,
24-26, 25-23 and 27-25.

World's Greatest Shave I'm taking part in the World's Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia
Foundation. Blood cancer claims more lives than breast cancer or
melanoma. And today another 35 people will be given the
devastating news they have leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or
another blood disorder. My grandpa died of leukaemia, so I will be
supporting him and all the people who helped look after him.
This is the hair that I am
going to shave off for
leukaemia.
The shave is on the 16th
October at school.
My goal was to raise $500,
but the support has been
fantastic, and now I am well
on the way to raising
$1,000!
Please help me get there by hitting this link to sponsor me
http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/angusneaves
If you would rather do something with your spare change...please
drop it into the donation box at the front office at school.
Please sponsor me to give Aussie families facing blood cancer the
emotional and practical support they need.
Please click Angus Neaves and sponsor me today.
Thank you to all the generous supporters!
